Hallo Paul, ich danke dir das du dir Zeit nimmst für dieses Interview und gratuliere dir zu deinem absolut tollen Debut Album. Das Cover sieht irgendwie ziemlich Journey mässig aus, ist das Zufall?
Die CD-Abdeckung wurde von einem begabten Künstler gemacht, der sich Dave Williams nennt. Dave wurde von Journey angestellt, um die Gestaltungsarbeit für Deen Castronovos Trommelinstallationssatz für die gegenwärtige Reisetour zu machen. Journey ist meine Lieblingsband, also dachte ich, das es toll wäre vom selben Designer ein Cover zu haben. Aber eigentlich stammt die Idee von meinem Lied "The Phoenix". Jeder liebt dieses Lied und ich dachte, daß es cool sein würde, einen Phoenix auf die Abdeckung zu setzen. Wenn dieses nicht meine erste CD wäre, hätte ich das Album "The Phoenix" genannt.
Von Paul Bonrud hat man in Europa noch nicht viel gehört, hast du auch vorher schon Musik gemacht, also Alben aufgenommen oder ist das hier dein absolut erstes Studio Album?
Ich habe für einige Bands als Gastmusiker mitgespielt, das waren aber meist lokale Bands aus Seattle oder Minnesota die nichts grossartiges herausgebracht haben. Das ist das erste richtige Album von mir das in mehreren Ländern erscheinen wird und ich hoffe man wird in Zukunft auch in Europa was von mir hören, so das mein Name zu einem Begriff wird *smile*
Dein Album ist ein wahres Feuerwerk an innovativen Melodien und man merkt es kommt von Herzen, erzähl mir doch ein bisschen wie dieses Album entstanden ist.

Jedes Lied kommt von Herzen und sie sind alle Reflektionen meiner Persönlichkeit. Die meisten Songs schreibe ich aus dem Bauch heraus mit einem coolen Riff auf der Gitarre. "Leap of Faith", "I've Changed", Date with Destiny" und "Hollywood Movie Star* sind so entstanden, als ich auf dem Sofa Gitarre gespielt habe. "I've Changed" ist im Studio entstanden als ich mit der Akkustik Gitarre des Engineer's rumgespielt habe. ( es ist immer gut wenn man seine Ideen gleich umsetzen kann, dann vergisst man sie nicht. "Date with Destiny" habe ich geschrieben als mir ein alter Freund seine 80's Kramer Gitarre gab....Es gibt immer Inspirationen die mich zu Songs animieren, meine Freundin war auch dabei und sie war meine Inspiration für den Song "Hollywood Movie Star*.
Alle Lieder wurden selbstverständlich in unterschiedliche Weisen geschrieben und angespornt durch unterschiedliche Sachen. Mit der Zeit formt sich dann alles zu einem richtigen Album zusammen.
Wo hast du nur diesen fabelhaften Sänger gefunden, er ist zweifelsfrei ein wares Gesangswunder.
Dave Hendricks ist in der Tat ein sehr begabter Sänger. Er hat eine schöne Stimme und eine unglaubliche Stärke.
Er ist ein Veteran Area Seattle Sänger die sich vor ein paar Jahren gebildet haben. Es braucht zwar mehr als nur Talent im heutigen Musik Geschäft, harte Arbeit und ein bisschen Glück - aber es ist eine sehr schöne Sache, so sein Leben zu gestalten.
Schreibst du eigentlich alle Songs selber, oder können deine Musiker auf ihren Teil dazu betragen?
Jeder Song wird zu Beginn von mir geschrieben, 75 % des Albums stammt von mir. Natürlich können die anderen auch einen gewissen Teil dazu beitragen. Zum Beispiel: Ich habe die Musik und die Lyrics zu "Leap of Faith" geschrieben bis auf einen Vers, der stammt von "Dave".
Die einzigen Songs bei denen ich wirklich alles alleine gemacht habe sind: "Desperate Heart", "I've Changed", und "Look Me In The Eyes".
Basieren deine Texte auf wahre Tatsachen oder sind sie frei erfunden? Ich glaube da eine gewisse Tatnähe festzustellen.

