Stan Bush &Barrage - Same

Für das Review zu dieser Scheibe muss ich etwas weiter ausholen, denn ich bin auf sehr ungewöhnliche Weise zu ihr gekommen. Irgendwann Ende der 90er kaufte ich mir mal die Reunion Scheibe „Heaven“ von Stan Bush & Barrage (die übrigens auch sehr gut ist und jedem empfohlen werden kann). Der Verkäufer erwähnte beiläufig, dass das Debut von den Jungs eine wirklich geniale Sache sei, aber heutzutage schwer zu kriegen. Ich hab von da an immer die Augen offen gehalten, doch der Verkäufer hatte bei allem was er sagte recht. Und mir ist die Scheibe nur einmal auf Ebay unter die Augen gekommen, wo sie für 130,-DM wegging. Da das natürlich eine unerschwingliche Preislage ist, entschloss ich mich nun dazu das Ding auf LP anzuschaffen, was für wenige Euro möglich ist.

Und als ich sie dann endlich hörte konnte ich meinen Ohren nicht trauen. „Stan Bush & Barrage“ ist die erste AOR Scheibe, die es mit meinem bisherigen Favoriten „Escape“ von Journey aufnehmen kann. Viele rockige Lieder, die mit ausgewogenem Keyboardeinsatz auf bombastisch getrimmt wurden und 1A Melodien am Start haben.

Los geht das ganze mit zwei ruhigeren Stücken, die im Midtempo Bereich angesiedelt sind und dieses Melodic Meisterwerk angemessen eröffnen. Bei der Nummer drei „Primitive Lover“ wird die Geschwindigkeit dann erstmals angezogen und der goodtime rock nimmt seinen Lauf. Die Nummer vier „Heart vs. head“ geht wieder zurück in den Midtempo Bereich und ist mit wirklich interessantem Text und genialer Melodie ein absoluter Ohrwurm. Sofort danach geht’s mit „Crank that radio“ wieder in schnelleren Rock über, der einfach turbogeil ist und mich bereits jetzt absolut überzeugt hat.

Auf Seite zwei geht es genau so weiter, wie es auf der ersten aufgehört hat; der bombastische Refrain von „Gates of paradise“ ist alles andere als ein typischer B-Seiten Hit. Das herausragende Highlight der Scheibe ist aber unbestritten die Nummer neun „The Touch“ Damals der Titelsong zum Spielfilm der Zeichentrickserie „Transformers“, die ich mir als Kind regelmäßig reingezogen habe. Mir fallen hier wirklich keine angemessenen Worte ein um dieses Lied zu beschreiben; für mich persönlich ist es das beste, was der Melodik Rock je zu Stande gebracht hat. Wer das einmal gehört hat, kommt nie wieder davon los. Ich habe es seit Jahren auf einer Compilation und höre es regelmäßig. Zum Abschluss gibt es mit „What is love“ noch mal eine Ballade, die ebenfalls auf einem unglaublich hohen Niveau ist und die Höchstwertung, die „Stan Bush & Barrage“ mehr als verdient, noch einmal unterstreicht.

Eigentlich könnte ich zu diesem Album noch seitenweise Weiterschreiben, deshalb nur noch kurz einige Worte zum Schluss. Lasst euch nicht davon irritieren, dass die Scheibe total unbekannt ist. Das liegt hauptsächlich daran, dass das Scotti Bros Label schon lange nicht mehr existiert und man deswegen kaum eine Möglichkeit hat sie zu erwerben. Zwar sind einige der Solo Sachen von Stan Bush absolut nicht das Gelbe vom Ei doch mit seiner Band Barrage läuft er wirklich zur Höchstform auf. Und im Hinblick auf die maßlosen Ebay Preise kann man nur hoffen, dass sie irgendwann mal wiederveröffentlicht wird, oder man begnügt sich mit der LP. Ich jedenfalls kann nur jedem AOR Fan empfehlen, sich so schnell wie möglich auf die Suche zu machen.

I need to tell a little story before I begin the review of this record, because the way I got was a little bit strange. Some day at the end of the nineties I bought the reunion record “Heaven” of Stan Bush & Barrage (which is very good, too by the way and can be recommended to everybody). The salesman mentioned that the debut of these guys is a work of genius but very hard to get these days. From there on I kept my eyes but he was right with everything he said. I only saw this record once on Ebay where it was sold for an enormous amount of money and therefore I decided to buy it on vinyl which is possible for only a few bucks.

And when I was finally listening to it I couldn’t trust my ears. “Stan Bush & Barrage” is the first AOR record, that can compete with my former favourite “Escape” by Journey. Many rocking tracks, which are quite bombastic because of the balanced use of keyboards and offer A+ melodies.

The party starts with two more quiet songs from the midtempo section which are absolutely adequate to open up for this masterpiece of melodic rock. With the number three “Primitive Lover” the speed is going up for the first time and the goodtime rock is beginning to take its course. Track number four “Heart vs. head” is going back to the midtempo section and is with its interesting text and superb melody very earcatching. Right after that it returns to faster rock with “Crank that radio”, which is absolutely great and has convinced me already.

On side two it continues just as it stopped on the first one; the great keyboards of the chorus of “Gates of paradise” are everything but a typical B-side hit. But the outstanding highlight of this record is without any doubt song number nine “The touch”. Back in the eighties this song was part of the movie of the cartoon “Transformers” which I was watching regularly as a child. I really don’t know the appropriate words to describe this song; for me it is the best melodic rock has ever seen. The one who has listened to it once will never get away from it again. I’ve had it for years on a compilation and I’m still listening to it regularly. The final track is “What is love” another ballad, which is also on an incredible high level and one more time underlines the highest rating of “Stan Bush & Barrage” which the record more than deserves.

Actually I could go on for pages with writing about this record, so I’ll just say a few more words to conclude. Don’t let the fact that the record is virtually unknown irritate you. The main reason for this might be that the Scotti Bros Label hasn’t been existing for quiet a long time now and therefore there is hardly any possibility to buy it. And as a matter of fact some of the solo works of Stan Bush are not really good, but with his band Barrage he is really doing well. Concerning the high prices one has to pay on Ebay we have to hope that the album will be re released one day, or you stick to the LP. I can only recommend to every AOR fan to begin looking for it as soon as possible.
