Spellbound (SWE) - Rockin´n Restless

Auf Spellbound, bin ich eigentlich, durch meinen schwedischen Freund gestoßen. Wie ihr jetzt auch sicherlich vermutet stammt Spellbound auch aus Schweden. Sie haben zwei exzellente Alben „Breaking The Spell“ 1984 und „Rockin´Reckless“ 1985 herausgebracht. Die Band nahm auch anderes Material auf, dass nie herausgebracht wurde bis heute, unter Megarock Records (Schweden), wie das Album „Hidden Treasures“ für den japanischen Markt. Wie dem auch sei, all das war lange her! Im Mai 1983 trafen sich Thomas Thompson (Bass) und Hans Fröberg (vocals) in Boden, der nördlichsten Stadt Schwedens. Sie entschlossen sich eine band zu gründen und fanden Alf Strandberg und seinen Bruder Ola. Im Dezember 1983 kam Gitarrist Jocke „JJ“ March dazu. Spellbound haben tatsächlich bei Sonet unterschrieben, nachdem sie eine Band-Competition gewonnen hatten, wo der erste Preis ein Record-Deal war. Die Jungs hatten somit echt Glück! Schon allleine das Cover ist recht ansprechend. Da schauen Frauen, die auf langhaarige Männer stehen sofort drauf. Aufgenommen wurde das zweite Album „Rockin´Reckless“ im Riverside Studio in London. Produzent Vic Maile (Girlschool, Tygers of Pan Tang) flog nach Schweden und verbrachte einige Zeit mit der Band, arbeitete am Material und half ihnen mit den Arrangements, bevor er sie nach England holte, damit auch die Aufnahmen in drei Wochen funktionierten. Der Musikstil, den Spellbound spielen ist klassischer 70iger/80iger Hardrock. Musikalisch und Songweise haben sie Einflüsse von Top Bands wie Saxon, UFO oder auch MSG. Das sieht man ganz deutlich auch bei ihrem gleichnamigen Opener „Rockin´Reckless“. Einfach ein mitreißender Song mit einem tollen Gitarrensolo. „Love On The Run“ ist ein spritziger Song. Zum Teil ein stampfender Takt mit Höhen und Tiefen. „Shot Of Love“ ist eine Ballade, die auf einem Album eigentlich auch nicht fehlen darf, sogar mit einem Hauch von zarten Raggee-Klängen und einem Saxophonesolo. „Streetprowler“ kommt mit Keyboardeinlagen und zum Teil meint man Saxon herauszuhören. „Dying For Your Touch“ könnte auch Saxon geschrieben haben. Der Abschluss macht „Sing You Goodbye“. Ein typischer Song mit Klavier-/Keyboard parts und einem eintönigen Refrain. Obwohl sie grossartige Reviews erhielten, an irgendeiner kranken Drehung des Schicksals, kamen sie aber nie zu größerem Erfolg.

I find Spellbound through my swedish boyfriend. How you right now suspect are Spellbound from Sweden. They released two excellent albums "Breaking The Spell" in 1984 and "Rockin’ Reckless" in 1985. The band also recorded material that wasn't released until today on Megarock Records, Sweden as well as the album "Hidden Treasures" for the Japanese market. Like this also is, all that was long ago! In May 1983 met Thomas Thompson (bass) and Hasse Fröberg (vocals) in Boden, the northern city of sweden. They decided to form a band and found Alf Strandberg and his brother Ola. In December 1983 guitarist Jocke "JJ" Marsh was added to the line-up. Spellbound was actually signed by Sonet after having won a band-competition where a record-deal was first price. The guys were really lucky! The cover alone is quite attractive. Women look immediately there if they´d like long-haired men. The second album „Rockin´Restless“ was recorded in Riverside Studios, London. Producer Vic Maile (Girlschool, Tygers Of Pan Tang) went to Sweden to spend some time with the band, work on material and help out with the arrangements, before bringing the band over for three weeks to work in the recording-den. The style which Spellbound plays is classic 70’s/80’s hardrock. Musically and songwise they are influenced by top bands like Saxon, UFO or even MSG. That you see quite clear on the opener song „Rockin´Reckless“. Simple an infectious song with a terrific guitar solo. „Love On The Run“ is a tangier song. Stamping time with heights and depths. „Shot Of Love“ is a ballad, which may not be missing actually on an album either, is even with a breath of soft Raggee sounds and a saxophonesolo. „Streetprowler“ comes with keyboard deposits and partly seems to out listened Saxon. „Dying For Your Touch“ also could have written Saxon. The End makes „Sing You Goodbye“. A typical song with piano-/Keyboard parts and a monotonous Refrain.Despite the great reviews the band, by some sick twist of fate, never received any greater success.
