Shameless - Backstreet Anthems

“No Grunge, no Alternative – This is Kick-Ass Rock ‘n Roll” heisst es auf dem Cover. Und dem kann ich voll und ganz zustimmen. Auch wenn das Album 1999 herauskam handelt es sich um Glam in Reinkultur, so dass sich die Scheibe anhört, als wäre sie eigentlich 10 Jahre früher erschienen. Bassist Alexx Michael vereinte einige namhafte Glamveteranen der 80er um sich und begann das Projekt Shameless, dass mittlerweile auf drei Studioalben und ein Livealbum kommt. Los ging es mit dem hier vorliegenden Backstreet Anthems, mit dem die Band das Genre sicher nicht neu erfindet, aber in bewährter Manie abrockt. Die persönliche Note verleihen den Songs Steve Summers und Stevie Rachelle. Und während Steve Summers mit seiner Stammband Pretty Boy Floyd heutzutage quasi im Monatstakt ein Album nach dem anderen auf den Markt schmeisst, deren Qualität songtechnisch und produktionstechnisch teils absolut grottig sind, hat er mit Shameless bisher drei Volltreffer gelandet.

Lieder wie „Backseat Action“, „Just one nite“ und „All the girls but you“ rocken super ab und machen ordentlich Laune. Das ist 80er Rock wie man ihn kennt und liebt. Die Highlights des Albums sind für mich „Strange Dayz“ und „What’s goin on“, die neben 1a Melodien sogar schon etwas Individualität mitbringen. Auf einem Glamalbum dürfen natürlich auch Balladen nicht fehlen, jedoch sind „You’re the one I want“ und „Realize“ hier doch eher als (lästige?) Pflichtübung zu betrachten.

Insgesamt kann ich noch sagen, dass Backstreet Anthems mich besonders härtemässig ein bisschen an das Debut von Poison erinnert. Auch das Cover ist ähnlich bunt geraten. Und auch wenn die beiden nachfolgenden Alben „Splashed“ und „Queen for a day“ musikalisch noch ein bisschen mehr zu bieten haben, dürfte jeder Anhänger des Poserrock hier mehr als zufrieden sein und sich auf die schwierige Suche begeben, da die Scheibe mittlerweile ziemlich schwer aufzutreiben ist.

“No Grunge, no Alternative – This is Kick-Ass Rock ‘n Roll”. That’s what it says on the Cover. And I totally agree on this statement. Even when the album came out in 1999 it is pure glam, so that the record sounds as if it would have been published ten years earlier. Base player Alexx Michael gathered some well known veterans of 80ies glamrock and began the project Shameless, that meanwhile brought out three studio records and one live. It started with the here discussed Backstreet Anthems on which the band does not really reinvent the genre, but lets it rock just like old times. The Songs get their personal touch by singers Steve Summers und Stevie Rachelle. And while Steve Summers with his original band Pretty Boy Floyd publishes one album after another these days with a quality in songs and production which is often not worth talking about, he had three hit albums with Shameless.

Tracks like „Backseat Action“, „Just one nite“ and „All the girls but you“ are awesome rock that brings you in a good mood. That’s 80ies rock as you know and love it. For me the highlights of the record are “Strange dayz” und “What’s goin on” which have next to nice melodies also some individuality. And what would a glamrecord be without some ballads; but in this case “You’re the one I want” an “Realize” sound like songs that had to be done.

In conclusion I can say that Backstreet Anthems reminds me especially in terms of sound to the debut of Poison. The Cover is equally colourful, too. And even when the two following records “Splashed” and “Queen for a day” are a little better, every Fan of Poserrock can be satisfied and begin the long search, because the album is quite hard to get these days.
