Ich hatte das nette Vergnügen, mich mit Carsten Schulz (Domain, Midnite Club, EX-Mr.Hate), dem Sänger von Evidence One zu unterhalten. Sie hatten ja bereits mit Ihrem Debut-Album “Criticize The Truth” für Aufsehen gesorgt. Mit Ihrem neuen Klasse Power-Metal-Album “Tattoed Heart” haben sie jedoch die Grenzen überschritten. Und jedes freudige Melodic-Metal-Herz jubbeln lassen! Lasst diese Tropfen heiß auf eurer Zunge zergehen, dann werdet ihr Evidence One nie mehr vergessen. Viel Spass dabei. Stellt uns euch doch kurz vor, wie Evidence One entstanden ist?
Also, E1 sind eigentlich aus Robby's Idee, ein Soloalbum entstanden. Ich sollte das seinerzeit singen, aber schon nach kurzer Zeit war uns klar, dass das mehr als nur eine Sologeschichte werden würde. Also haben wir uns entschlossen, eine echte Band zu gründen: Evidence One war geboren. Das ist nun knapp drei Jahre her.
Euer neues Album „Tattooed Heart“ ist ja nun bereits seit einiger Zeit auf dem Markt. Wie hat sich das Album bisher in Deutschland und im Ausland verkauft
Kann ich leider nicht sagen, da wir die erste Abrechnung erst nächsten Monat bekommen – ich hoffe aber, gut!
Wieso habt ihr das Album Tattooed Heart benannt? Gibt es da einen bestimmten Hintergrund?
Nunja, der Albumtitel stand schon länger als es den Song gibt. Für uns war es eine schöne Metapher für etwas, was sich in Dein Herz einbrennt und Du nicht mehr loswirst. Naja, wir hoffen natürlich, dass es den Fans mit den Songs unseres Albums genauso geht...
Wer hat das Cover für Tattooed Heart ausgewählt und warum?
Das Konzept ist auf meinen Mist gewachsen. Ich wußte recht genau, was ich haben wollte. Ich hab das Konzept dann an Thomas Ewerhard geschickt, der auch schon geniale Cover für Spock's Beard und Edguy gemacht hat, und er hat es perfekt umgesetzt! Wir wollten etwas leicht Asiatisches diesmal, was wirklich außergewöhnlich ist, und ich denke, das haben wir auch bekommen.
Ihr habt ja auch ein Video „Virus in My Veins“ im November letzten Jahres produziert. Wie sind denn dazu die Resonanzen von den Leuten gewesen?
Soviele waren das eigentlich gar nicht, da es zwar im Fernsehen lief, aber da nicht wirklich jemand reagiert hat. Letztlich scheint es aber nicht schlecht gewesen zu sein, sonst wär's erst gar nicht gelaufen ;-)
Bis auf dich Carsten, sind ja alle aus dem Bayerischen „Frankenland“. Wie habt ihr euch da so arrangiert mit dem Aufnehmen, Einspielen etc.....?
Das ist relativ stressfrei. Zu Aufnahmen und Proben fahre ich immer für einige Tage nach Nürnberg. Das passt schon...!
Carsten, du bist ja nebenbei auch bei einigen anderen Pojekten wie z.B. Domain, Midnite Club beschäftigt. Ist es nicht schwer, dass alles unter einen Hut zu bringen oder lässt du die anderen Projekte eher so Laufen? Gibt es da keine Probleme?
Nein, ganz und gar nicht. Weißt Du, ein Jahr hat 12 Monate, ein Produktion beschäftigt mich meistens nicht länger als drei Monate – und der Rest vom Jahr?! ;-) Im Ernst, es ist mein Job, und ich mache in gern und so oft ich kann. Ist alles eine Frage des Zeitplans. Bisher konnte ich noch immer alles zusammenbringen.
Im Vergleich zu eurem Vorgänger „Criticize The Truth“ ist Tattooed Heart um einiges Härter. Was waren eure Beweggründe hierzu?
Das hängt in erster Linie mit unseren live Shows zusammen. Wir haben vornehmlich mit Metal Bands gespielt. Mit Saxon auf Tour und mit Bands wie Annihilator oder Testament auf Festivals. Sowas hat natürlich einen Einfluß auf Dich. Außerdem hatten wir durch die Hinzunahme eines zweiten Gitarristen ganz andere Möglichkeiten. Wir haben uns daher bewußt entschieden, etwas mehr in Richtung Metal zu tendieren.
