Ten - The Essential Collection 1995-2005

Pünktlich zu ihrem zehnjährigen Jubiläum beglückt uns die Band Ten mit einem Greatest Hits Doppelalbum. Die fünf Engländer um Sänger Gary Hughes, die ihre größten Erfolge bisher in Japan feierten, hatten dabei die sehr innovative Idee die Rocklieder auf die eine Scheibe und die Balladen auf die andere Scheibe zu packen, was sicher vielen gefallen wird.

Ich persönlich hatte von Ten bisher noch nichts gehört. Die Musik, die sie spielen, lässt sich wohl am ehesten als klassischer Hardrock mit modernen Einflüssen beschreiben. Die Lieder nehmen dabei teils epische Ausmaße an. Die Laufzeiten liegen zwischen sechs und acht Minuten, was dann auch erklärt, warum es bei einer Gesamtspielzeit von über zwei Stunden „nur“ 18 Songs gibt.

Die Rocklieder der ersten Disc sind fast ausnahmslos im Midtempo Bereich und weisen eine gesunde Härte auf; lediglich die Nummer vier „Apparition“ ist ein bisschen flotter. Und besonders Freunde langer Intros kommen voll auf ihre Kosten.

Die Balladen überzeugen besonders durch ihre Texte und die stimmigen, ruhigen Melodien.

Als Fazit kann ich sagen, das Ten musikalisch sicher einiges auf dem Kasten haben. Der Sound ist für 70er und 80er Puristen allerdings zunächst etwas gewöhnungsbedürftig. Fans der Band werden ihre Alben eh zu Hause haben. Für alle anderen Interessenten könnte diese Greatest Hits Collection ein sehr guter Einstieg sein; man sollte aber vor dem Kauf vielleicht mal kurz reinhören.

Right at the time of their 10th anniversary the band Ten publishes a greatest hits double album. The five Brits around singer Gary Hughes, who have had their biggest success in Japan up to now, had the very unique idea to put the rocking tracks on the one disc and the ballads on the other disc, which will probably be enjoyed by many.

Until today I haven’t heard anything about Ten. The music they play can be described as classic Hardrock with modern influences. The songs are mostly of epical length. The running times are between six and eight minutes each song, what explains why there are “only” 18 songs on a total of more than two hours.

The rocking tracks on the first disc often have midtempo speed and are quite heavy for hardrock. Only the number four “Apparition” is a little faster. And especially friends of large Intros will have a good time.

The ballads convince with their songtexts and quiet melodies.

For conclusion I have to say that the musicial abilities of the band are really good. But pure 70ies and 80ies lovers might have to get used to it at first. Fans of the band have their records at home anyway. For other people who might be interested this greatest hits collection could be perfect to get to know the group; but before buying one should check it out first.
