Mit "Eye of the Sun" hat sich die Englische NWOBHM Legende "Cloven Hoof" eindrücklich ins Metal Business zurück gemeldet. Ich habe mich mit dem sehr gesprächigen Bandleader "Lee Payne" unterhalten und ich muss gestehen, dieser Typ tritt mit seinen Antworten in den Arsch. "Lee" gab sogar gleich zwei lustige 80er Tour Life Storys Preis und ich bin mir sicher dass sie euch genauso gut gefallen werden wie mir. Ich wünsche euch viel vergnügen mit den Zeilen von "Lee" und ein spezielles "Big Thanks" an die reizende "Tallulah" die in mühsamer Arbeit das lange Interview übersetzt hat.

Zuallererst möchte ich Dir für das Interview danken und Dich zum neuen Album „Eye of the sun“ beglückwünschen. Ich mag es wirklich sehr; harte Riffs, umwerfende Chöre und perfekt gespielt. Aber andererseits bin ich heutzutage auch sehr skeptisch gegenüber NWOBHM, aber “Eye of the sun” ist mehr als eine Comeback-Scheibe; es ist eine perfekte Balance zwischen Old School und moderner Produktion.
Vielen Dank für die netten Worte, Vince. Ich freue mich sehr die Gelegenheit am Schopf zu packen um mit Sleaze-Metal und unseren wahnsinnigen Coven Fans zu reden.
“The 2006 incarnation of Cloven Hoof“ behielt die musikalische Essenz der Vergangenheit, hat aber auch den Sound und die Sensibilität der Produktion von heutzutage einfließen lassen. Wir waren geradezu akribisch um ans Ziel zu gelangen, weil die Erwartungen an uns sehr hoch waren. Wir wollten ganz bestimmt nicht unser treustes Gefolge enttäuschen, und in einigen Teilen von “Eye on the sun” denke ich, haben wir uns selbst übertroffen.
Tom Galley hat sich musikalisch gesehen völlig entblößt und hat es geschafft, unseren Sound dynamisch und härter zu gestalten.
Manchmal habe ich Tendenzen, zügellos zu sein, weil ich so viele Ideen habe und mir soviel Kreatives durch den Kopf geht. Tom nahm dies unter seine Fittiche und durch Nachdruck erzielten meine Hymnen, wie z.B. der Refrain, einen großartigen Effekt. All die anderen Bandmitglieder haben auch wahnsinnig gute persönliche Funktionen gehabt. Es ist eines dieser Alben, welches viele Elemente enthält, und es entwickelte sich wie eine Art Frankenstein. Die Chemie hat vollends gestimmt. Eine besondere Erwähnung muss hier auch an Mika Jussila (HIM) nach Norwegen gehen. Er machte seinen Job unglaublich gut, indem er den „Final Cut“ vornahm; dieser Kerl ist ein absolutes Genie.
Wie siehst du den Vergleich zwischen den ersten 80er Jahren Aufnahmen und “Eye of the sun”?
Ja, ich sehe eine Verbindung, denn das erste Album war ein wirklicher Meilenstein, wir ergründeten neues Land und alles war ein kühnes und neues Erlebnis. „Eye of the sun“ ist zwar auch ein Meilenstein, obwohl es ein völlig anderer Ansatz ist. Es ist gleichermaßen innovativ, da wir Thrash Power mit Melodie verschmolzen haben. Die Essenzen der Vergangenheit wurden beibehalten, aber nun wurden auch moderne Attitüden hinzugefügt sowie moderne Produktion. Dies ist einzigartig und die Kritiker und Metalanhängerschaft ziehen zum Glück mit, indem sie’s gut finden.
Lee, was hast du in den letzten 17 Jahren eigentlich gemacht? Ich denk kaum, dass du nur Fußball geschaut hast...
Du meine Güte, ist das wirklich schon so lange her? Wohlgemerkt hab ich wirklich viel Fußball geguckt, wenn es denn kam.
Nun, als erstes hab ich mich aus all den gesetzlichen Verträgen befreit, die Cloven Hoof behindert haben, Fortschritte zu machen. Wir sind nun von allen Fängen befreit und können in eine neue Ära der Band schreiten. Wir sind an einem Level angelangt, an dem wir einfach so unsere Musik spielen könne, frei von allen Einschränkungen oder versteckten Agenden, und das fühlt sich gut an. Es ist die Wahrheit wenn ich sage, dass kein einziger Tag vergangen ist, an dem ich nicht an Cloven Hoof Material gearbeitet und geschrieben habe, um es dann irgendwann zu verwenden, wenn die Zeit reif dafür sein würde. Nun kann ich sagen, dass ich ein beträchlichtes Arsenal von Songs für die Fans auf Lager habe, um es in Zukunft zu hören.
