Review Firefest 2005



Ich habe mich ziemlich kurzfristig dazu entschlossen, den langen Weg nach England auf mich zu nehmen, um das Firefest 2005 anzusehen und euch allen zu Berichten. Mit ein wenig Schwierigkeiten und einem langen Trip von London aus mit dem Zug nach Bradford, kam ich dann doch noch am Donnerstag kurz vor Mitternacht im Hotel an. Dann hieß es erstmal ausruhen…..



Pre-Fest-Show war am Freitag angesagt und folgte mit Auftritten von Dante Fox, Pride und House of Shakira. Lasst mich mal anfangen....



Dante Fox: Ich muss schon sagen, dass die Dame zwar eine wirkungsvolle Stimme hat, aber meiner Meinung nach live, leider nicht so gut rüber gekommen ist. Sie konnte zwar Ihre Fans mit ihren Songs mitreißen, dabei blieb aber ihre Performance recht langweilig, was eigentlich schade ist, da ich sie vor Jahren schon einmal gesehen hatte und sie mich damals live voll überzeugt haben. Der Sound war hier noch etwas wacklig.



Pride: Die neue Sensation in Sachen Melodikrock/AOR aus UK ging als zweite Band schon viel viel besser ran. Obwohl nur wenig Platz war, wie man es aus den meisten Kneipen her kennt, haben mir die Jungs eine tolle Freude mit Ihren Songs bereitet. Ein richtig guter Auftritt, durch einen aussagekräftigen Sänger wie Matt Mitchell inklusive neuem Zweit-Gitarristen Tony Marshall und ihrer Performance haben gezeigt, was Spaß am Spielen bedeuten kann. Bei Pride soll der Sound angeblich zu laut gewesen sein, was ich allerdings nicht bestätigen kann. Ich war direkt neben den Boxen gestanden und da war der Sound super.



House Of Shakira: Das Highlight, des Abends. Die schwedische Band, konnte voll durch ihren Auftritt überzeugen und war sozusagen als Headliner am richtigen Platz. Mit Ihren Songs, hauptsächlich aus dem „Lint“-Album brach die Menge, in volle Begeisterung aus und die band alleine heizte so richtig die Bude ein. Die gute Performance und zusätzlich sogar auch noch mit Original Sänger Mikael Eriksson sprechen für sich. Der Sound-Techniker hatte hier wieder alles im Griff.



Weil ich noch vom Vortag recht geschlaucht war und der Tatsache, dass Pride und House Of Shakira am Samstag noch mal spielten, ging ich ins Hotel zurück und versäumte somit den spontanen Akustik Auftritt von Firehouse Sänger CJ Snare, was mich im Nachhinein ziemlich geärgert hat, versteht sich!



Bereits um 12 Uhr vor verschlossenen Türen und einer lang wartenden Schlange am Samstag, stand uns die Vorfreude schon im Gesicht geschrieben.



Pride: Die erste Band, hat meistens was den Sound anbetrifft, eh immer die Arschlochkarte gezogen, was bei einer so hervorragenden Band wirklich schade ist. Ihren Auftritt haben sie jedoch vorzüglich mit schmachtenden Knüllern aus ihren zwei Alben wie „This Time“, „Saviour Of A Broken Heart“, „Who You Gonna Love“, „Could You Believe“, „Say You´re Not Lonely“ und einem neuen Song „Everybody´s Nightmare“ vollbracht. Einziger Nachteil, Tony Marshall passte mit seinem Outfit nicht gerade ganz ins Bild.



House Of Shakira: Hatten Ihre Schwierigkeiten mit dem Sound. Ob es nun am Mischer oder an der Band lag, wer weiß das schon so genau. Ihre Glanzleistung lag jedoch ganz klar am Freitag vorne, auch wenn die Songs recht gut gezogen waren.



Million: Konnten mich persönlich sehr gut überzeugen mit Ihrem Auftritt, der Vielfalt der Songauswahl und dem guten Sound. Ein Pluspunkt für den Mixer!!! Optisch, wie auch Akustisch, brachten sie unter anderem mit „Eyes Of A King“, „Backdoor Queen“, „Judgement Day“ und „Rock´n Roll Nation“ die Leute in die richtige Partylaune und das schon um 14.00 Uhr.



