Guns n' Roses - Appetite für destruction

Einigen ganz treuen Sleaze-Metal.com Usern wird es vielleicht schon aufgefallen sein, dass wir in letzter Zeit einige (wenige) Reviews von ausgewählten Alben neu geschrieben haben. Das liegt daran, dass in der Anfangsphase der Website noch einige Mitarbeiterwechsel vorgefallen sind und in der allgemeinen Hektik einige hochklassige Alben nicht das ausführliche Review bekommen haben, dass sie eigentlich verdienen.

Dazu zählt ohne Zweifel auch das Debut der Band, die als die Erfinder des Sleazerock gelten und in den folgenden Jahren wohl mindestens jede zweite Band mit ihrem Sound beeinflusst haben. Die Rede ist natürlich von Guns n Roses und Appetite for destruction. Es gibt ja viele Bands, die einen absoluten Superhit haben, mit dem sie ständig in Verbindung gebracht werden, z.B. Led Zeppelin mit „Stairway to heaven“ oder Deep Purple mit „Smoke on the water“. Guns n Roses haben es hier aber geschafft mit „Welcome to the jungle“, „Paradise city“ und „Sweet child of mine“ gleich drei solcher alltime classics auf ein Album zu bringen. Auch der Rest des Albums ist derart überzeugend, das Afd von verschiedenen Branchenkennern zum wichtigsten Album von 1987 gewählt wurde und immer noch in fast jeder Liste der besten Alben der Musikgeschichte vertreten ist.

Die zwölf Songs bieten alles was sleaze haben muss und dass in Perfektion. Die Texte sind super originell, dreckig, lassen eine nie da gewesene Rotzigkeit raushängen, kommen mit einer ordentlichen Portion Wut daher und haben aber trotzdem noch einzigartige Melodien und hören sich niemals frustriert an, wie der Grunge Mist, der später kam. Neben der kreischenden Stimme von Axl Rose sind auch noch die häufigen Tempowechsel innerhalb eines Liedes Merkmal der Band.

Los geht das ganze mit dem eben schon angesprochenen „Welcome to the jungle“, das nicht nur bei den MTV Awards abgeräumt hat, sondern auch das einzige Video gekriegt hat, in dem Axl noch eine Fönfrisur hat. Weiter folgen Kracher wie Mr. Brownstone und Nighttrain, bis zum nächsten Highlight „Paradise City“, zu dem ich wohl keine Worte mehr verlieren muss. Mir persönlich gefallen auch besonders die nächsten beiden Songs. „My Michelle“ hat einen derart krassen Text, wenn die deutschen Jugendschützer Englisch könnten, wäre Afd wohl nie frei verkäuflich gewesen. „Think about you“ ist noch mal ein flotter Rocker, der immer wieder gut abgeht. Als nächstes kommt mit Highlight Nummer drei „Sweet child of mine“ eine der besten Balladen, die es je gegeben hat und auch die letzten drei Songs wären, als Single ausgekoppelt, sicher Chartstürmer geworden.

Zum Schluss bleibt mir dann nur noch zu sagen, das es auf diesem Album wirklich nur Hits gibt; ich weiß nicht wie viele Millionen mal es mittlerweile verkauft worden ist. Auch der Coverskandal, den es anfangs gab, muss hier erwähnt werden, denn die LP mit Originalcover, das kurz nach Verkaufsstart verboten wurde, ist heutzutage schon ein hübsches Sümmchen wert. Bei Guns n Roses wurden mit dem Erfolg auch die Probleme größer und die Skandale fingen langsam aber sicher an, die Musik in den Hintergrund zu drängen. Eines ist aber sicher: Mit „Appetite for destruction“ haben sie ein Meisterwerk mit zeitlosem Sound erschaffen, in einer Zeit, wo das eigentlich gar nicht möglich war; und dass wird auch in hundert Jahren noch seine Fangemeinde haben.

The band that is said to be the inventors of sleazerock has probably influenced every second band in the following years with their sound. This band is of course Guns n Roses with Appetite for destruction. There are many bands which have the one superhit they are always related to, for example Led Zeppelin and “Stairway to heaven” or Deep Purple and “Smoke on the water”. But Guns n Roses have achieved to make a record which with „Welcome to the jungle“, „Paradise city“ and „Sweet child of mine“ features three of those alltime classics. The rest as well is so convincing that Afd was chosen to be the most important record of 1987 by may institutions and is still named as one of the best albums of alltime very often.

The twelve songs offer everything sleaze has got to have, in incredible perfection. The songtexts are absolutely original, dirty, show a never seen before attitude, come with a great portion of anger but still have fantastic melodies and never sound depressive like grunge which came later. Next to the screaming voice of Axl Rose the many changes of speed within the songs is characteristic for the band.

The party starts with the aforementioned “Welcome to the jungle”, which was not only at the MTV Awards a winner and has received the only video in which Axl has got big hair. Following come hits like “Mr. Brownstone” and “Nightrain” until the next highlight “Paradise city”, a song I surely won’t have to say anymore about. Personally I especially like the next two songs. “My Michelle” has such an offensive songtext if the German agency for teenage protection could speak English it would probably have received an R rating. “Think about you” is once again a fast song, which rocks really great every time again. Next comes the third highlight with “Sweet child o’ mine” one of the best ballads tat has ever been made. The last three songs would have been chrthits, too if they had been published as singles.

For conclusion all I can say is that this album really contains only hits and I don’t know how many million times it has been sold until now. The scandal because of the cover, that occurred in the beginning has to be mentioned here, too. The LP with the original cover, which had been banned shortly after the day of the publishing, is worth quite a few bucks today. For Guns n Roses with the success the problems grew and the scandals started to push the music more and more into the background.

But one thing is for sure: With Appetite for destruction the band created a masterpiece that features timeless sound in a time this was actually impossible, which will still have its fans in a hundred years.