als ich in diesen Jahren die Bandsituation nur betrachtet habe, habe ich einen Abschluss in Multimediagrafik erlangt. Eine zeitweilige Karriere darin half mir, das Equipment zu finanzieren, welches ich beispielsweise für die Demos brauchte. Ich hatte keinerlei Interessen an den Firmen, die mich beschäftigten, weshalb ich immer nur Hoof-Kunst designet habe und die Emails der Fans beantwortet habe, lol. Einmal wurde ich an einem Samstagnachmittag zur Arbeit berufen. Da ich dachte, ich sei alleine im Büro, nahm ich mein schwarzes Les Paul custom hervor, ein Aufnahmegerät und entschied mich “zur Hölle mit der Grafik”… ich habe den ganzen Tag Lieder gesungen! Mein Boss tauchte auf und wurde wütend, also hab ich dem Bastard meine Gitarre über den Kopf gezogen und ließ ihn bewusstlos liegen (er hat noch immer eine Narbe auf seiner Glatze davon). Danach ging ich nie wieder zurück... Ich frag mich gerade, ob dieser Scheißkerl wohl immer noch da liegt?
Nachdem die vertraglichen Banden gelöst waren, hab ich sofort ein komplettes, neues Cloven Hoof Album geschrieben und hab die alte Band wieder zusammengetrommelt. Wir haben Demos eingespielt und nachgeschaut, was die europäischen Tourneen so hergaben, um einen grossen Fang zu landen. Leider waren Andy, Wood und Jon Brown zu sehr gebunden, als dass sie 100% für die Band hätten geben können, also liess ich sie gehen. Russ North lebte in Spanien, deswegen war es unmöglich für ihn, in England für ein neues Album zu arbeiten.
Ich traf mich mit dem Produzenten Tom Galley und wir verabredeten, zusammen zu arbeiten. Er liebte die neuen Stücke, die ich geschrieben hatte, also wurde Andy zur Gitarre rekrutiert, Matt Morton übernahm die Stimme und Lynch Radinskey die Drums. Sie alle hatten schon zuvor mit Tom gearbeitet, demnach wusste ich bestens, dass diese Jungs den Job gut machen würden, was sie auch taten. Wir passten als Menschen und Musiker super zusammen.
das erste Kriterium, welches wir einhalten wollten, war, dass das Album makellos produziert werden musste. Wir wollten der Scheibe viel Tiefe geben, sowohl musikalisch wie auch lyrisch. Es umfasst ein grossen Spektrum an Material und Konzepte.
“Eye of the sun” ist ohne Zweifel das beste CLOVEN HOOF Album. Jeder Song ist direkt und klingt episch. Wir werden so gut wie jedes Lied davon live spielen, weil es alles wunderbare Stücke sind. Tom Galley hat ebenso Wunder mit der Produktion vollbracht. Es ist knackig, geschichtet und kräftig as hell!
Absolut, die Produktion ist verflucht geil. Ich liebe den Opener „Inquisitor“; es ist ein perfekter Heavy Metal Song mit grossartiger Stimme und Riffs. Welches ist dein Lieblingslied und warum?
Ausgezeichnete Wahl! „Inquisitor“ ist natürlich eine meiner allerliebsten Hoof Kompositionen. Ich bin überzeugt, dass auch „Angels in hell“ und „King for a day“ zukünftige Klassiker der Bands sein werden. „Gates of Gehenna“ vom Debütalbum fährt ernsthaft ein, weil es der erste Song war, bei dem wir unser Epos zu zeigen. Ich denke, wir haben mit dem Lied den Leitfaden für den Powermetal gelegt. Mein absoluter Lieblingssong einer anderen Band ist „Highwaystar“ live von Deep Purple, vom „Made in Japan“ Album. Ich habe ihn damals gehört, als ich noch ein Schulkind war und dachte „wenn ich mal gross bin, will ich ein Musiker werden und solche Lieder spielen!“
Matt’s Stimme ist wirklich verdammt gut… wann hat er angefangen zu singen und wo zum Teufel hast du ihn gefunden?
Yeah, Matty-Boy ist ein wahrhaftig guter Sänger. Ich hab ihn damals das erste Mal gesehen, als er auf der Bühne der “Whole lotta metal”-Tour sang. Tony Martin von Black Sabbath, Carl Sentence von Krokus und Matt performten die grössten Metal-Hits. Die andere band hatte noch Andy Shortland als neuen Gitarristen. Ich war von beiden beeindruckt und Tom Galley hatte das Glück, die beiden auf seinem neuen Album „Psychofantasy“ zu haben. Ich sagte ihm, er solle sie mal fragen, ob sie nicht Lust hätten, bei Hoof mitzumachen. Und sie sind aufgesprungen.
Tom sagt, Lynch Radinsky sei einer der besten Drummer, mit dem er je zusammen gearbeitet hat und würde demnach auch perfekt für die Band sein... er hatte Recht! Somit hatte Cloven Hoof ein neues Line up, welches sogar noch besser war, als das davorige.
