Immer noch Vampir
Death SS sind einer der Kult-Bands welche ich in den 90gern hindurch verehrt habe und leider kam dann mit der Zeit eine Entwicklung die ich nicht mehr nachvollziehen konnte. Die Chance den Death SS-Mastermind Steve Sylvester mal Interviewtechnisch auf den Zahn zu fühlen lies ich mir dann aber nicht entgehen. Leider ist das aktuelle Album The Seventh Seal auch nicht das was ich mir gewünscht habe. Ich habe hier auch mal ein paar kritische Fragen an den Mann gebracht und daraus entwickelte sich ein äußerst interessantes Gespräch.

Hey Steve, ihr seit nun zurück nach einiger Zeit der Ruhe. Kläre mich mal auf, was abging bei euch. Ich habe so nach „Panic“ vor 6 Jahren ein wenig den Faden verloren.
Also nach „Panic“ haben wir ein Live-Album (Let the Sabbath begin“, eine DVD (let the panic begin) und ein brandneues Studioalbum (Humanomalies) gemacht. Dazu kam noch eine Raritäten und alte Songs von früher umfassende Sammlung (The Horned god of the witches).
Ich habe dann angefangen „The Seventh Seal“ Anfang 2004 vorzuproduzieren und habe dann vor kurzem wieder die Arbeiten daran aufgenommen, dazwischen haben wir eine Tour für das „Humanomalies“-Album machen können. Dann haben wir noch eine „Vintage“-Tour angehangen und sind noch mal für die „H.G.O.T.W.) getourt. Die restlichen Aufnahmen für die neue Scheibe haben wir dann in L.A. in der 2ten Hälfte von 2005 gemacht. Dann kam ja jetzt endlich die neue CD 2006 heraus.
Da wart ihr gar nicht so untätig wie erst dachte. Bist du zufrieden mit dem Resultat von „The Seventh Seal“?
Oh ja. Wir haben immer versucht unseren Sound von Platte zu Platte zu entwickeln, wir wollen unseren Stil behalten, aber nicht immer das Gleiche zu machen.
Von Anfang an bis jetzt ist unsere Ausrichtung Horror und Okkultismus, aber es gibt so viele Richtungen und Wege sich auszudrücken. Wir haben es bis jetzt sieben Mal gemacht und in „Seventh Seal“ findest du all unsere musikalischen Einflüsse, welche sich während unserer Kariere angesammelt haben, das wurde nun zu einem Neuen geformt.
Der Sound ist wieder sehr anders wie bei dem „Humanomalies-„Album, einfacher und direkter. Düsterer und weniger Elektronisch, perfekt für das apokalyptische Konzept das die Songs ausdrücken sollen. Wir haben entschieden in LA mit dem Produzenten Fabrizzio Grossi zusammen aufzunehmen, weil wir das Vorgänger-Album auch schon dort aufgenommen haben. Wir hatten ein gutes Gefühl und ein gutes Resultat. Es gab eine lange Vorproduktion hier in Italien, bevor wir mit Fabrizio in den USA weiter gemacht haben. So verliefen die Aufnahmen easy und wir haben das was wir uns vorgestellt haben.
Wenn ich ehrlich bin, dann gefällt mir die Neue CD nicht so wirklich gut. Ich dann wohl eher ein Fan von alten Alben wie „Heavy Demons“, dessen Kick-Ass-Geist vermisse ich ein wenig, oder die Hookline-Monster von „Panic“. Erkläre mal deine Ansicht dazu.
Wie ich gerade schon gesagt habe, wir wollen uns nicht wiederholen mit der neuen Scheibe. „Heavy Demons“ kam 1991 heraus und die Band ist durch viele Musikalische Entwicklungen gegangen in den letzten Jahren. Ich kann dir da nicht zustimmen wenn du sagst, du vermisst den „Kick Ass Spirit“ der Band. Er ist immer noch da auf dem neuen Album und deutlich zu spüren. Die „Death SS-Trademarks“ sind immer noch vorhanden. Es ist eben nur in das neue Konzept verpackt, das wir heute eben präsentieren wollen.
