Bruce Turgon - Outside looking in

“Outside looking in” heißt das neueste Solo Werk von Bruce Turgon, von dem ich bisher noch nichts gehört hatte, obwohl er schon ziemlich lange als Musiker aktiv ist. Allerdings meistens als Songschreiber und hin und wieder hatte er einige Instrumente für Alben von anderen Bands eingespielt. Am bekanntesten darunter wird wohl seiner Partnerschaft mit Lou Gramm von Foreigner sein.

Das hier vorliegende Album würde ich allerdings eher in die Rubrik Journey einordnen, aber auch nur lose. Denn „Outside looking in“ reicht an die Klasse der beiden Bands leider nicht mal ansatzweise heran. Bei den zwölf Songs ist keiner dabei, der einen wirklich vom Hocker reisst. Die Lieder laufen recht flüssig ohne Ecken und Kanten durch und man kann sich am Ende kaum daran erinnern. Es handelt sich meistens um Midtempo Nummern des melodischen Hardrock mit teils doch recht einfallslosen Texten. Eingeschränkt empfehlen kann man die Nummer eins „Living a lie“, die sich komplett im Hardrockbereich befindet und etwas schneller als der Rest ist. Song Nummer elf „The last time“ ist so ein bisschen die Ehrenrettung des Albums, da er schon ordentlich rockt.

Alles in allem aber ist „Outside looking in“ dann doch nur ein höchstens durchschnittliches Album, was man eigentlich nur eingefleischten AOR Fans empfehlen kann. Bruce Turgon hätte mit diesem Album selbst in den 80ern einige Probleme gehabt; heutzutage wird es wohl sehr schwer für ihn sein, sich damit durchzusetzen.

“Outside looking in” is the name of the latest solo record of Bruce Turgon, who I haven’t known up to now, although he’s been in business quite long already. Mostly as a songwriter and sometimes he helped out with some instruments. The most famous among those would be his partnership with Lou Gramm of Foreigner.

But I would say that the here discussed album is more Journey than Foreigner, but just a bit. Because “Outside looking in” unfortunately cannot keep up with the class of the two bands. Among the twelve songs there is no one, that is really sticking out. The songs are very easy listening, but in the end you can hardly remember one. They are mostly midtempo songs of melodic hardrock with texts which are not really original. But nevertheless two songs can be recommended. Number One “Living a lie” is a nice hardrock tune which is a little faster than the rest. And track number eleven “The last time” is saving the album a little bit; it rocks quite well and should convince everybody.

But in total “Outside looking in” is a regular record that can be recommended only to die hard AOR fans. Bruce Turgon would have had problems with it even in the eighties. In today’s time it should be hard for him to suceed with this material.