Warum hast du den Namen „Cloven Hoof“ gewählt? Und weißt du, was mit den anderen Elementen Wind, Feuer und Erde passiert ist?
Schon von Anfang an wollte ich nicht, dass die Band ein Standart-Act wird mit offensichtlichen Namen und Musik. Ich wollte bahnbrechend sein und ein Original, die Musik musste episch sein und trotzdem provozierend und der Name musste auch die reflektieren. „Cloven hoof“ zu zeigen, meint auch, deine teuflische Seite zu offenbaren, damit sie dich übernehmen kann.
ich hatte schon immer eine Faszination übrig für das Okkulte und Horrorfilme, also wollte ich den Namen und das Material der Band darin reflektieren. Der „Spitzname“ einer Band muss einen Wiedererkennungswert haben und stark sein, damit es das Publikum einfach schreien kann. Dann habe ich mir alles niedergeschrieben, was in Verbindung mit einem okkultistischen Wort gebracht werden kann. Der Name, der mir dabei sofort durch den Kopf schoss, war..... Cloven Hoof!
Steve Rounds, Dave Potter und Kevin Poutney waren brilliante Musiker und bleiben in Erinnerung als tolle Menschen. Aber es war die alte Leier mit den Freundinnen und sich niederlassen; ein trauriger Verlust für die Musik. Das ist das Verderben von vielen Bands, wenn Frauen da sind, die bewirken, dass Männer einen geregelten Alltag haben. Aber niemand kommt zwischen mich und meine Band, Heavy Metal und Cloven Hoof ist alles, wofür ich lebe und ich werde es solange machen, wie ich noch gute Musik für meine Fans schreiben kann.
Was waren die Ideale des Namens “Claven Hoof” und den Elementen?
wir wollten die ultimative Metal Band sein, mit der ultimativen Musik, dem Konzept und des Images. Gleich zu Beginn kam mir die Idee, die vier Elemente zu personifizieren durch die Bandmitglieder, weil in der Hexerei wird der magische Kreis von den Geistern der Wachtürme im Süden, Osten, Westen und Norden. Die haben alle die ihnen zugewiesenen Elemente Feuer, Wasser, Erde und Wind.
der Sound der Instrumente könnte auch die Ansicht unterstützen, dass der Donner den Bass darstellt, das Erdbeben der Drums, kreativ fliegende Melodien der Stimmen und die rote, heiss spielende Gitarre.
jeder wurden unter einem bestimmten Sternzeichen geboren und auch da wird den Elementen eine bestimmte Eigenschaft zugeordnet. Komischerweise passen die ganzen Sternzeichen der Band jeweils perfekt. Ich bin Zwillinge, also Luft, Steve ist Schütze, also Feuer. Kevin ist Stier und somit Erde und Dave ein Fische. Es war unheimlich, dass alles so perfekt zusammen zu passen schien.
Eine logische Folgerung des Konzeptes wäre ein Comic-Buch. Jeder Charakter würde die passenden Superkräfte haben und würden die Herrschaft über die Kreaturen haben, die mit ihnen verbunden sind. Die Herren der Elemente könnten Himmelszitadellen haben, Königreiche, stygische Unterwelten und Herrschaftsgebiete im Wald, um Gericht zu halten. Die Reichweite wäre unermesslich und wäre ein Marketingtraum. Ich hatte sogar schon eine Story parat, wie vier normale Musiker dazu gekommen sind, Supermächte zu erhalten. Ich bin sicher, du würdest mir zustimmen, dass dies alles sehr einfallsreich ist und riesiges Potential hätte, wenn Steven Spielberg sich der Sache annehmen würde. Kiss war die einzige Band, die es jemals dazu gebracht hat, in der Comic-Mythologie eine Nische zu finden, aber ich denke, das Cloven Hoof Konzept hätte mehr Tiefe und wäre kohärenter.
Jau, das Konzept ist wirklich klasse und du hast recht ich könnte mir dies wirklich gut als Marcel Comic vorstellen. Nun, zur Abwechslung noch ein bisschen Funstuff... was kommt dir in den Sinn, wenn du folgende Ausdrücke siehst?
- NWOBHM - Beste Metalbewegung, die es je gab! Die Ära, als sie erstmals in England eingefallen ist, war magisch. Es wäre toll, würden diese glorreichen Tage zurückkehren.
- Groupies – sie machen diesen Lebensstil sicherlich lebenswert. Gott beschütze sie! They certainly know how to Suck seed in life lol.
- The Band Hammerfall – grossartige Band, ich frage mich, ob wir für sie ein Einfluss waren? Sie klingen manchmal ein bisschen nach uns.
- The Darkness Hype in the United Kingdom - diese Band ist eine echte Lumbalpunktion! Aber hey, ich denke, sie hören damit auf. Aber wie kannst du The Darkness ernst nehmen?
- The 80’s – einige meiner wichtigsten Erinnerungen sind in dieser Zeitspanne bewahrt. Nwobhm regierte die Strassen und es gab haufenweise cooler, neuer Bands von überall her
.