Legs Diamond: War richtig gehend Scheisse. Zu Alt, zu langweilig und als „Alte Hasen“ in diesem Geschäft, eigentlich eine Schande. Auch wenn Mitglieder wie John Levesque (Sänger) und Adam Kury (Bass) dahinter stehen, konnten sie mich trotzdem nicht vom Hocker reißen. Ich habe ein Best Of Album zu Hause und die einzigen Songs, die mir in Erinnerung blieben, waren „Fugitive“ und „Walk Away“. Was wollen sie damit beweisen, ohne Action – ohne Stil!



Casanova: Die erste Deutsche Band……Leider nicht im Original Line-Up, was recht schade war. Auch wenn Michael Voss eine sehr gute Stimme hat und sein Auftritt etwas verhindert, durch einen Gipsfuß, krönte er nicht gerade den Abend. Songs wie „Don´t Talk About Love“, „Burning Love“, „Ride The Wings Of Freedom“ und „The Doctor Is In“ fetzen nach wie vor gut. Doch trotz Gastauftritt mit Gary Barden (MSG) und dem gecoverten UFO Song „Doctor Doctor“ kein Lichtblick.



Dare: Noch langweiliger fand ich Dare, zu oft gesehen und gehört, haben mich auch nie so besonders interessiert, deshalb sind wir hier auch zum Essen gegangen. Bericht und Fotos entfallen somit.



Pink Cream 69: Rechtzeitig nach dem Essen zurück, ließ ich mir die Pinkies nicht entgehen. Nach wie vor für mich, die erfolgreichste Band aus Deutschland, obwohl Sänger David Readman ja aus der Nähe von Manchester/Wigan stammt und sie auch zum Ersten mal in England auftraten. Aufheizende Songs wie „Thunderdome“, „Hells Gone Crazy“, „Talk To The Moon“, „Welcome The Night“ machten die Menge zu Bestien und die gute Laune verflog auch nicht bei Songs wie „Lost In Illusion“, „Carnaby Road“ oder „That Was Yesterday“. Mit einer Mega-Erfahrung an Live-Auftritten, was viele Bands nicht aufweisen können, waren sie die ersten Abräumer, des Abends.



Firehouse: Nach vielen Jahren, des Wartens, endlich mal live zu sehen. Sie reißen nach wie vor ihre Fans mit ganzen Paletten von Anheizern wie „All She Wrote“, „Lover´s Lane“, „Shake ´n Tumble“, „Don´t Treat Me Bad“ von den Socken und lassen unter anderem, auch wie mich, bei „Look Into Your Eyes“ und „Love Of A Lifetime“ herzzerreißend weinen und mitsingen. Für sie war es kein Problem, die Stunde zu spielen und durch ihren sympathischen Auftritt hätten sie, die eigentlichen Headliner, sein müssen! Top Show.



TNT: TNT haben stark vorgelegt mit ihren alt bekannten Songs, die die Menge immer wieder mit sich reißt. Ich hab sie letztes Jahr auf dem Deep Impact in Deutschland gesehen und da lagen sie ganz vorne. Tony Harnells Stimme war wie eh und je supergut. Es ist zwar immer wieder eine Freude TNT mal wieder live zu sehen, aber mit der Zeit merkt man einfach wie die Band nachgelassen hat. Wieder recht schade, dass die Performance einfach ziemlich langweilig rüber kommt.



