Mit ein wenig Verspätung liefern wir nun doch noch ein Interview zum Album des Monats-August, und ich gebe hiermit mein Interview-Debüt.
Als mir Jörg auftrug das Review zur neuen Scheibe von Danny Vauhgn zu schreiben habe ich noch nichts geahnt. Aber kurz darauf meinte mein Mann, das ich doch ein Interview mit Danny machen sollte, weil Album des Monats, da gehöre das doch schon dabei. Man da habe ich mir aber was eingebrockt, aber diese Chance lies ich mir nicht nehmen, denn Sänger Danny Vaughn fand ich ja schon bei Tyketto und Waysted ziemlich lecker. Gut, wenn ich ihm persönlich gegenüber gesessen wäre, dann hätte ich wohl kein Wort herausbekommen, doch per E-Mail ist das alles ja halb so schlimm. Nun habe ich mein erstes Interview überhaupt hinter mich gebracht und finde das ich für euch eine Menge Infos locker machen konnte. Mein Dank geht an Danny Vaughn und an Sandra von Undercover Promotion, sie hatte den Kontakt hergestellt und nun ab zum Interview.
My Interview-Debut is now ready to go. I get in contact with the former Waysted, Tyketto-Singer Danny Vaughn, and talked with him about his amazing new CD with the "From the Inside"-Project. Have fun to read it.
Gratulation zur „ From The Inside“ CD, Kannst du mir deine Gedanken über das Album aus deiner Sicht erzählen?
„From The Inside ist ein Experiment, welches Frontiers schon öfters gemacht haben. Sie versammeln eine Band um einen besonderen Sänger. Eins davon ist mit Kelly Hanson gemacht worden, das ich besonders mag. Ich denke als Musiker ist man immer auf der Suche nach Experimenten und neuen Sachen. Ich habe niemals eine Reihe von „Cover“ Songs gemacht und es war schwerer als du denkst. Du nimmst etwas vom original Konzept und versuchst dein bestes deine eigenen Ideen einzubringen und den Song doch noch zu belassen, das man ihn erkennen kann.
Bist du mit den bisherigen Reviews zufrieden?
Ich bin äußerst erfreut. Mit so etwas wie dieses Projekt, kann man nicht vorhersagen, wie die Reaktionen darauf ausfallen werden. Bis jetzt sind die Reviews sehr vorteilhaft ausgefallen.
Kannst du mir bitte etwas über die Aufnahmen erzählen?
Es war, mal wieder, ein vollkommen neuer Prozess für mich. Die Musiker wurden von unserem Produzent, Frabrizio in Los Angeles zusammen gesucht. Die ganze Musik wurde ohne mich eingespielt. Fabrizio und Ich hatten viele Diskussionen über jeden Song, wie wir ihn aufbauen sollen und er sich anhören soll. Einige von den Originalen hören sich komplett anders an als unsere Versionen. Er schickte mir MP3s und ich hörte sie mir an und machte dann Korrekturen oder gab mein Kommentar ab und dann war alles fertig, er schickte mir eine Kopie des Mastertapes auf CD. Ich lud es in mein Roland 1680 Homestudio und sang meine Parts ein. Dann packte ich sie auf CD und schickte sie zurück und er konnte sie dann in seinem Studio bearbeiten. Es war eine Aufnahme per E-Mail.
Wie bist du zu dem „ From The Inside“ Projekt gekommen?
Frontiers und Ich wollten schon seit längerer Zeit zusammen arbeiten, doch war noch bei einem anderen Label zu der Zeit. Als ich dann „Frei“ war, boten sie mir dieses Projekt an. Beide Seiten sehen es als ein ersten Schritt, doch ich hoffe das wir weiter zusammenarbeiten werden.
Siehst du es mehr als ein Studio-Projekt oder als eine richtige Band, die auf Tour gehen wird und so etwas?
Ich denke es ist ein Studio-Projekt. Das nächste Mal, wenn ich mit Vaughn auf Tour bin, werde ich definitiv einige Songs in den Set aufnehmen.
Was ist deine Meinung über die fünf Songs die schon mal von anderen Künstlern aufgenommen wurden, wie zum Beispiel „ Beautyful Goodbye“ von Amanda Marshall, oder „Damn und Sudenly“ von Lee Ann Rimes?
Jeder Song war eine Herausforderung für sich. „Beautyful Goodbye“ war der erste Song der mich überzeugt hatte und ich ihn auf dieser CD haben wollte. Manchmal lässt ein Song dich nicht los und du weißt ganz genau, dass er es ist. Ich wusste, das ich das Original nicht übertreffen konnte, weil es einfach perfekt ist, aber ich hoffe das ich nicht versagt habe. Manches wie „Suddenly“ war eigentlich keine große Herausforderung. Der Song an sich war schon rockig, wie Lee Ann Rimes ihn gesungen hat. „Danm“ haben wir nur so hinzugenommen.