Es würde künstlerisch Steril und nicht respektvoll unseren Fans gegenüber sein, wenn wir uns wiederholen würden. Es gab diese Atmosphären und Situationen ja schon mal. Ich ziehe es dann eher vor etwas zu riskieren und für neuen Diskussions-Stoff zu sorgen. Ich folge neuen musikalischen Einflüssen und ich kann da nicht auf ein paar engstirnige Fans Rücksicht nehmen.
Okay, das ist dann akzeptiert. Macht das Album aber auch nicht besser. Gehen wir zum nächsten Punkt. Ihr habt eine Coverversion von „The 4 Horsemen“ auf dem Album. Warum habt ihr euch für dieses Song entschieden?
Ganz einfach, ich denke das ist ein wunderschöner Song. Dazu passen noch die Lyrics wunderbar in das textlich, apokalyptische Konzept des Albums.
Die neue CD erscheint bei Regain Records. Die alten Death SS-Scheiben sind fast alle auf deinem Label „Lucifer Rising“ erschienen. Gibt es das Label noch?
Ja, sicher „Lucifer Rising“ ist noch am existieren und in Italien ist die CD auch dort erschienen. Regain war dann aber die richtige Wahl für die VÖ im Rest der Welt.
Ihr habt mal vor Jahren eine CD auf dem deutschen Label B.O. Records veröffentlicht. Mit der Zeit bekamen etliche Bands richtig Trouble mit diesem Label. Seit ihr davon auch betroffen gewesen?
Ja, unglücklicherweise wurden Death SS nicht von den finanziellen und Management Probleme dieses Labels verschont geblieben. Wir waren gezwungen unsere Anwälte einzuschalten, damit sie den Vertrag auflösen.
Ich habe es mir gedacht. Welches ist dein Lieblingssong auf dem neuen Album?
Ich liebe alle Songs auf dem Album. Aber wenn ich einen Song wählen müsste, dann würde ich wohl den düsteren Titelsong wählen. Ich habe es mir da erlaubt mit meiner Idolen: Mr Clive Jones von den legendären Black Widow zu arbeiten. Er spielt die Flöte und das Saxophon auf diesem Song.
Ihr habt ja erneut mit Fabrizio V Zee Grossi als Produzent gearbeitet, der ist ja eher für AOR und Melodik-Rock-Produktionen bekannt. Hatte das eigentlich einen Einfluss auf eure Musik?
Ich kenne Fabrizio schon seit vielen Jahren und er ist ein exzellenter Produzent. Das er nun schon mit einigen AOR-Bands gearbeitet hat, hat ja nichts darüber zu sagen das er nicht mit einer Metal-Band arbeiten kann. Fabrizio ist schon in der Lage mit allen möglichen verschiedenen Bands zu arbeiten. Ich bin ja auch selbst Produzent und habe ihn sozusagen Schritt für Schritt in die Richtung geführt welche ich für unseren Sound hatte. Ich find nicht das „The 7th Seal“ sich wie eine AOR-Scheibe anhört.
Auf dem Cover bist wieder mal du allein zu sehen. Erkläre mir mal die Verbindung zwischen dem Bild und dem Albumtitel. Für mich schaust du da wie ein schwarzer Engel aus.
Du hast Recht. Ein großer Teil des Album-Konzeptes ist über die Apokalypse aus dem Buche Johannes, aus der Bibel. Da gibt es diese „Dark Angels“ der Apokalypse welche das Siebte Siegel offenbaren. Schau mal ins Booklet und die Band- Charaktere sind alle dieser Stimmung angepasst.
Dann mag ich mal gern wissen, ist Steve Sylvester immer noch der Vampir von früher? Oder hat da auch eine Art Entwicklung oder Transformation stattgefunden?
Ich bin immer noch der Vampir! Ich habe meine alten Sachen verändert, aber ich beiße immer noch. Komm zu einer unserer Death SS-Shows und ich beweise es dir….!
Ich find aber dass sich die Gimmicks der Band über die Jahre schon arg verändert haben. Nimm es mir nicht krumm, aber für mich schaut ihr nun aus wie eine Cyber-Space-Techno-Band.