Welche Einflüsse von euch allen, haben die Songs geprägt?
Nun, grundsätzlich haben uns wie erwähnt die live Shows auf den Festivals und auf Tour am meisten geprägt. Die Bands, mit denen Du spielst haben Einfluss auf was Du tust. Letztlich denke ich, dass es für den E1 Sound sehr von Vorteil war, dass wir nahezu nur mit härteren Metal Bands gespielt haben, und nur sozusagen ausnahmsweise mit AOR Bands. Wir sind dadurch alle zu dem zurückgegangen, mit was wir als Kids angefangen haben. Das tut unheimlich gut.
Mir persönlich gefallen die Songs „Moonsigh“, „Tattooed Heart“ und „When Thunder hits the ground“ am Besten. Habt ihr auch eure Favouriten?
Jeder hat da seine eigenen, Robby beispielsweise steht enorm auf "Moonsigh". Bei mir ist es wirklich Tagesform-abhängig. Am einen Morgen wache ich auf und stehe mehr auf die härteren Tracks, wie "Moonsigh", "Infinite Seconds" oder "Virus In My Veins", am nächsten Tag mehr auf die klassischen Hard Rock Tracks, wie "Written In Blood" oder "When Thunder Hits The Ground". Eigentlich finde ich das ganze Album geil!
Die Lyrics sind ziemlich bewegend. Gibt es einige Hintergründe zu einem oder mehreren Songs? Welche denn?
Wenn ich Texte schreibe, dann ist das für mich eine Art, Dinge zu verarbeiten. Es ist eine Art Therapie, wenn Du so willst. Ich kann nur über das schreiben, was ich selbst erlebt habe, was ich selbst durchgemacht habe – zumeist psychische Phasen. Auf "Tattooed Heart" allerdings sind zwei Tracks, bei denen ich mich wirklich habe inspirieren lassen. So wurde "Moonsigh" von "Interview mit einem Vampir", Buch oder Film, wie Du willst, und "Slave To The Machine" von "Matrix" inspiriert.
Wie ich sehe, habt ihr unter Nuclear Blast einen fähigen Vertreiber für eure Band gefunden. Ist ja heutzutage nicht so einfach. Wie habt ihr dass geschafft! Was hat NB an euch gefallen?
Da musst Du die Jungs am besten selbst fragen! Irgendwie war es gar nicht so schwer. Robby hat mit Mat Sinner während des Wacken Festivals 2003 einige Worte gewechselt, wir haben danach Material hingeschickt und hatten den Deal! Traumhaft einfach – aber so war's halt auch!
Wie sieht ihr jetzt selbst eure Zukunft? Was schwebt euch vor?
Ich möchte keinen kurzfristigen Erfolg, sondern die Band wirklich etablieren, zu einer festen Größe machen. Zu einer Band werden lassen, die andere vielleicht irgendwann beinflusst, und vor allem, weiterhin Spaß dran haben! Klingt etwas grosspurig, ich weiß, aber wir sind so tierisch stolz, auf was wir erreicht haben, dass es schon noch einige Zeit anhalten könnte...
Mittlerweile habt ihr bestimmt auch eine größere Fan-Gemeinde, unter denen ich natürlich auch bin. Wer sind den die neueren (aus welchen Ländern), die noch nie von euch gehört haben?
Asien ist nun neu für uns. In Nordamerika haben wir bereits einige Fans, aber worauf ich wirklich gespannt bin, sind die Reaktionen aus Südamerika. Das Album wird dort im April veröffentlicht, und noch kann keiner Einschätzen, was passieren wird.
Welches „Image“ verfolgt ihr jetzt?
Äh, wir sind wir!
Was denkt ihr selbst darüber, hat euch vorwärts gebracht?
Schwierige Frage. Es ging alles sehr schnell. Ich glaube, dass man uns einfach abnimmt, was wir machen, dass man uns abnimmt, dass es uns Spaß macht, was wir tun. Wir haben von Anfang darauf verzichtet, Songs von den anderen Bands, in den wir spielen, zu spielen, um die Leute auf uns zu fokussieren. Außerdem haben wir einfach einen tierischen Songwriter und Producer mit Robby Böbel in der Band!!!

Please introduce Evidence One for us, how do you arose?
So E1 have arisen from Robby's idea, one solo album actually. I should sing this at that time but was already after short time clear to us that this would get more than only a solo story. Therefore we have decided to found a real band: Evidence One was born. This has been almost three years now.
Your new album „Tattooed Heart“ is already spread out on the market. How has the album sold in Germany and abroad till now?