Viele meiner Texte handeln von persönlichen Erfahrungen.
"I've Changed" habe ich für meine Freundin geschrieben, sie liebt die Lyrics (Freundinnen lieben es doch, wenn ihre Freunde kriechen), "Give Me A Chance" handelt über ein Mädchen aus unserer alten Schule, bei der niemand landen konnte und die nicht mal jetzt weis das wir existieren. "Desperate Heart" handelt von verlorener Liebe (da haben wir alle viel zu erzählen).
"The Phoenix" handelt vom "X-Men" Comic Charakter. "Look Me In The Eyes" handelt von etwas was mir Keith über eine Rock Star Scheidung erzählt hat. Nun habe ich die Lyrics WIRKLICH genau auf die Geschichte angepasst, ich könnte nicht von mir etwas in den Song einbringen "smile"
Habt ihr schon Konzerte in den Staaten gegeben und wenn ja, wie waren die Reaktionen?
Wir haben noch keine Konzerte hier gespielt aber ich hoffe das wird bald der Fall sein. Ich muss das noch mit den Promotern absprechen. "Paul Higgins" und ich haben eine menge Gigs gespielt in der Vergangenheit. "Mark Parris" wird bei unseren Shows Bass spielen und ich Gitarre. Was kannst du mir über die Privat Person "Paul Bonrud" erzählen?
Ich bin ein zugelassener Unterwasseratemgerättaucher, ich habe einen Hund, der Barney genannt wird,ausserdem mag ich fischen, Fußball (amerikanischer Football), und ich mag Sportautos.
Welche Bands hörst du gerne (aktuell und all time) und welches sind deine grössten Einflüsse?
Journey ist meine absolute Lieblingsband und "Neil Schoon" war es der mich zum Gitarre spielen inspiriert hat. Von den älteren Band mag ich "Foreigner*, "Whitesnake", "Def Leppard", "Giant" (Dann Huff ist auch einer meiner lieblings Gitarristen. Van Halen, Boston, The Eagles, Bryan Adams, Sammy Hagar, und Rick Springfield. In den 90er mochte ich "Alice in Chains" und heute "The Darkness", "Matchbox 20", Nickelback und ein paar sehr gute Indi Bands.
Wie ist es Musiker in Amerika zu sein, kannst du gut von deiner Musik leben oder ist es schwierig?
Es ist sehr, sehr schwierig, ein Leben als Musiker in Amerika...vorallem als ein Solomusiker.

Du hast mir erzählt wie du zur Idee zu "Leap of Faith" gekommen bist, ist das normal oder hast du sonst eine andere Art Musik zu schreiben?
Ich schreibe eigentlich unterschiedliche Arten von Musik, aber es ist nicht überraschend das viele meiner Songs in die Melodic Rock Richtung gehen, da meine lieblings Band ja wie gesagt "Journey* sind. Ich habe auch schon ein paar gute Country Rock Songs geschrieben im Stil der "Eagles*. Ich schreibe aber auch Pop Songs, härtere Sachen und auch modernes. Ich denke das hängt bei mir von der Stimmung ab. Ich mache eben gerne verschiedene Sachen, auch wenn ich weis das ich im innern ein Rocker bin "Smile*

Als halber Deutscher sollte ich eigentlich die Sprache lernen, aber dank dir kann ich wenigstens sagen "Hab ne richtig coole Zeit" *smile*
Wie schaut es aus, wird man dich auf Europa Tour sehen, falls das Album gut anläuft?
Ich bin schon sehr aufgeregt, am 20. September wird das Album ja in Europa erscheinen und am 21.August in Japan. Ich hoffe die Leute werden mein Album mögen und es wird sich gut verkaufen, so das ich ins Studio gehen kann und den Nachfolger aufnehmen kann *smile* und somit meine Karriere weiter geht.
Wann hast du das erste mal eine Gitarre in die Hand genommen?
Ich habe als Teenager angefangen Gitarre zu spielen, ich liebe es und kann gar nicht aufhören damit *smile" Ich liebe dieses Isntrument und ich werde es noch spielen wenn ich Alt und Grau bin, es ist das schönste für mich.