Ich finde das Image der Band reflektiert genau den Sound der Band, welchen wir nun spielen. Wir haben schon immer viele Veränderungen und Wechsel durchlaufen, eben wie auch unsere Musik. Die Hauptcharaktere sind immer noch dieselben, also Werwolf, Vampir, die Mumie, Das Phantom der Oper, der Tot. Aber eben wiedergeboren auf eine moderne Art und Weiße. Wir sind aber noch weit weg von einer „Cbyer-Sapce-Techno-Bans“, wie du es ausdrückst, wir sind nicht die Rockets.
Dann sprechen wir mal über Konzerte. Ich denke viele Fans würden nur zu gern mal deine Band auf deutschen Bühnen toben sehen. Wird das passieren und bekommen wir die gesamte Death SS-Packung?
Es hängt natürlich nicht vom Budget und den Möglichkeiten ab. Wenn es uns ermöglicht wird einem ganzen Set zu spielen dann werden natürlich die Choreographien und alles andere mit dabei sein.
Dann vergisst die Nonne mit dem Dildo nicht. Ich habe da mal ne Frage zu dieser „Night of the Living Death SS“-Box, die sollte ja limitiert sein. Hast du ´ne Ahnung ob es davon noch Exemplare gibt?
Ich denke die sollte so gut wie ausverkauft sein inzwischen.
Du hast ja schon erwähnt dass es eine DVD gibt, aber in der heutigen Zeit ist dieses Medium ja fast genauso wichtig wie eine CD. Wie denkst du über das Medium DVD? und ihr habt doch sicher noch tonnenweise Material für eine weitere in der Ecke?
Die erste offizielle DVD nennt sich „Let the Panic begin“ und kam 2002 heraus. Das Teil hat einen ordentlichen Erfolg hier in Italien gehabt. Nun arbeite ich an einer Doppel-Anthology-DVD, welche die History der Band enthalten wird. Da kommen dann mehr als 30 Videoclips, Live-Ausschnitte und eine besondere Dokumentation mit drauf, es wird um all die verrückten Sachen gehen, welche in den letzten 30 Jahren bei uns passiert sind. Ich weiß noch nicht wann die DVD fertig sein wird, ich hoffe aber sehr noch am Ende des Jahres.
Was für Musik ziehst du dir Privat und Zuhause so rein?
Ich höre mir alle Arten von Musik an, ohne Vorurteil. Ich kann „gute“ oder „schlechte“ Musik in jeder Richtung finden. Es hängt dann von meiner Mentalen Verfassung ab, in der ich mich gerade befinde.
Hast du noch mal Gedanken an eine Solo-CD, wie im Stile von „Mad Messiah“ verschwendet? Die Musik darauf war ja schon etwas anders wie die von Death SS.
Ich habe ja schon 2 Solo-Alben gemacht, eben „Mad Messiah“ und noch „Free Man“. Auf diesen Scheiben habe ich meine Roots-Verliebheit mit den Stile der 70ger ausleben können. Du hast recht, beide Alben sind sehr unterschiedlich von der Musik, welche ich mit Death SS mache und aus diesem Grund habe ich sie als „Solo“-Album herausgebracht. Die Scheiben wurden als eine Art persönliche Sicherheit und mal so eben in meiner Freizeit aufgenommen.
Ich habe gehört dass ihr nun einen Deal mit einer Italienischen Wrestling-Promotion habt und die eure Songs benutzen. Stehst du selber auf Wrestling? Wie steht es mit einem Wrestling-Gimmick basieren auf denen von Death SS?
Du musst wissen ich bin ein alter Wrestling-Fan und ich liebe diese Art von Sports-Entertainment. Es hat sehr viel mit Heavy Metal gemeinsam, beides ist Stark und direkt und legt eben viel Wert auf „Unterhaltung“. In Italien gibt es eben diese Profi-Wrestling-Promotion (ICW) und ich habe ihnen die Songs angeboten und sie waren sehr happy dass sie die Lieder benutzen dürfen.
Mit der Zeit ist eben unser Einfluss da etwas größer geworden und wenn ich zeit dafür habe, dann bin ich schon mal bei einem als Ringbegleitung, als „Manager“ oder so, dabei. Das sind schon einige Horror-Gimmicks dabei, welche sich in etwa auf die Death SS-Gimmicks stützen (Vampire, Undertaker oder Boogieman), aber so direkt von uns kommen die nicht.