- David Lee Roth – eigentlich überhaupt kein guter Sänger, aber was für ein Showman! Ich sah sie bei der Debütshow in England, als Van Halen der Supportact von Sabbath war, sie waren grossartig. Er liebt bestimmt den Klang seiner eigenen Stimme.
- Football WM – meine zweite Religion neben der Musik. Wie die Wolverhampton Wanderers an einem Samstag spielen bedeutet die Laune der folgende Woche. Wenn sie verlieren, bin ich fuchsteufelswild.
- Iron Maiden - brillante Band und liebenswerte Menschen, die auf dem Boden geblieben sind. Cloven Hoof haben sie schon einige Male getroffen. Up the Irons! Dave Murray lieh mir einst einen Kuli, damit ich fanatischen Hoof-Fans die Jacken signieren konnte. Ich gab ihn ihm niemals zurück… Sorry mate!
- Mötley Crüe – nicht mein Ding, zu sehr gekünstelt das ganze.
- The United States - da gibt es einige unserer treusten Fans, ich kann’s kaum erwarten, nächstes Jahr wieder dort zu spielen!

ich würde sagen, “ich war da, ich hab’s getan… aber wieso das ganze Leben lang wie ein Trottel aussehen“.. lol
Hehe, ja die alten Fotos sind wirklich witzig. Hörst du dir auch neuere Bands an? Wenn ja, welche wären das?
Ich mag Mudvayne und Mastodon gerne; aber da gibt’s eine Band aus Detroit, die sich Harbinger nennt, die sind so gut. Ich liebte ihre Coverversion von unserem Track „Laying down the Low“... Respect guys!
Ich würde wirklich gerne eine lustige Geschichte hören, was du so erlebt hast!
Wow, da gibt’s jede Menge. Lass mich überlegen. Nach einem Auftritt in Holland kamen auf mich und den Drummer die schärfsten zwei Blondinen auf uns zu, die wir je gesehen haben. Sie waren einfach atemberaubend. Sie nahmen uns mit zu einem Nachtklub, wo wir stundenlang geredet und getrunken haben. Irgendwann musste ich mal pinkeln gehen, also ging ich auf den Weg um eine Toilette zu suchen und liess den Drummer alleine mit den beiden Mädchen.
Ich starrte in den Spiegel und mir fiel auf, dass mein Bart schnell wuchs und wie rot meine Augen waren (eigentlich nicht verwunderlich, bei dem Alkohol, den wir intus hatten). Ich wurde wieder allmählich nüchtern und dachte „warte, bis wir zurück in der Wohnung dieser Chicks sind. Wir werden die ganze Nacht beschäftigt sein!“ also machte ich mich wieder auf den Weg zu meinen Freunden zurück und bemerkte, dass sich auch bei den beiden Blonden langsam die Stoppeln am Kinn zeigten. Fucking hell, sie sind Transvestiten! Ich dachte nur... Oh NOOOO!!! Dann tat ich das, was jeder Musiker mit Respekt vor sich selber macht. Ich ging hin zum Drummer, der schon beim fortgeschrittenen Zungenkuss war mit dieser liebreizenden Dame. Ich sagte zu ihm „diese Beiden sind.... wahnsinnig! Wieso nimmst du nicht beide?“ ich entschuldigte mich damit, dass ich Bauchschmerzen hatte und mich im Hotelzimmer auskurieren müsste.
er grinste über alle Backen, denn er hatte in jedem Arm eine Superbraut, und ich ging zurück in unser Hotel, um allen der Band und der Crew mitzuteilen, was passiert sei. Darauf warteten wir ganz gespannt auf die Rückkehr unseres Casanovas.
in den frühen Morgenstunden hörten wir Radau vor dem Hotel, eine Glastüre wurde eingetreten. „Payne, you bastard! Du wusstest, dass die Kerle sind, hmmmm? I’m going to fucking kill you!“, schrie er mich an.
ich nahm die ganze Crew um ihn festzuhalten und ihn zu beruhigen. Am Ende erzählte er uns, dass er auf seinen eigenen Wunsch hin von den Traumfrauen gefesselt wurde und einen langsam Strip vorführten. Sein tolles Erlebnis wurde ganz schnell zu einem Horror, als ihn plötzlich einen riesigen Schwanz am Vorderkopf traf. Irgendwie hat er sich dennoch rauskämpfen können und rannte murmelnd in die Nacht hinein.
als wir später über die Schockmomente unseres Lebens sprachen, sagte er später einmal dazu „es hätte mich nicht mal so gestört, aber die beiden hatten grössere Penisse als ich!!!!!!“ ahh, das Leben der Strasse, hm? Nie ein langweiliger Moment.
Ha Ha, geil aber das war echt ein wenig schweinisch von dir, ich wäre wohl auch tierisch sauer gewesen. was ist das Image für dich und wie wichtig ist es?