Ist es nicht schwierig ein Album zu veröffentlichen, die Stilrichtung ist nicht mehr so beliebt wie früher.
Ja stimmt, Melodic Rock ist nicht mehr so beliebt wie früher, aber es gibt viele Leute die diese Art der Musik noch mögen und Bands wie "The Darkness" machen wie wieder etwas poplärer.
Du kannst ein bisschen Werbung für dein Album aussprechen, warum sollten die Leute dein Abum kaufen?
Dieses Album ist mit Liebe gemacht worden, ich habe mein Herz und meine Seele reingesteckt. Ich hoffe das jeder der sich meine CD kauft die Musik geniesst. Hello Paul, I thanks you which you time takes itself for this interview and congratulate to you to your absolutely phantastic Debut album.The Cover looks somehow quite Journey moderately, is that coincidence?
The CD cover was done by a talented artist named Dave Williams. Dave was hired by Journey to do the artwork for Deen Castronovo's drum kit for the current Journey tour. Journey is my favorite band so I thought it would be fun to have a cover that was somewhat reminiscent of Journey but honestly, the artwork stemmed from my song "The Phoenix". Everyone loves that song and I thought it would be cool to put a phoenix on the cover. If this wasn't my first CD, I would have titled this CD "The Phoenix".
Paul Bonrud is not a Name we hear before in europe, you made also before a music, or is that here yours absolutely first studio album?
I have played on other people's CD's and demos over the years as a session player but these have all been artists local to Minnesota or Seattle and none are well known national acts. This is the first Bonrud CD and the first CD I have done that is widely distributed. Hopefully Europe will be hearing more from me in the future! :)
Your album is true fireworks at innovative melodies and one notices it comes from hearts, tells me nevertheless in-little like this album developed.
Thank you! :) Every song comes from the heart and they are all reflections of my personality. The songs always start out by me coming up with a cool riff on the guitar. The music for several of the songs came to me all at once..."Leap Of Faith", "I've Changed", "Date With Destiny", and "Hollywood Movie Star". "Leap Of Faith" I wrote while playing guitar laying on my couch, "I've Changed" I wrote in a recording studio while absent mindedly playing the engineer's acoustic guitar (good thing we were able to record the idea right then and there so I wouldn't forget it!), "Date With Destiny" was written when a friend gave me his old 80's Kramer guitar...somehow it just inspired me to play those riffs and my girlfriend was there at the moment I came up with it and she was the one who gave me the title to go with the concept, and the music for "Hollywood Movie Star" was written in the same amount of time that it took me to play it. That song all came at once and was inspired by the first chord of the song which is a C#mAdd9. It's a beautiful chord which sounds great when the notes are played in an arpeggio. All of the songs were of course written in different ways and inspired by different things but you write them as they come to you and before you know it, you start to have enough songs that seem to fit together to form a collection for a CD.
Where you have this marvelous singer found, he are free of doubts a true singing miracle.
Dave Hendricks is indeed a very talented singer. He has a beautiful voice and an incredible range. He is a veteran Seattle area vocalist who should have made it big years ago. It takes more than talent to make it in the music business though...it's a lot of hard work and luck. It's really a tough way to make a living.
Can you actually do write all Songs to themselves, or your musicians on its part in addition amount to?
Every song starts with me writing the music and in actuality, 75% of all of the songwriting on this CD was done by me. However, most of the songs were collaborations to a certain extent. For example, I wrote the music and all of the lyrics for "Leap Of Faith" except for the verse lyrics which were written by Dave. The only songs that were written entirely by me on this CD are "Desperate Heart", "I've Changed", and "Look Me In The Eyes".
Are your lyrics based on true facts or are freely invented them? I believe to determine there a certain act proximity
Great question! :) Many of them are based on personal experiences to varying degrees..."I've Changed" was written playfully for my girlfriend who loved the lyrics (girls like it when boyfriends grovel!), "Give Me A Chance" was written about that pretty girl in school that none of us could get a date with since she didn't even know we existed!, and "Desperate Heart" was written based on past heart breaks (we've all had those!). On the other hand, "The Phoenix" was written about the X-Men comic book character, "Date With Destiny" was a story I imagined about a bad girl who leads a guy astray, and "Look Me In The Eyes" was inspired by a story Keith told me about a very high profile rock star's divorce. Actually, had I REALLY based the song on the story, it would have been very racy! LOL!!! I just couldn't bring myself to work the sordid details into the song. ;-)
Bonrud already concerts in the states gave and if, how were the reactions?
We haven't played any concerts here yet but I hope to start playing some shows once I'm done with all of the promotional work. Paul Higgins (drums) and I have played lots of shows together in the past. Mark Parris will be playing the bass for our live shows since I'll be playing the guitar. The four of us are looking forward to getting out there and rocking the house! :)