Ich mag es nicht große Pläne für die Zukunft zu machen. Ich ziehe es vor Tag ein und Tag aus zu leben. Alles was ich sagen kann ist: Im Juli sind wir bei einem Metal Festival und noch beim 2ten Evolution Fest. Wird sind da Headliner am ersten Tag. Die echte „7th Seal“-Tour wird dann im Oktober starten und ich hoffe sehr das wir auch bei euch spielen können. Möglicherweise kannst du ja deine Sichtweise zum neuen Album ein wenig ändern.

Hey Steve you’re back after a few years of silence. Why does it take so long to make a follow up for “Panic”?
Actually, after "Panic" I did a live album (Let The Sabbath Begin), a DVD ("Let the Panic Begin"), a brand new studio-album ("Humanomalies") and a collection of old &rare songs from the first years ("The Horned God Of The Witches")... I started the pre-production of "The Seventh Seal" in 2004 but the work has lasted for quite some time 'cause in the meantime we've played a tour in support of "Humanomalies" and soon after a long "vintage" tour for the "H.G.O.T.W" compilation.... The recording sessions were made in L.A. during the second half of 2005 and finally the CD was out at the beginning of 2006...
Are satisfied with the result and the product “Seventh Seal”?
Oh, yes! We've always tried to evolve our sound record after record, enriching our style without to repeat the same stuff everytime...
From the beginnings untill now, our mood is tied to horror and occultism, but the ways to express it are so many and we've subdivided our artistic travel in seven differents "pacts" or "seals".... In this "Seventh Seal" you could find all the musical influences we've used during our career with the add of something full new... The sound is different from the last work (Humanomalies) and is more simple and direct, more dark and less electronic, perfectly right for the apocalyptic concept expressed by the songs...We've chose to record "The 7th Seal" in L.A. with the team of the producer Fabrizio Grossi, because we just did the precedent album there and we've created a good feeling with him and the staff... We did a long period of pre-production here in Italy before to reach Fabrizio in the US, so the recording sessions went easy, and we reached the kind of sound we wanted..
To be honest, I don’t really like the new album. For me as a long time Death SS-Fan “7th Seal” is big disappointment. I miss the kick-ass spirit from “Heavy Demons” or some Hookline-Masterpieces like you wrote on “Panic”. Tell me your point of view about the evolution of Death SS.
As I told you before, we don't like to repeat anytime the same record. "Heavy Demons" was out in 1991 and the band has got many musical advancements in all these years.. I really don't agree with what you've said: the "kick-ass spirit" of the band is still present in the new album, but in a different way as regards to the past. The "DEATH SS Trade-mark" is still alive and well recognizable! We've only tried to adapt it to the new concept we want to express today... It would be artistically sterile and less respectful toward our fans to repeat always the same atmospheres and the same situations previously expressed. I prefer every time to risk and to bring me up for discussion again, following new artistic influences, even if this can involve disappointment for some less broad-minded fans......
You put a cover version of “the 4 Horsemen” on the Album; tell us why you put this track on the CD. Do you have some special relationship with that song?
Simply because I think that it is a very beautiful song! Besides, his lyrics were perfectly in the same "apocaliptic mood" of the album.....
The new CD comes out on Regain Records, what happen to your own Label Lucifer Rising? Is that still alive and working?
Yes! Lucifer Rising still exists and the CD in Italy was out under that label. Regain has the right for the rest of the world...
You have released a CD (Do what thou wilt) through the German Label B.O. Records. Lot of Bands has had big problems with this label in the past. You have also had your trouble with them?
Yes! Unfortunately DEATH SS are not escaped to the financial and managerial problems of that label and we had to resort to our legal office to break that contract....
Let me know who is your favorite Song on the new CD?
I love all the songs of the album, but if I had to choose only one, probably I'll choose the title-track, because in this song I've got the opportunity to play with one of my idols: Mr. Clive Jones of legendary BLACK WIDOW, who plays flute and sax on the song....
You have worked with Fabrizio V Zee Grossi for the production. Tell me something about the experience to work with him. Did you think that he’s the right man for Death SS? I mean he has worked a lot with AOR-Acts.