Unfortunately, I cannot say it, since we get the first invoice only next month, well, I, however, hope!
Why did you call the album Tattooed Heart? Is there a certain background behind?
Hm...yes, the album title stood already longer than it gives the song. For us it was a beautiful metaphor for something, what brands and you don't get rid of himself any more into your heart.
Of course, we hope, that the fans are just the same with the songs of our album ....
Who does have selected the cover for Tattooed Heart and why?
The concept has grown on my dung. I knew quite exactly what I wanted to have. I ´ve send the concept then to Thomas Ewerhard who already made great covers to Spck´s Beard and Edguy and he has realized it perfectly! We wanted this time a little easily Asian touch, what is really unusual and I think we also have got this.
You also produced last year in november the video to „Virus in My Veins“. How have the Resonance been to this from people?
So many weren't actually this at all since it ran on television but somebody hasn't really reacted there.
However, in the end, it doesn't seem to have been bad otherwise it would not have run first at all.
Only just you Carsten come not from bavaria „Frankenland“. How did you arrange you with recording, playing ....?
This is relatively stress-free. I always go to recording and practise to Nuremberg for some days.

Carsten you also are at the same time in some more projects as Domain, Midnite Club? Is it not hard to bring al together or do you let it just roll? Aren't there any problems?
No, not at all. You know a year has 12 months, one production doesn't employ me mostly longer than three months and the rest of the year??? Seriously, it is my job and I love to do it and often as i can do. Everything is a question of the time schedule. Till now, I still could bring everything together.
In comparison with your predecessor „Criticize The Truth“ is Tattooed Heart a bit harder. What were your motives for it??
This is primarily connected together with our live shows. We have principally played with Metal bands. With Saxon on tour and with bands like Annihilator or Testament on festivals. Of course this has an influence on you. In addition, we had completely different possibilities by the increase of a second guitarist. We have decided therefore consciously to us to tend a little more in the direction of the Metal.
Which influences of you all have stamped the songs?
Well, these have, in principle, as mentioned characterized live shows on the festivals and on tour most for us. The bands who you play with have influences on what You do. I think in the end that it was for the E1 Sound very much of advantage that we almost only have played with harder Metal bands and only so to speak for once with AOR bands. All of us have gone back to with what we have begun as kids through this. This is in a frightening way good.
Personal i like the most „Moonsigh“, „Tattooed Heart“ and „When Thunder hits the ground“. Do you also have your favourites?
Everybody has his own ones there Robby stands enormously on "Moonsigh", for example.
With me it is really daily form dependent. On one morning I wake up and like more harder Tracks like „Moonsigh“, „Infinite Seconds“ or „Virus in My Veins“ and the next day more on the classic ones like "Written in Blood" or "When Thunder hits The Ground". Actually I find the whole album randy!
The Lyrics are quite moving. Is there any backgrounds of one or more songs? Which ones?
If I write texts, then this is a way for me to process things. It is a kind of therapy if you want so.
I can write only about what I have gone through myself what I have experienced myself –mostly emotional phases. On „Tattooed Heart“ though are two Tracks at which I really have let me inspired. So get "Moonsigh" of "interview with a vampire", book or film, as you want and "Slave To The Machine "of" matrix" inspires.
I saw that you found a capable label Nuclear Blast for your band to promote. Yes, isn't so simple nowadays. How you have made that! What did Nuclear Blast liked on you?
There you must asked the guys by themselves! It somehow wasn't that heavy at all. Robby has changed some words with Mat Sinner during the Wacken festival 2003, we have sent the material after to them and had the deal! Simple wonderful-but so just it was!
How do you see yourself the future? What is on your mind?
I would like really to establish the band, make a firm size no short-term success. To be a band who perhaps sometime influence others and enjoy primarily it furthermore! Sounds a bit flashy, i know but we are so animally proud of what we have reached on that it could already still stop for some time ...
In the meantime you also has determine a larger fan community under which i am too. Who are the newer (which countries) who never here from you before?
Asia is new for us now. We already have some fans in North America but are the reactions from South America what I am really curious about. The album is published there in April and still no-one can assess what will pass.

What brought you foreward do you think yourselves?
Difficult question. It went everything very fast. I think that one simply relieves us what we make that one removes us, that we enjoy it, what we do to. We have done without of beginning to play songs of the other bands in which we play to focus people on us. In addition, we simply have an animal Songwriter and Producer with Robby Böbel in the band !!!
