Triumph - Sport of the Kings

Wie ich letztens festgestellt habe, hat ja jeder Sleazemetal.com- Redakteur schon ein Album von Triumph reviewt; und da will ich natürlich nicht die einzige Ausnahme bleiben. Besonders, da Triumph einige gute Platten hatten und trotzdem nie wirklich den Durchbruch geschafft hatten. Das lag wohl daran, dass sie, wie gesagt, zwar regelmässig einige ordentliche Songs hatten, der wirkliche Hit, mit dem sie große Aufmerksamkeit hätten erregen können, blieb ihnen aber bis heute versagt. Obwohl es ihn auf „The sport of kings“ hätte geben können.

Die Band, die in der ersten Hälfte der Achtziger eher erdigen Hardrock gespielt hatte, wollte sich nun im AOR Bereich versuchen und legte ein recht ordentliches Album vor, beim dem wie bisher einige Songs ganz gut waren, aber nicht wirklich im Gedächtnis hängen blieben. Bis auf eine Ausnahme, die es hier aber wirklich in sich hat. Lied Nummer zwei „Somebody’s out there“ ist der herausragende Song, der für mich der beste der ganzen Bandkarriere ist. Super Text und Melodie, die richtig Laune machen und einen wochenlang in ihren Bann ziehen. Der Rest kann auf dem Niveau nicht mithalten; hörenswert ist er aber trotzdem auf jeden Fall. So sind die Songs Nummer eins „Tears in the rain“ und die Nummer vier „If only“ noch recht gute Midtempo Nummern und die Nummer sieben „Just one night“ ist eine richtig gute Ballade.

Alles in allem kann man „The Sport of Kings“ als ein typisches Mittachtziger Melodic Rock Album bezeichnen, dass man nicht nur wegen dem Übersong „Somebody’s out there“ in seiner Sammlung haben muss

Recently I recognized that every staff member of sleazemetal.com has already reviewed an album of Triumph; of course I don’t wanna remain he only exception. Especially because Triumph had some good records but never managed to hit it big. The reason for this might be that they had many quite good songs but never a real chartbreaker that could have attracted a huge audience. Although “The sport of kings” offered the potential for it.

The band, that had used to play ordinary hardrock during the first half of the eighties, now wanted to try itself in the AOR sector and released a quite good record. As before it contained some tracks that were convincing, but didn’t really remain in one’s head for a long time. But this time there was an exception and this exception was a big one. Song number two “Somebody’s out there” is the outstanding hit that should have made it big. For me it’s the best song of the whole band career. Fantastic songtext and melody bring you in a good mood and make you hear it over and over for weeks. The rest cannot keep up with this level, but is still listenable. For example songs number one “Tears in the rain” and number four “If only” are quite good midtempo tracks and number seven “Just one night” is a very good ballad.

In total “The Sport of Kings” is a typical mid eighties melodic rock record, that has to be in everyone’s collection not only because “Somebody’s out there”.