Ein gutes Image zu haben ist wichtig, aber doch zählt die Musik am meisten. Wenn wir Sci-Fi Kostüme hätten und Masken wäre dies nur, um eine theatralische Performance zu bieten und dies käme dann nicht mehr von den Songs aus. Cloven Hoof hatte ausgefallene Kleider, aber wir hatten auch 18Jahre Musik gemacht. Ein frevelhaftes Image verdeckte nicht die minderwertige Musik, dies ist für viele der Grund.
Was sind deine nächsten Pläne?
Wir planen z.Z. ein Video für einen „eye of the sun“ Song, der dann MTV sprengen lässt.
ich habe genug davon, dass unsere Fans von Schmugglern ausgebeutet werden. Ich have davon gehört, dass bei ebay eine Kopie von A Sultans Ransom den Besitzer für 300$ gewechselt hat! Ich bin gerade am verhandeln, um den ganzen Katalog zu erhalten, der irgendwie nächstes Jahr erscheint, zusammen mit unveröffentlichten Tracks. Es sind alte Konzerte von den Hoofs drauf, die auserwählt werden, auf der neuen DVD einen Platz zu finden. Da gibt’s einige freudige Tage für die Fans.
Ein MTV Clip, willst du mich verarschen oder meinst du das ernst? Wie auch immer, deine wishes for the Future Alder...
Einfach immer weiter gute Alben rauszubringen und vor so vielen Metalfans wie möglich zu spielen. Wir würden jeden Tag ein Konzert geben, wenn wir könnten!

Ich möchte hier meinen tiefsten Dank an dich, Vince, und an die exzellente Sleaze-Metal.com Seite, aussprechen. Ich möchte die Gelegenheit nutzen, den Fans mehr Infos über Cloven Hoof einzuholen und die Power Metal-Message durch die Welt zu verbreiten. Alle Fans sind sehr wichtig für die Band in einer Woche.. und in der nächsten ist es nicht mehr dasselbe, wofür der Heavy Metal gestanden hat. Die Musik war alles, was gezählt hat, es war im Untergrund und der Trend wurde ignoriert. Die Basis-Fans machten ihren eigenen Kopf, sie dachten selber und ihnen wurde auch nicht gesagt, was sie sich anziehen sollten. Wir glauben an’s „Die hard, free thinking imaginative real metal supporters everywhere”, wir wollen eine Band sein für Leute, die true sind. Unsere Musik ist niemals sicher und wiederholt sich auch nicht. Sie ist immer episch und immer Hard Rock für die Gläubigen. Das neue Album „Eye of the sun“ sollte alten und neuen Fans gefallenes sollte Tiefe beinhalten. Einmal sagte ein Journalist: Imaginative thinking means metal“... darauf trinken wir einen!

Willst du noch eine Story, bitte....
Wir hatten mal so einen verrückten Gitarrespieler (er ist nicht mehr bei uns dabei), der seine privaten Teile rausgepackt hat und sie auf ein Tablett mit Chips und Bratensoße legte, worauf ein total Fremder dies dann am essen war. Um einen Scherz zu machen, sagte er diesem Typen „Hey dude, probier doch mal das Würstchen!“. Aber der Witz ging nicht ganz so auf, wie er es geplant hat. Der Kerl, der gerade am essen war, schaute in dem Moment weg und ohne was zu überlegen, nahm er das Messer und schnitt rein. Ich kann die Schreie noch immer hören! Chips, Bratensoße und Blut waren überall!!
Ich habe noch nie in meinem Leben so sehr gelacht, der Blick einer unglückseligen Kreatur, die durchgestochen wurde und das Gesicht eines wütenden Mannes, dessen Essen ruiniert war, werde ich nie vergessen. Seine Nüsse sind so angeschwollen, und durch das Messen sind die Wunden infiziert worden und er musste sich im Krankenhaus medizinisch behandeln lassen. (sein Kopf hätte meiner Meinung nach auch eine Behandlung gebraucht)
Mir hat es wirklich sehr viel Spaß gemacht, dieses Interview zu machen, die Fragen habe ich sehr gerne beantwortet. Grüße alle Metalheads da draußen.

First of all, I want to thank you for the interview and congratulations for your new album „Eye of the Sun “, I like it very much, heavy riffs, amazing choirs and played perfectly. Otherwise I’m quite skeptical with the most of NWOBHM this days, but “Eye of the Sun” is more than a Comeback records, it’s a perfect balance between Old School and a modern production.

The 2006 incarnation of CLOVEN HOOF has retained the musical essence of the past, but infused the current sound with modern attitude and production sensibilities. We have been meticulous about what we wanted to achieve, because the expectations on us were so high. We certainly didn't want to let the die hard fans down, and in certain areas on ³Eye of the sun², I feel we have surpassed ourselves.