Bekommst du irgendwelche Rechte bei „From The Inside“, zum Beispiel für Texte?
Ja, ich habe „Is Anybody Watching Me”, “Blessing In Disguise” und “Speaking With Tounges” ( welches nur auf der Japanischen Version zu finden ist ) geschrieben. Ich schrieb auch noch die Texte und Melodien für „ Nothing At All“ und „ Always“.
Gibt es Tourpläne mit „From The Inside“ ?

Denkst du, dass eine Tyketto Reunion möglich ist?
Ummm also, ja. Wir werden im November durch Europa touren. Also ist es möglich. Für alle Leser die Tourdaten haben wollen, bitte auf www.vaughn.de nachsehen.
Weißt Du von der Wiederveröffentlichung des Waysted Albums „Save Your Prayers“ ?
Ja, ich wurde angerufen um ein paar Linernotes abzugeben, ob sie im Endeffekt benutzt worden sind, weiß ich nicht.
Wenn es erlaubt ist, möchte ich dich fragen, was es mit den Streitigkeiten, bei Waysted, bezüglich der Songwriter Credits auf sich hat?
Das ist ganz einfach. Ich habe alle Texte auf dem Album geschrieben, außer den von „Heaven Tonight“ und den Chorus von „So Long“. Peter schrieb die meisten Nummer und ich füllte die Lücken. Peter und Ich hatten alles schon fertig, bevor Paul überhaupt mit von der Partie war. Sie und ihr Manager hatten beschlossen, dass sie mich bezahlen würden brauchten sie mir keine Credits geben. Ich hatte Ahnung davon, bis das Album veröffentlicht wurde.
Planst du eine neue Solo CD?
Ich würde gerne 2005 eine neue Vaughn CD herausbringen. Andere Projekte haben mir dafür bis jetzt nur keine Zeit gelassen, aber ich habe schon ein paar Songideen die ich machen möchte. Es wird nächstes Jahr auch eine weitere Akustik CD geben.
Deine Stimme hat sich über die Jahre nicht sehr viel verändert, hast du ein paar Tricks um sie fit zu halten?
Ich finde, dass meine Stimme über die Jahre besser geworden ist. Bei Waysted klang sie noch ein bisschen dünn. Ich stand am Anfang und musste erst noch lernen mein Instrument einzusetzen. Ich denke ich habe nun verstanden, wie ich mein Instrument als ganzes einsetzten kann. Ich habe keine Tricks. Ich rauche nicht. Ich trinke gelegentlich und ich versuche zu unterscheiden, was gut und was schlecht ist für meine Stimme
Hattest du jemals Gesangsunterricht?
Ich übte eine Zeitlang mit Don Lawrence in New York City, zu Waysted Zeiten. Ich wusste, das ich auf Tour mehrere Tage hintereinander singen musste und wollte lernen mich fit dafür zu machen, wie es möglich wäre jeden Abend eine gute Show abzuliefern. Von dem Tag an mache ich seine Aufwärmtechnich, wann immer es möglich ist.
Wer sind deine Einflüsse?
Das sind so viele, angefangen bin ich mit den Beatles. Ich habe aber nie versucht wie sie zu klingen. Sie haben viele beeinflusst und tun es noch immer. Meine größten Einflüsse heutzutage sind die Songschreiber, wie John Hiatt, Tom Waits, Bruce Springsteen, Don Henley und Bernie Taupin, um nur ein paar zu nennen.
Erzähle uns von deinen Zukunftsplänen?
Mit Frontiers zusammen zu arbeiten hat mir sehr viele Türen geöffnet. Ich hoffe, das ich in vielen Sachen mitmischen werde. Ich werde beim Project „Once and Future King“ mitmachen. Gary Hughes hat mich überzeugt mit anderen Leuten zusammenzuarbeiten. Ich werde auf Demos singen. Alles was du willst. Ich lebe um zu singen. Singen ist keine Arbeit und es ist schwerer als ein Tagesjob.

Congratulations to your CD „From The Inside," tell me your thoughts about it from your point of view?
"From The Inside" is an experiment of sorts. Frontiers has done recordings like this before where they assembled a group of songs around a particular singer. The one they did with Kelly Hanson was one that I particularly liked. As a musician I think that you should always be looking for a reason to expand and try new things. I had never done a group of "cover" songs before and it was more difficult that you would think. Taking something from the original writer's concept and trying your best to make it your own while still staying true to the song itself.