I know Fabrizio from many years and he is an excellent producer... The fact that he has also worked for some AOR-Acts don't mean that he don't know how to produce a metal band... Fabrizio is able to work with all kind of music! I'm also a producer and I followed all the work with him, step by step, in order to obtain the type of sound that I had in mind... I don't think that "The Seventh Seal" sounds in a "AOR" style...!!!
On the artwork is again just a picture of yourself, tell me the connection between the cover and the Album-title. For me it looks a bit like a Dark angel.
You're right! Great part of the album concept is about the Apocalypse of S. John, the book of revelation and the "dark angels" of the apocalypse who reveal the seventh seals, so the images of the cd-booklet and the look of the band is inspired to this mood, developed as our personal interpretation....
Let me know, is Steve Sylvester still the dark and mysterious vampire character or has there a transformation or evolution happened, too?
I'm still the vampire! I've changed my old clothes but I still bite! Come to visit me during a DEATH SS show in your country and I'll show you....!
Also the gimmick has changed over the years a lot. Let me know, are the characters still the old Horror-Stuff? For me you like a cyber-Space-Techno-Group.
I think that the band's image must reflect exactly the kind of sound we're playing, and for this reason we always took many attention in our look and choreographyes, evolving them as every music evolution... The main characters of each one of us are still the same (the vampire, the death, the werewolf, the mummy and the phanthom of the opera), but reinterpretated as a more modern and up-dates point of view.... Anyway I think we are very far from being able to be defined like "cyber-space-techno-group"... We're not the Rockets
Let us talk about concerts, I know that lot of fans would love to see you on tour. When will it happen? And will we see the full Death SS-Show or just a smaller production?
It depends from the budget and from the situation....! If it depended on us, we'll obviously prefer to play a full set with all our stuffs and choreographies, but sometimes, expeciallly abroad, we had to play into ...
I own the limited “Night of the Living Death SS”-Box, are still some of the boxes available or is that great goodie sold out?
I think that this item could be by now out of print....
How about a Death SS-DVD? Do you have wasted some thoughts on this medium? I think you must have tons of material for a DVD.
The first official DVD, called "Let The Panic Begin" was out on 2002 and obtained a very good success here in Italy.. Now I'm working on a double anthologic DVD that will contain all the history of the band, with more than 30 clips, live excerpts and a special documentary with all the weird things happened in almost 30 years of "horror life-style".... I still don't know when this work will be ready, but I hope until the end of this year...
What kind of music do you prefer when you listen to music at home?
I listen ALL kind of music, without any prejudice. I can find "good" or "bad" music from every musical style. It depends from my mental disposition in that particular moment...
Have you thought about a Solo-CD like “mad Messiah” why? The music styles are way different than you have played with Death SS.
I've made by now two solo albums: "Free Man" and "Mad Messiah". In these records I've expressed a side of my artistry, the one connected with my musical roots of the 70es... Both the albums sounds different from what I'm use to play with DEATH SS, and for this reason they were out as 'solo' albums and not as DEATH SS....! They were recorded as personal "safety valve" when I had some free-time from DEATH SS....
I heard you have now a deal with an Italian Wrestling Promotion that uses some songs of Death SS. Tell me more about that. Do you like Wrestling? And how do you get the offer? Is there maybe some Wrestling-Gimmick around that is based on the Death SS-Characters?
You had to know that I'm a long time fan of Wresling! I love this kind of sport-show because he has a lot of similitudes with the Heavy Metal world . Both are very strong and direct and takes a great care of the "entertainment".... When in Italy born a very professional federation (the ICW), I propose them the song and they were very happy to use it like "official entrance" ... With time our reports grows , and when I can I amuse myself to follow the guys in their shows as "personal manager" of some of them... There are so many "horror-gimmick" in the wrestling world, some of them similar to some DEATH SS- characters ( "the Vampire", the Undertaker , Boogieman and many more), but I don't think there are any based directly on us...

I don't like to make long plains for the future.... I prefer to take my life day by day! All I can say is that on july we'll take part of some metal festival, such us the second edition of the Evolution Fest, where we'll be headiners of the first day.... The real "7th Seal Tour" will start only on october and I really hope to come to play in your country! Maybe you'll could change your opinions about the album.....!
