Van Halen - 1984

„1984“ ist mit seinen neun Stücken (eigentlich nur acht, wenn man das Intro rausrechnet) und einer Spielzeit von etwas mehr als einer halben Stunde ein ziemlich kurzes Album. Da muss wenigstens die Qualität der Songs stimmen; und die haut einen hier echt aus den Socken! Es finden sich hier einige gute Songs und sogar gleich drei Klassiker der Bandgeschichte.

Zunächst muss man allerdings das erste Lied in Form eines etwa einminütigen Intros über sich ergehen lassen. Dann folgt aber mit Stück zwei „Jump“ das bei weitem bekannteste Lied der Bandgeschichte, mit einem Sound, bei dem man sich fragt ob das jetzt noch Rock- oder schon Popmusik ist. Auf jeden Fall ist das Lied saugeil und war zurecht auf der ganzen Welt ein Hit. Das man „Jump“ auch heute noch regelmässig überall hört, beweist die Zeitlosigkeit dieses Klassikers. Song Numero drei „Panama“ steht „Jump“ in nichts nach und lässt die harten Gitarren mal wieder so richtig rocken. Das nächste Lied „Top Jimmy“ fällt zwar etwas ab, ist aber immer noch sehr gut. Besonders die Fans von Eddie Van Halens Gitarre kommen hier auf ihre Kosten. Mit Stück sechs „Hot for a teacher“ ist dann noch ein weiteres Highlight der Bandgeschichte mit an Bord. Auch das Video dazu macht immer wieder Spass!

Der Rest des Albums fällt dann etwas ab, was aber nicht weiter schlimm ist, da „1984“ auch so mit zum besten zählt, was Van Halen im Laufe ihrer langen Karriere zustande gebracht haben. Es war ja sozusagen das Abschiedsalbum für David Lee Roth, der danach aus der Band ausgestiegen ist. Mit „1984“ hat er sich aber auf jeden Fall würdig verabschiedet.

„1984“ is, with its nine Songs (actually eight if you don’t count the intro) and a running time of a little more than 30 minutes a rather short album. At least the quality of the songs has to be good, then; and it is really outstanding here. The album contains some good songs and even three all-time classics of the band’s history.

But at first you have to listen to the one-minute-intro. But then comes with song number two “Jump” the most famous Song of Van Halen, with a sound which makes you ask yourself if this is still rock or already pop music. But nevertheless it’s absolutely great music and was a hit around the globe. This timeless Song is still being played everywhere very often. Song number three “Panama” can hold the level of “Jump” and features some hard rocking guitars. The next song “Top Jimmy” is not as good as the previous two but still rocks. Especially the fans of Eddie Van Halen’s guitar will like it. With the sixth song “Hot for a teacher” follows one more alltime highlight of the band. The video is always very funny to watch, too.

The rest of the album is again on a little lower level than the other songs, but that doesn’t really matter, because “1984” is already one of the best pieces of music the band has ever made. It was kind of a goodbye album for David Lee Roth because he left the band afterwards. But as a matter of fact his farewell was quite honourable and nobody will regret the purchase of “1984”.
