Wenn ich sterbe, dann besoffen
Das Trio aus Columbus Ohio hat sich innerhalb kürzester Zeit in mein Herz gespielt und ich kann mit Stolz behaupten eine neue Band gefunden zu haben, bei der ich sage: Ich liebe den Sound. Nicht das aktuelle Killeralbum „Scars´n Bars“ ist hier wärmstens zu empfehlen, auch ältere Scheiben wie „Six-Pack: Songs about drinkin & fuckin“ oder „Red, White, Black and Blue“ sind raue Granaten. Die Band American Dog legt euch nicht nur eine Wahnsinns-Mucke in die Stereoanlage, sondern gibt sich auch äußerst sympathisch beim Interview. Ich habe Sänger/Bassist Michael Hannon meine Fragen zukommen lassen und dabei kam ein mehr als unterhaltsames Gespräch bei raus. Erfahrt alles über die Band, Groupies die beim Blow Job kotzen oder über Damen, die in die Einfahrt von Gitarrist Steve Theado pinkeln.

Hi Michael, lass uns doch das Förmliche gleich am Anfang erledigen und du stellst unseren Lesern American Dog kurz vor.

Aha, dann lasse uns doch mal an deiner Beschreibung des American Dog-Sounds teil haben.
Sehr authentischer, geradeaus, in die Fresse-Hardrock. Mit einen kleinen Southern Einfluss. Chuck Berry auf Speed!!!
Die neue CD „Scars´n Bars“ ist ein amtlicher Kracher, seit ihr mit dem Ergebnis auch zufrieden?
Wir sind damit sehr zufrieden, alles selber geschrieben, selber arrangiert. Auch die gesamte Optik der Scheibe ist von uns allein erdacht und erstellt worden. Es ist einfach eine perfekte Scheibe.
Dann erzähle mal ein wenig vom Aufnahmeprozess
Die Aufnahmen sind 100% analog gemacht worden. Mit einer klassisches Bandmaschine. Das Album wurde auch mit Liebe eingespielt, aber ohne den Gesang. Der wurde dann später hinzugefügt. Es wurden dann noch ein wenig die Lead-Gitarre und der Gesang overdubt und dann ging es auch schon ab zum Mischen.
Mir gefallen die Songs „Lucky13“, „Got you by the Chain“ und „She ain´t real pretty” am Besten von der neuen Scheibe. Da ich keine Texte bei der CD habe, erzähle mir doch mal was über diese Lieder.
„Lucky 13“ hat ein großartiges Bluesfeeling. Steve sein Gitarren-Solo haut da mächtig rein und schafft sofort die richtige Stimmung. Der Text dreht sich darum, dass man sich Tag für Tag den Arsch abarbeitet und dann am Ende doch verliert.
„Got you by …” ist so einer der Lovesongs, wo es darum geht seine Liebe ordentlich zu vermöbeln. Der Song hat ein tolles Silde-Gitarren-Solo.
„She ain´t..“ hat diesen sleazy Groove, ein cooles HonkyTonk-Piano. Das macht den Song zu was ganz besonderem. Der Text ist halt die alte Geschichte, dass man ein Buch nicht nach dem Ansehen bewerten sollte.
Ihr seit ja nur als Trio unterwegs, schon mal über einen zweiten Gitarristen nachgedacht?
Warum?? Es funktioniert doch prächtig so. Wir sind bisher so gut damit zu Recht bekommen und werden es auch wohl weiterhin. Wenn die Chemie in der Band stimmt, gibt es keinen Grund etwas an der Situation zu ändern. Es gibt schon genug Bands welche sich ständig zoffen.
Ihr wart auch schon in Europa unterwegs wie ich hörte. Mit den Rockern von Rose Tattoo wart ihr auf Tour, da kannst doch sicher was von berichten, oder?
Klar, Rose Tattoo sind einer meiner Lieblingsbands. Ich war schon glücklich darüber, dass ich sie im Vorprogramm von Aerosmith sehen konnte. Das war damals als sie mit dem „Scared for Life“-Album durch die Staaten getourt sind. Als sie sich dann nach Jahren wieder zusammentaten, war ich total happy. „Pain“ ist eine großartige Scheibe geworden. Das wir die Möglichkeit hatten, mit ihnen durch Europa zu touren war natürlich eine große Ehre.
Was kann ich von einem American Dog-Konzert erwarten?
Eine schweißtreibende, energische Rock´n Roll-Show mit einer klasse Atmosphäre. In etwa so wie das in dem Song „She ain´t real pretty“ beschrieben wird.
Ihr werdet euch aber dieses Jahr wieder bei uns in Europa blicken lassen, nicht wahr?
Also soweit wir bisher wissen, werden wir wohl wieder für ein paar Shows rüber kommen. Wir werden dann mit den „V8 Wankers“ zusammen spielen, eine verflucht aggressive Band. Aber die Leute sind cool drauf.