Tom Galley has been instrumental at stripping down and refining our sound to make it dynamic and hard hitting. At times I have a tendency to be self indulgent, because I have so many ideas and progressions whizzing about in my head. Tom has reigned them in and emphasised my anthem like choruses to great effect. All the band have put in great personal performances too, it is one of those records that have had a lot of elements thrown at it, and it evolved like some kind of Frankenstein. The chemistry has been amazing throughout! A special mention must go to Mika Jussila (HIM ) over in Norway, he did an awesome job in mastering the final cut, the guy is an absolute genius.
How do you see the comparison between your first 80’s records and „Eye of the Sun”?
new ground and everything was a bold fresh experience. Eye of the sun is a milestone too due to the fact that it has a radical new approach. It is equally innovative in the way that we have fused thrash power with melody. It has retained the essence of the past but as you say it has modern attitude and production. This is unique in this day and age, and critics and the metal buying public have picked up on that thank goodness.
What you have done in the last 17 years Lee, I don’t think you watched only football? haha
Oh my god has it really been that long? Mind you yes I did watch a lot of football in that time as it happens lol. Well firstly it has been hell riding out all the legal contracts that has stopped Cloven hoof making the progress it should have made. We are free now from all ties and it is the start of a new era for the band. We have a level playing field at last to make the music we want, free from any restrictions or hidden agendas, and that feels good my friend.
It is true to say not a single day went by without me writing Cloven hoof material to be used when the time is right, so I have an amazing volume of songs for the fans to hear in the future.
In the years of suspended animation regarding the band situation, I got a degree in multi media graphics. A temporary career in this helped finance recording equipment that I needed to demo songs up for example. I became virtually unemployable because I had no interest in any of the firms that employed me. I was always designing hoof artwork or surfing the web on the companies time e-mailing our fans lol.
I was one day told to go into work on a Saturday afternoon, I thought I would be the only person in the office so I took my black Les Paul custom, a tape recorder, and decided to hell with graphics... I was gonna write songs all day! The boss turned up and went crazy, so I hit the bastard over the head with my guitar and left him unconscious (It still has a dent in the back where it hit his bald bonce). I never went back after that... Wonder if the ass hole is still lying there out cold lol?
After the contractual ties had run out, I immediately wrote an entire new Cloven hoof album and got the old band back together again. We demoed up songs and did the European dates to see if everyone was in it for the long haul. Unfortunately Andy, Wood and Jon Brown had too many ties to give 100 per cent to the band so I had to let them go. Russ North was living in Spain so it was impossible for him to keep coming back to England to work on the new album.
I got together with producer Tom Galley and we agreed to work together. He loved the new tracks I had written so Andy shortland was recruited in on guitar, Matt Morton on vocals and Lynch Radinskey on drums. They had all worked with Tom before so I knew these guys would cut it in the studio. Everyone did a great job and we all jelled perfectly together as people and musicians.
The prime criteria that needed to be met was, the album had to have flawless production, and feature songs that bore all the classic Cloven Hoof metal hard rocking trade marks, and take up where A sultans Ransom left off. We wanted to give the album a lot of depth, both musically and lyrically. It covers a wide spectrum of material and concepts.
Eye of the sun is the best ever CLOVEN HOOF album without question. Every song is immediate and epic sounding. We will have to play virtually every song off it live because they are all awesome tacks. Tom Galley has done wonders with the production too, it is crisp, layered and powerful as hell!
I love the opener “Inquisitor” , it’s a perfect heavy metal song with great vocals and riffs, what’s your fave song and why?
Excellent choice! Inquisitor certainly is one of my favourite ever Hoof compositions. I am certain ³Angels in hell², ³King for a day² will be future classics for the band too. ³Gates of Gehenna² from the debut album kicks serious ass, because it was the first song to show our epic, multi time change trade marks. I feel we provided the template for power metal with that song.
My favourite song ever by another band is ³Highway star² live by Deep Purple, off the ³Made in Japan² album. I heard that when I was a school kid and thought ³I want to be a musician when I grow up and play songs like that!²
Let’s talking about the comeback, what was the reason? Maybe the Keep it True Festival gave you the last kick?
For the record Cloven Hoof were never really disbanded as such, more put into suspended animation. This was due to the aforementioned legal hustles. Also certain musical tabloids masquerading as Heavy metal magazines had turned into a smash hits type publications. In the end it seemed the only course of action was to ride out the dodgy contracts, till we were free of all ties". "It was heart breaking... But necessary. Cloven Hoof was sadly for all intense and purposes in a process of suspended animation... But one day the beast would rise again! Which brings us to the Present Day!
It was an honour to play the Keep it true festival. Awesome, moving and humbling, these are the only words I can find to describe it. We never expected such over the top hero worship from the fans, it was hard to compose myself, seeing them all at last and being able to play for them after all this time. Everyone went crazy including us! The camaraderie and co operation between the bands was marvellous too, no egos or prima Donna's whatsoever. The whole spirit of the event was like a breath of fresh air.
