Evil Masquerade - Third Act

Die Dänen um Bandchef Henrik Flyman sind mit Evil Masquerade und ihrem dritten Album „Third Act“ zurück. Hier wollten sie gleich sicher gehen und schrieben doch tatsächlich Stücke für zwei komplette Alben, wovon aber nur die Hälfte der Songs erscheinen, um einen gewissen Qualitätsstandard zu sichern. Wechsel im Line Up schienen ebenfalls unabwendbar. Den Bass bedient nun Thor Jeppesen. Auch Apollo Papathanasio (Ex-Majestic, Ex-Time Requiem, Ex-Firewind) ist mit von der Partie. Ganz in der Tradition der ersten beiden Evil Masquerade-Alben, wurde wieder Keyboarder als Gastmusiker eingeladen. (Obwohl ich hier anmerken muss, dass ich die beiden vorherigen Alben nicht kenne!) Wie auch schon auf diesen Alben ist auf „Third Act“ wieder Richard Andersson zu hören. Neu dabei ist Tasten Legende David Rosenthal (Rainbow, Malmsteen, Vai, Whitesnake, Dream Theater etc…), dessen Hinzunahme für noch mehr Brillanz sorgte. Henrik Flyman war für die Gitarrenparts und die Produktion zuständig. Sein Spiel passt sich perfekt wie ein Handschuh an den Sound an und wirkt nie überzogen. Wir bekommen harte Riffs, explosive Lead-Gitarren, schöne Melodien, akustische Gitarren und sogar einige Slidesounds. Die Produktion ist hart und passt ebenfalls zur Musik. Der Mix und das Mastering gehen auf das Konto von Tommy Hansen (Helloween, TNT, Jorn). Für mich scheint „Third Act“ ein typisches Powermetallalbum zu sein. Gleich die ersten Songs lassen darauf schließen. Powergeladene, schnell wechselnde Rhythmen und Gitarren alla Dream Theater und Malmsteen Hysterie, nur einen Touch melodischer. Alle Songs sind im gleichen Schema gehalten, mal wird’s härter und schneller, mal wieder langsamer und langgezogener. Der Gesang gleicht sich dem Rhythmus an und das ewige Gitarrengedussel, geht auch mir manchmal ziemlich auf die Nerven, obwohl ich wirklich gerne mal die Gitarren klirren höre. Irgendwie erinnert mich die Gesangsweise von Apollo an Fates Warning, nur etwas sanfter. Stampfende Songs fehlen hier auch nicht. Ein Instrumentalsong mit Orchester ist auch dabei und der letzte Song dieser Scheibe ist der Ruhigste von allen, so eine Art Hymne, wie ich das sehe. Im Ganzen ist das Album schon stark, aber nichts weltbewegend Neues. Wer auf die genannten Bands steht, kann hier sicher nichts falsch machen. Muss man aber nicht unbedingt haben. Anspieltipps: Third Act, Black Raves Cry, Descended From the Grave, Far Away, I´ll Make You Burn, Under the Surface of Water und Bring On the world.

The Danes around bandchef Henrik Flyman are back with Evil Masquerade and their third album „Third Act“. Here they wanted to go directly surely and actually wrote songs for two complete albums, but just only half of the Songs appear, in order to secure a certain quality standard. Changes in the LINE UP seemed likewise inevitable. Now Thor Jeppesen serves the bass. Also Apollo Papathanasio (Ex-Majestic, Ex-Time Requiem, Ex-Firewind) is on board. Completely in the tradition of the first two Evil Masquerade albums, again Keyboarder was invited as a guest musician. (Although I must mark here that I do not know the two previous albums!) As on the other albums before is Richard Andersson heard again on „Third Act“ , too. Newcomer is Keys legend David Rosenthal (Rainbow, Malmsteen, Vai, Whitesnake, Dream Theater etc…), his inclusion is still for more brilliance ensured. Henrik Flyman was responsible for the guitar parts and production. His playing adapts perfectly like a glove to the sound and works never covered. We even get hard reef, explosive Lead guitars, beautiful melodies, acoustic guitars and some Slidesounds. The Production is hard and fits likewise to the music. For the mix and mastering is Tommy Hansen (Helloween, TNT, Jorn) responsible. For me "Third act" seems to be a typical power metal album. Already the first Songs suggests. Power-loaded, fast changing rhythms and guitars like Dream theater and Malmsteen hysteria, only a Touch more melodic. All Songs are in the same pattern, times it's harder and faster, times again more slowly and more long-drawn-out. The singing adapts to the rhythm and the eternal guitarplaying and solos goes also to me sometimes quite on my nerves, even if I hear the guitars rattle/clink really gladly sometimes. The singing way of Apollo somehow reminds me of Fates Warning abit, just more gentle. Ramming Songs is also not missing here. A Instrumentalsong with orchestra participates also and the last Song of this disk is the calmest one of all, so a kind hymn, as I see it. In the whole is the album quite strong, but nothing world-moving new. Who likes the mentioned bands before, sure nothing do wrong to bye it. But you really don´t need it.