Are you satisfied with the reviews so far?
I'm extremely pleased. With something like this you just have no idea how people are going to react and, so far, the reviews have been tremendously favorable.
Can you tell us something about the recordings, please.
It was, again, a completely new process for me. The musicians were put together and rehearsed in Los Angeles by our stalwart producer, Fabrizio. All the music was recorded without my being there. Fabrizio and I had many discussions about each song. About how we wanted to approach them, how we wanted them to sound. Some of the originals were quite different from our versions. He would send me MP3s and I would listen, make any comments or corrections that I had and then, when it was finished, he sent me a master copy on cd. I would download this into my Roland 1680 home studio and do all my vocal tracks. Then I put those onto cd, sent them back to him, and he assembled them all at his studio. This was recording by e-mail!
How did you come to the "From The Inside" Project?
Frontiers and I have been interested in working together for quite a while, but I was with another label at the time. Once I was free to move on, they were there proposing this project. We both consider it like a first date but I am hoping that we will continue to work together.
You see it like a studio project or like a real band, that go on tour or stuff like that?
I think it is just a studio project. The next time I do a Vaughn tour, we will definitely be doing some of the songs in our set, though.
What are your thoughts about the five songs there were usually recordes by other artist like Amanda Marshall – Beautyful Goodbye, Lee Ann Rimes- Damn, Suddenly?
They were all challenges in their own way. "Beautiful Goodbye" was the song that first convinced me that I wanted to do this cd. Sometimes a song just grabs you and you know you have to have it! I knew that I could never beat the original, as it is perfect, but I hope that I did it justice. Something like "Suddenly" wasn't really a big change. That song was a rocker on the Leann Rimes recording as well. "Damn" however, was one that we really put through the ringer!
Did you have any credit for song writing on FTI, maybe for lyrics?
Yes, I wrote "Is Anybody Watching Me," "Blessing In Disguise," and "Speaking In Tongues" (which is only on the Japanese version) . I also wrote the lyrics and melodies for "Nothing At All" and "Always"
Any plans of touring with "From The Inside"?
Not so far.
Do you think a Tyketto Reunion is possible?

Do you know about the Re-release of Waysted CD "Save Your Prayers"?
Yes, in fact I was called to contribute some comments to the liner notes for it. I don't know whether they used them in the end.
If its allowed, can I ask about the song writing credits argument with Waysted?
It's simple really. I wrote all the lyrics on the album with the exception of "Heaven Tonight" and the chorus of "So Long." Pete wrote a number of the song titles and left me to fill in the blanks. In fact, he and I mapped out quite a bit of the music before Paul was even involved. They and their manager decided that since they were paying me for my work that it wasn't necessary to put my name in the writing credits. I was unaware of that decision until the cd came out.
Have you any plans for recording a new Solo CD?
I would like to have a new Vaughn cd out in 2005. Other projects have been taking up my time lately, but I've got quite a few song ideas that I want to do. Plus, I also want to make another solo acoustic cd next year as well.
Your voice has not change very much over the years, do you have any tricks to keep it in shape?
I do feel that my voice has gotten better over the years since the Waysted days. I think back then I sounded a bit thin. I was just learning my instrument back then. I feel like I have a much greater understanding of my instrument as a whole now. No tricks. I don't smoke. I'm really only an occasional drinker and I generally try to be sensible about what's good for my throat and what isn't.
Do you ever have singing lessons?
I studied for a while with Don Lawrence in New York City. That was back in the Waysted days. I knew that I would be touring and singing many days in a row and needed to learn how to pace myself. How to be able to give good performances each night. To this day I use his warm up techniques whenever it's possible.
Who are your influences?
There are so many! It started with the Beatles. Even though I have never tried to make music like theirs, they influence anything any of us do in music. My main influences now are the lyric writers that I love. John Hiatt, Tom Waits, Bruce Springsteen, Don Henley, and Bernie Taupin, to name a few.
Tell us about your plans in the future?
Working with Frontiers has already opened up a lot of new doors for me so I'm hoping to be involved in a number of different things. Not just my own recordings, but, being a part of the "Once and Future King" project with Gary Hughes made me really want to work with other people on their music. I'll sing on demos! Whatever you need. I live to sing. And singing isn't work and it beats the hell out of a day job!
Any last words for our readers?
Thank you for your interest. Now, more than ever, it's the fans that are keeping melodic rock music alive, since it isn't a mainstream form of music anymore. We are all very grateful.