Matt’s voice is bally good.. when did he start singing and where the hell you found him?
Yeah Matty boy is one hell of a singer alright. I first saw him on stage during a tour called whole lotta metal. Tony Martin out of Black Sabbath, Carl Sentance from Krokus and Matt were singing greatest metal hits to packed houses. The backing band had Andy Shortland the new guitarist in it too. I was impressed by both of them, and Tom Galley had both guys playing on his new album Pychofantasy as luck would have it. I said ask them if they would be interested in joining the Hoof? And they jumped at the chance.
Tom said Lynch Radinsky is one of the greatest drummers he had ever worked with and would be perfect for the band also... He was right! Hey presto CLOVEN HOOF has a new line up better than it¹s ever had before!
Why did you choose the name Cloven Hoof and do you know what’s happen with the other elements, wind, fire and earth?
Right from the start I didn't want the band to be a standard rock act with an obvious name and music. I wanted to break new ground and be original, the music had to be epic and thought provoking and the name had to reflect this too. To show the cloven hoof means to reveal your evil side, to let it take over. The church of Satan call there church, followers of the cloven hoof, in short disciples who worship at the feet of the devil.
I had always had a fascination with the occult and horror movies, so I wanted to reflect this in the name and material of the band. The monicker of a rock group needs to be memorable and powerful, that a crowd could chant out easily, so I began by writing down all the things I could think of with occult word associations. The name that really grabbed me immediately was... Cloven Hoof!.
Steve Rounds, Dave Potter and Kevin Poutney were brilliant musicians, and dedicated professional people. But it was the same old girlfriends butting in and wanting to settle down, a tragic waste of musical skill. That is the bane of most bands, letting women boss musicians around and making them settle for nine to five. But for that, those two would be with me kicking metal ass now. But no one will come between me and my band, Heavy metal and Cloven hoof is all I live for and I will carry on as long as my writing holds up for the fans.
What was the Ideal of the name Cloven Hoof and the elements?
We wanted to be the ultimate metal band with the ultimate music, concept and image.
I hit on the idea of the four elements personified by the band members in the first instance, because in witchcraft the magic circle is guarded by the spirits of the watch towers of the south east west and north, these all have an allotted element fire ,water ,earth and air respectively.
The sound of the instruments could also lend itself to this notion, the thunder of the bass, the earth quake of the drums, creative flowing melody of the vocals and red hot guitar playing.
Everyone is born under a star sign and these have the elements attributed to them also. Strangely enough each of the band members at the time matched there zodiac glyphs perfectly. I was Gemini so I was Air, Steve was Sagittarius so he was Fire, Kevin was Taurus and that was Earth and Dave was Pisces? It was uncanny that everything seemed to fit perfectly!
A logical conclusion to the concept lent itself perfectly to a comic book treatment. Each character would have suitable super powers and hold sway over the creatures associated with it. So the lords of the elements could have Sky citadels, atlantian kingdoms, stygian netherworlds and forest domains to hold court over. The scope seemed endless, and was a marketing dream.I even came up with a story line to suggest how four ordinary musicians came to acquire the power of the elements.
I'm sure you will agree the whole things was pretty inventive and had mammoth potential if given the Steven Spielberg treatment. Kiss was the only band that had come close to the full on comic book mythology angle, but I feel sure that the Cloven hoof concept was more coherent and had more depth.
Now for a change a little bit fun stuff.. what does cross your mind when you see the following expressions?
- NWOBHM - Best metal movement of all time! The era when it first broke through in England was magical , it would be awesome to have those glory days return.
- Groupies - They certainly make this life style worthwhile... God bless em! They certainly know how to Suck seed in life lol.
- The Band Hammerfall - Great band, I wonder if we were an influence on them? They certainly sound a little like us at times.
- The Darkness Hype in the United Kingdom - This band are Spinal tap for real! But hey, they got away with it I suppose. But how can you take the Darkness seriously?
- The 80’s - Some of my fondest memories are enshrined in that period, nwobhm ruled the streets, and there were exciting new bands emerging from everywhere.
- David Lee Roth - Not a great singer at all, but what a showman! I saw Van Halen support Sabbath on there UK debut show, they were amazing. When they later headlined the following year, Eddie and the guys only played about 6 numbers all night... All the rest of the show was taken up with diamond Dave talking bollocks lol. He sure loves the sound of his own voice alright!
- Football WM - My second religion next to music. How Wolverhampton Wanderers do on a Saturday profoundly effects my mood for the week! If they loose I am hell to live with. I am told Glen Hughes and Robert Plant are the same, we all are gold and black Wolves supporters to the bone!
- Iron Maiden - Brilliant band and lovely down to Earth people. CLOVEN HOOF have met them a few times... Up the Irons! Dave Murray lent me his pen at a music fair once, to sign the jackets of a gang of fanatical Hoof fans. I never gave it him back... Sorry mate!