Wenn ich mal unken darf, ihr von American Dog mögt anscheinend Bier, welches ist dein bevorzugtes Gesöff?
Ich trinke am liebsten Newcastle Brown, aber das ist ein verdammt teures Importbier. Ich bin dann mehr der jenige der lieber viel trinkt, als dass ich so auf Qualität achte. Wenn es um das saufen geht, bin ich also nicht anspruchsvoll. Hauptsache es knallt rein. Da besorge ich mir meistens Milwaukees Best Light, welches billig und recht gut ist. Man bekommt 12 Dosen für 5 Dollar, hahaha.
So was wie hier Aldi-Knall, oder wie? Dann lass uns doch mal deine Meinung zum guten, alten Klischee „Sex, ‚Drugs &Rock´n Roll“ hören.
Eher „Sex, Bier &Rock´n Roll“. Ich habe mit Drogen abgeschlossen, aber eine verdammt gute Kombination, oder?
Klaro „Sex, Alk &Rock´n Roll” nennt sich eines meiner Lieblingslieder. Kommen wir mal zu euren Texten. Habt ihr schon mal Probleme bekommen? Ihr redet doch ziemlichen Klartext und nehmt kein Blatt vor dem Mund.
Also wir haben noch nie Probleme mit den „braven Bürgern“ gehabt, die sich angepisst fühlten. Aber wir sind wohl ein paar dusseligen Schlampen in einer Bar in Cincinnati aufgestoßen. Scheiß auf sie, sage ich nur!!
Sind dir deine Texte wichtig?
Yeah, total!! Ich liebe Rock´n Roll und mag es Geschichten zu erzählen die einem so unterwegs zustoßen. Die besten Stoff erlebt man nachts im Rock´n Roll-Land!
Die Texte geben mir die Chance meinen Standpunkt klar zu machen, zwar immer in einer sehr sarkastischen Art und Weise, aber so mag ich das.
Ich mag ja solche Texte wie „She ain´t real pretty“ oder „I´ll keep drinking, but she´s still ugly”. Woher kommen die Inspirationen für so etwas?
Die meiste Inspirationen ziehe ich aus dem Leben, welches um mich herum abläuft. Das macht die Story-Line eines Liedes noch interessanter. Ich schmücke die Geschichten oft auch etwas aus, aber das ist ja wohl erlaubt. Die meisten Storys nehmen aber ihren Anfang bei irgendeiner Situation welche ich beobachtet oder erlebt habe. Natürlich werden die realen Namen nicht verwendet, oder diese Leute der Lächerlichkeit preisgegeben. Protect the guilty!
Meine Fave-CD von American Dog ist ja ohne Frage die “Six-Pack”, erzähle mir mal was über diese geile Scheibe.
Die „Six-Pack“ aufzunehmen war echt der Hammer. Wir haben überlegt, warum sollen wir das teure Equipment in eine Bar oder einen Club schleppen um aufzunehmen. Wir können die Leute doch einfach zu uns ins Studio holen. Das Studio lag schön abgelegen in einem Waldstück an einem kleinen Fluss, echt hübsch dort. Da sind wir dann während der Aufnahmen so richtig abgestützt, haben gut gefeiert und nebenbei noch die 6 Songs aufgenommen.
Wer sind deine musikalischen Einflüsse?
Kiss, das war die erste Band welche mir richtig unter die Haut gegangen ist. Dann kamen noch AC/DC, Aerosmith, Ted Nugent und dann war es auch schon um mich geschehen. Ich war dem Rock´n Roll verfallen.

Dann lass uns doch noch an einer netten Anekdote über Groupies teilhaben.
Es gab mal eine Tussi, welche die ganzen Zeit am würgen war als sie mir auf dem Rücksitz meines Wagens einen geblasen hatte. Ich habe mir erst nichts weiter dabei gedacht, aber als sie mich dann komplett voll gekotzt hatte fand ich das schon recht ekelig. In dem Song „Shitkicker“ singe ich in dem dritten Vers darüber.
Sehr schön, hast du noch eine Zugabe?
Ja, sicher. Irgendeine durchgeknallte Groupie-Tussie hatte mal in Steves Vorgarten gepinkelt. Direkt vor den Augen seines Sohnes. Sie war wohl sauer das Steve nicht zu hause war. Ach, dann hat mir noch mal ´ne Tussi in mein Bett gepisst, aber das war nicht so verrückt wie es scheinen mag.
OK, bei mir wird eher weniger im Bett gepinkelt aber was soll das schon. Du hast einen Tag mit deiner Lieblingspornodarstellerin, wie würde das aussehen?
Einen ganzen Tag!!! Verdammt, das wäre echt anstrengend. Ich glaube ein paar Stunden würden mir schon reichen.