Soul Sirkus: Normalerweise ist man eine schnelle Umbaupause zwischen den Bands ja gewohnt, aber die Herren von SS ließen wirklich fast 1 ½ Stunden auf sich warten. Man hatte die drückende Stimmung so richtig gemerkt. Ein jeder war total genervt, dass es nicht endlich weiter geht, was auch kein Wunder nach 14Stunden Marathon und voller Musik-Power war. Als sie dann loslegten mit „Highest Ground“ war schon fast die Hälfte, der Leue gegangen. Keine Frage, hier sind Meister am Werk. Mit Jeff Scott Soto als Sänger sollte schon alles paletti gehen, packt man dazu noch Neal Schon als Gitarren-Guru und Marco Mendoza am Bass dazu, benötigt man nur noch den angegebenen Beat von Virgil Donati. Leider bekam man keine anderen Songs der Sparte Talisman, Whitesnake oder Journey zu hören, sondern rein das aktuelle Debut-Album von Soul Sirkus. Dass hatte zum Nachteil, dass die Leute mehr und mehr weggegangen sind, nach den überrauschenden Klängen von TNT und Firehouse. Was mir auch sehr gefehlt hat, war die gute Performance und überhaupt das gute Outfit. Sind die Leute, denn nur noch blind!!! Solche Bands präsentieren sich nur noch nach guter Musik, was mit der Zeit ziemlich ödend wirkt, da einfach keine Action passiert und ich würde nicht noch mal auf so ein Konzert gehen. Da geht es nicht nur mir als einzelne Person so, denke ich. Ein gutes Auftreten und Image gehören einfach zusammen! Ohne beides bist du ein Nichts!



Ganz am Schluss wurde noch eine handsignierte Gitarre verlost, was ich aber nicht mitbekommen habe, da wir auf dem Weg zur Aftershow Party waren.



Fazit vom Festival: Im Großen und Ganzen hat man für sein Geld wirklich qualitative Bands erhalten, was man bisher nicht gerade von ehemaligen UK-Festivals alla Z-Records oder The Gods sagen kann. Auf jeden Fall war es immer ein toller Treffpunkt für Melodikfreunde aus aller Welt wie Fans, Freunde, Journalisten, Labels und Musiker. Ob es das Geld Wert ist, muss eigentlich jeder selbst entscheiden, ich weiß nur, dass meine Organisation nächstes Mal besser ablaufen sollte.

I decide rather late, to go to England and see the Firefest 2005 to give a report about it. So, was it no wonder that i was finally happy, after small difficulties and a long trip from London with the train to Bradford, to arrived on Thursday shortly before midnight in the Hotel anyway. Then it was time to rest before the big events begin…..



The Pre-Fest-Show was announced on Friday and followed with appearances of Dante Fox, Pride and House of Shakira. Here we go….



Dante Fox: The Lady has an effective voice but unfortunately in my opinion it wasn't live a good performance. However, she could drag the fans along with their songs, her performance remained me quite boring, what harms actually since I had seen them years ago and there they have convinced themselves live very well. The sound was technical awful.



Pride: The Newcomer in the area of Melodicrock/AOR from UK went as a second band already much much better. Although it was only a little place who we all knows of most bars, the guys has brought me a terrific joy with their songs. By a meaningful singer like Mat Mitchell with a good appearance and a new second guitarist as Tony Marshall inclusive, they shown us with their performance what it really means to have fun in playing. I heared that some thought the sound was to loud, that i can definitively not confirm. I stand beside the boxes and there the sound was right.



House Of Shakira: The highlight of the evening. The Swedish band could convince themselves totally and was as the Headliner on the right place. With their songs mainly from the „Lint“-album broke the crowd in full enthusiasm out and they really put the hut on. The good performance and the original singer Mikael Eriksson in addition speak for themselves and says a lot. The sound here was much better.



Because i was still worn out properly of the day before and the fact that Pride and House of Shakira played also the next day again i went back to the hotel and therefore missed the spontaneous acoustic appearance of Firehouse singer CJ Snare what really annoyed me afterwards.



Already at 12 o´clock in front of locked doors and a huge line of waited people the anticipation was us written all over the face on Saturday.



Pride: The first band again and most of time always have the fanny punch card drawn when it comes to the sound what is really a pity with such an excellent band. With their great appearance of the songs „This Time“, „Saviour Of A Broken Heart“, „Who You Gonna Love“, „Could You Believe“, „Say You´re Not Lonely“ from their two albums and a new song „Everybody´s Nightmare“ they jutted out easily the 45 minutes. Only disadvantage, Tony Marshall didn't at all completely suit in the picture with his outfit „sorry“.