- Mötley Crüe - Not my cup of tea really, too contrived by far and the songs are throw away.
- The United States - Has some of our most loyal die hard fans, I can¹t wait to play there for them next year!

Well I'd say... ³Been there , done it... But why look a twat all your life² lol!

I really like Mudvayne and Mastodon, but there is a band from Detroit called Harbinger who are great. I loved there cover version of our track ³Laying down the law²... Respect guys!
I’d really love to hear a funny story about what you have experienced (come on Lee haha)
Wow there are so many, now let me see? After a gig in Holland the drummer and I were approached by two of the best looking blonde babes we had ever seen, they were simply stunning! They took us to a night club where we talked and drank for hours, eventually I needed to take a piss so I left the drummer and the two girls, and went in search of the toilet.
Standing there I gazed into the mirror opposite and noticed how my beard was starting to come through and how red my eyes looked, (it wasn't surprising all the booze we sank). I was sobering up and thought, ³Wait till we get back to those chicks apartment... Were going to be in for quite a night!²
I then made my way back to my companions, only to notice that chin stubble was also faintly forming below the make up on the blondes too! Fucking hell they are transvestites, I thought... Oh NOOOO!!!
Then I did what any self respecting rock musician would do, I went up to the drummer who was at an advanced French kissing stage with his lovely lady... er man, and said ³These two are... Gorgeous why don¹t you have both of them!² I made an excuse that I had stomach pains and needed to go back to the hotel to sleep it off.
I left the grinning skin beater with a girl in each arm (little did he know) and got back to our hotel bar where I told the road crew and the rest of the band what had happened. Then we all eagerly waited for the would be Casanova to return.
In the early hours of the morning there was much shouting outside the hotel lobby and we heard a glass door being kicked in. ³Payne you bastard! You knew they were blokes didn't you? I¹m going to fucking kill you!² screamed our stick wielding Lothario!
It took the whole road crew to hold him, and calm him down. In the end he told us the dream girls tied him up (at his request may I add), and started a slow strip tease. his amorous adventure was shaping up nicely, till he felt a big dick hit him squarely on the fore head!... Total bummer!!! Somehow he fought his way out and ran gibbering into the night!
Talk about the shock of your life lol, he later said ³I wouldn't mind but they both had bigger cocks than me!!!² Ahh life on the road eh? Never a dull moment!
Your a very sick person hahaha, thank you very much for that story, I love it!!! What is image for you and how important is it?
Having a good image is important, but it is the music that matters! When we had the sci-fi costumes and masks it was only to enhance a theatrical performance, not take over from the songs. Cloven Hoof had outlandish costumes, but we had prodigious musical ability for mere 18 year olds. An outrageous image did not cover up shoddy music , as is the case for most bands of that ilk. Hoof songs were multi time change tour de forces and the European rock media understood that from day one.
What are your next plans?
We are currently planning a possible video for one of the Eye of the sun songs, that will be a blast to see it on MTV.
I have had enough of the fans being ripped off by the bootleggers. I heard that on ebay a copy of A Sultans Ransom has changed hands for 300 dollars! I am currently negotiating a deal to have the entire catalogue re released sometime next year, along with previously unreleased bonus tracks. There are archive film tapes of vintage hoof concerts also in the pipeline to be released on DVD for the first time. So exciting days ahead for the fans.
Wishes for the Future
Simply to keep on bringing out albums of consistently good material, and to play in front of as many metal fans as possible. We would play a gig every day we we could!

The fans are all important to the band, In one week... out the next, was never what Heavy metal stood for. The music was all that mattered, it was underground and ignored trends. The grass roots fans made there own minds not told what to think and wear, like sheep. We believe in die hard, free thinking and imaginative real metal supporters everywhere, we want to be a true peoples band. Our music is never safe and repetitive, we want it to be epic and always hard rocking for the faithful. The new album Eye of the sun should appeal to old and new fans alike, giving depth and colour to a whole range of diverse subject matter. Imaginative thinking mans metal as one journalist once said... We'll drink to that!

We had this crazy guitar player (he is no longer with us alas) who once took out his private parts and placed them in a tray of chips and gravy, that a total stranger was about to eat. For a laugh, he wanted to say ³Hey dude check out the sausage!² but the joke didn¹t quite work out the way he planned.
The person who was about to devour his meal was looking the other away at the time, so without thinking, he stuck a metal fork into the testicles of our loony axe man by mistake. I can still hear the screams even now! Chips, gravy and blood went everywhere!
I never laughed so much in all my born days, the sight of a hapless creature clutching his harpooned wedding tackle, chased by the furious guy who¹s dinner had been ruined, will stay with me for life.
On closer inspection afterwards, it was concurred by all that his scrotum resembled a perforated bagpipe lol. Boy did those nuts swell up big time! To make matters worse the fork wounds became infected, and his balls needed hospital treatment (his head needed treatment too, if you ask me!).