The new CD “Scars´n Bars” is an excellent piece of music, are you satisfied with the result?
Very Satisfied, we wrote it, arranged it, recorded it and packaged it all on our own.
It’s a real Labour of Love.
Can you tell us a bit about the recording process.
This recording is 100% Analog , we recorded on two inch tape and played live without any vocals, we then went back and over-dubbed the rhythm or lead guitar parts and the vocals, mix it and it’s done!
I really like the songs “Lucky 13”, “Got you by the chain” and “she ain´t real pretty”, give me an look into the story of these songs.
“Lucky 13” has a great bluesy feel to it, Steve’s guitar intro really sets the mood, lyrically it’s about working your ass off , and still losing.
“Got you by a Chain” is a love song about beating the one you love! Nice slide guitar in that one.
“She Ain’t Real Pretty” has a very sleazy groove, the honky-tonk piano adds quite a bit of texture to it. Lyrically, it’s the old “Ya can’t judge a book by it’s cover” story line.
American Dog is just an Three-Piece Band, why you don´t use an second guitarplayer?
The way we look at it is, If it Ain’t broke don’t fix it! And we get along fine too, so many bands are constantly fighting, So we’re not gonna fuck with the Chemistry we have going.
You have toured here in Europe some time ago, with Rose Tattoo, tell us a bit about your expiriences.
Rose Tattoo is one of my favourite bands, I was lucky enough to see them support Aerosmith in the States on their “Scarred for Life” tour, I was so happy to see them get back together , “Pain” was a great record. It was an honor and an education watching them kick ass.
What can we expect from an American Dog-Concert?
A sweaty Loud energetic rock-n-Roll atmosphere, just like the song says: It Ain’t Real Pretty, but She’s All We’ve Got.
You tour Europe again this year, when and with wich band?
All we know for sure right now is we’ll be doing some shows with the “V8 Wankers”, who are a pretty damn aggressive band, good guys too.
I think American Dog likes beer a lot, wich is your favourite?
My personal favourite is probably Newcastle Brown, but it’s pretty damn expensive and I’m more of a Quantity over Quality guy when comes to poundin beers, so I mostly drink a bottom shelf American Beer called “Milwaukees Best Light” which is pretty good for as cheap as it is. ($5.00 us for 12 of them!)
How about the godd ol “Sex, drugs &Rock´n Roll”? Just an empty phrase or Way of life?
It’s “Sex, Beer and Rock-n-Roll” for me, I gave up on Drugs, but yes it is a great way of life, a great combo!
Let us talk a bit about your lyrics, have you ever have had problems with your lyrics? I mean you talk very straight in your songs.
We’ve never got any flack from any “Concerned Citizens” , but we have pissed off a few stupid Bitches in a bar in Cincinnati! Fuck ‘em is what I think.
Are lyrics important for you?
Yeah, very much so, I love Rock-n-Roll and to be able to tell the tales of Midnite adventures in Rock-n-Roll land is a blast. It also gives me a chance to voice my opinions, in a very sarcastic manner.
I like those kinda songs lile “she aon´t real pretty” or “I keep drinking, but she ´s still ugly”, where do you have the inspiration for these Songs?
I get inspiration from what I see around me, to make the story line in the song a little more interesting, I’ll embellish a bit at times, but a lot of the stories start out about something I’ve seen or done, of course the names have been changed to “protect the Guilty”
One of my fave American Dog-CDs is the Sixpack-EP, tell us a bit of the idea and the recordings of these six brilliant tunes.
The Six Pack recording was a Blast, We figured why take all that heavy and exspensive recording equipment out to a club, when you can bring the people to the studio? The studio we record at is in the middle of a wooded area on a river, it’s just beautiful, so we had a big cookout and a ton of beer and recorded a live show.
Wich are your musical influences?
Kiss was the first band to really get under my skin, then came along AC/DC, Aerosmith and Ted Nugent and I’ve been hooked on that style of rock since.

Some Crazy Chick Pissed in Steve’s front yard once! Right in front of his son, she was angry that Steve wasn’t there. Some girl pissed in my bed, nothing real crazy.
You have one day with your favourite Pornstar, how would you spend it?
A whole day!? Damn, that’s tough, but a couple hours would be no problem.