House Of Shakira: In the beginning they had difficulties with the Sound. If it was the fault of the mixer or due to the band who knows this so exactly. They make their best of it and yes their brilliant achievement lays clearly on Friday even if the songs had moved quite well.



Million: Could convince me very well with their appearance, the variety of the song choice and a good sound what´s really easy with such great songs. Advantage for the blender !!! Visually as also acousticly they brought for one among other things with „Eyes of A King“, „Backdoor Queen“, „Judgement Day“ and „Rock´n Roll Nation“ the people in the right party mood and this already at 14.00 o´clock.



Legs Diamond: Just one word „holy Shit“. Too old, too boring and as „Old rockers“ in this business, real a disgrace. Even if members like John Levesque (singer) and Adam Kury (bass) stand behind this, they couldn't nevertheless tear me of the stool. I have a Best of album at home and the only songs which i remember were „Fugitive“ and „Walk Away“. What do they want to prove with that, without action - without style!



Casanova: The first german band…..unfortunately not in the original line Up which is very sad. Even if Michael Voss has a very good voice and his appearance prevents something by a plaster foot, he crowned not really the evening. Songs like “Don´t Talk About Love”, “Burning Love”, “Ride The Wings Of Freedom” and “The Doctor Is In” still tear well. Despite guest appearance with Gary Barden (MSG) and the cover song from UFO „Doctor Doctor“ no ray of hope.



Dare: Even more boring I found Dare. I´ve seen him too often and so interested was he not for me therefore I go for a meal. Report and photos are therefore dropped.



Pink Cream 69: Back in time, I didn't miss the Pinkies. For me still the most successful band from Germany even if singer David Readman comes from the proximity of Manchester/Wigan, but the first show in England. Burner like „Thunderdome“, „Hells Gone Crazy“, „Talk To The Moon“, „Welcome The Night“, made the crowd brutes and the good mood didn´t vanished either on songs like „Lost In Illusion“, „Carnaby Road“ or That Was Yesterday“. With a mega-experience live appearances what many bands cannot show were they the first Highlight of this evening.



Firehouse: Seeing finally live after many years of waiting. They still tear their fans with the whole pallets of songs like “All She Wrote”, “Lover´s Lane”, “Shake ´n Tumble”, “Don´t Treat Me Bad” with and among other things let us also cry and sing with to sons like “Look Into Your Eyes” and “Love Of A Lifetime”. No Problem for them to play one hour and through their pleasant appearance should be the real Headliner on that day! Top show!



TNT: TNT always could have the attention from the crowd with their damn good songs. I have seen them on the Deep Impact last year in germany and they lay there quite in front. Tony Harnells voice was as always in form. It´s always great to see them again but after a time you noctice simply that the bound has fallen off. Quite a pity that the performance simply comes rather boringly over here again.



Soul Sirkus: Normaly you are used to a short break between the Bands but SS really let us wait 90minutes, what is really a horror. No wonder that a lot were pissed off and also just go away after a 14hours marathon day and full music power actually. When they finally begun with „Highest Ground“ were already half of the people gone. No question here are masters at work. With Jeff Scott Soto on vocals should go all from hand, put Neal Schon the guitar guru and Marco Mendoza on Bass to it, you will just need for your beat Virgil Donati. Unfortunately, we didn't get to listen any other songs of Talisman, Whitesnake or Journey, just the boring Debut album of Soul Sirkus. That had to the disadvantage that people more and more have gone away after the about roaring sounds from TNT and Firehouse. I also missed very much again a good performance and at all the good outfit. Are people so blind!!! Such bands only present themselves after good music, what quite works dreariness after a time with no action and I wouldn't go to such a concert once again. I can´t be the only one who think so. A good appearance and image simply belong together! Without having both, you are Nothing!!!



In the end a signed guitar was drawn lots but I don´t see it because we were on the way to the aftershow party.



Fazit of the Festival:

You really get something for your money what you never could say of earlier shows in UK like Z-Records or The Gods. In any case it was always a terrific meeting place for melodicrock friends from all the world like fans, friends, journalists, labels and musicians. That´s why i always do that.