I am a certified scuba diver, I've got a great dog named Barney, I like fishing, football (American football), and I like sports cars.
Which volume hear do you gladly (up-to-date and all time) and which are your largest influences?
Journey is my all-time favorite band and Neal Schon is the one who inspired me to pick up the guitar as a teenager. Some other older bands I grew up on were Foreigner, Night Ranger, Whitesnake, Def Leppard, Giant (Dann Huff is another favorite guitarist of mine!) Van Halen, Boston, The Eagles, Bryan Adams, Sammy Hagar, and Rick Springfield. I also really liked Alice in Chains during the 90's and these days I listen to Matchbox 20, Nickelback, The Darkness, and some great indie bands.
How is it to be been musicians in America, can you well by your music live or is difficult it?
It's very, very difficult to make a living as a musician in America...especially as an original artist.

Switzerland and Hardrock/Metal Music - All of Europe is a Mecca for this kind of music...Scandinavia, Switzerland, Germany, Italy...it's really popular there which is great. I think Europeans have great taste in music! :)
You have me told like you to the idea to "Leap OF Faith" came, are normal that or have you otherwise another kind music to write?
I write lots of different types of music though it's not too surprising that many of my songs are melodic rock due to Journey being my favorite band. However, I've also written some great country-rock songs in the style of "The Eagles", I've written pop songs, and I've written some heavier, more modern rock music as well. I guess it all depends what type of mood I'm in...I really like many styles of music and am a versatile musician. However, I know in my core that I am really a rocker. :)

Being half German I should really learn the language but thanks to you I now know how to say "Hab ne richtig coole Zeit!" which is "Have a real cool time." :)
How does it look out, one you on Europe route will see, when the album well starts?
I am really excited about my CD "Bonrud" being released in Europe September 20th (it's also being released in Japan August 21st). I hope people will enjoy the CD and I hope it sells well enough so that I can go back into the studio, record a second CD and continue my music career. :)
When did you take first time a guitar into the hand?
I started playing guitar as a teenager. Once I started playing I couldn't stop! :) I love the instrument and learning to play guitar was one of the best things I ever did for myself. I will play guitar until I'm old and grey...

It is to be published not with difficulty an album, the style direction is no longer in such a way likes like in former times.
Yes, melodic rock isn't as popular as it once was but there are still lots of people that enjoy this genre and with bands like "The Darkness" becoming popular, this musical style may make a come back!
You can express in-little advertisement for your album, why the people should buy your album?
This CD was a labor of love. I put my heart and soul into every song and every lick. I hope everyone who buys the CD enjoys the music. I'm really proud of this CD and I hope that it sells well enough so that I can afford to record another one! :)
