A Good Yankee Rocking Band
Die heißen Underground-Bands stehen zurzeit Schlange und ich versuche jeder eine Möglichkeit zu geben sich vorzustellen. Im Falle der Backseat Superstars war es mal wieder ein Kinderspiel, denn Drummer Scozz beantwortete in Windeseile meine Fragen und legte ich auch gut ins Zeug seine Band in einem guten Licht zu präsentieren. Da kann sich so manch andere abgehobene Fuzzi-Combo mal eine Scheibe von abschneiden.

Hi Scozz, danke das du dir Zeit für dies Interview genommen hast. Wie geht’s denn so?
Ich bin gut drauf. Ich möchte mich auch bedanken, für dein Killer-Review von unserer EP. Das lässt uns noch härter rocken wie zuvor.
Dann stelle uns deine Band Backseat Superstars mal vor.
Wir sind fünf Typen mit nur einem Ziel; wir wollen so hart und viel wie möglich abrocken. Okay, das sind schon zwei Ziele. Einfach auf den Punk gebracht, sind wir eine Hardrock-Band die einfache eine gute Zeit haben will. Wenn du auch eine haben willst, dann brauchst du nur mit uns bei einer Show zusammen zu sein. Die Band besteht aus Sänger Joe Flynt, den beiden Gitarristen Cory Orlando und Mark Giffune, dem Bassisten Scott Clark und mit an den Drums, oder wie ihr in deutsch sagt- Schlagzeug, hahaha, ich liebe dieses Wort!!
Ihr habt nun die „6-for the Road“-EP raus, was stand hinter dem Release und warum sind da nur 2 neue Songs mit drauf?
Wir wollten irgendwas haben, was wir den Fans auf unseren Shows anbieten können, damit sie einen Eindruck von der Band habe können. Einen Appetit-Happen, wenn du so willst. Das „Demolition“-Demo wurde von uns im Proberaum aufgenommen und dann in einem Studio abgemischt. Wir haben 4 Lieder davon remixt und 2 neue noch mit auf die CD genommen, denn 6 Songs machen einfach mehr her. Das erste Demo, wurde von uns einfach so verschenkt und wir haben davon ein paar tausend verschenkt. Und nun sollte einfach mal ein klein wenig Geld wieder reinkommen. Wenn du dir diese EP gekauft hast, wirst du von uns 2 Dollar Rabatt bekommen, wenn du dir das Album (wenn es dann veröffentlicht wird) auch kaufst. So ist es ein Gewinn für beide Seiten.
Also das „4-Song-Demolition“-Demo ist nun sozusagen ausverkauft?
Wir lassen davon nichts mehr pressen, also kann man es als ausverkauft bezeichnen, oder? Ich glaube auch nicht dass wir noch welche übrig haben. Der letzte Stapel ist an die US-Truppen in den Irak geschickt worden. Ich hoffe das Osama sich übergibt wenn irgendwo „Hooligan Cowboy“ läuft.
Kommen wir auf die beiden neuen Songs zu sprechen. Wann gibt es denn das komplette Album?
Das ist eine gute Frage. Wir haben jetzt 7 Lieder zu 90 % fertig. Ein Hauptproblem ist das Studio, wir haben die Lieder alle über die letzten Monate in verschiedenen Studios aufgenommen. Dann mussten wir noch Cory einarbeiten, der erst neu zur band kam, damit er diese Songs gut drauf hat. Der lange Aufnahme-Prozess ist sozusagen ein Glück im Unglück, da kann sich Cory auch noch in das Songwriting mit einbringen. Joe und Cory haben in den letzten Wochen einiges an neuem Material geschrieben und wir sind alle gespannt was dabei rauskommt.
Ich denke, dass die CD das Licht der Welt im kommenden Sommer erblicken wird.
Dann gehe doch mal ins Detail, was die neue CD angeht.
Wir wollen natürlich die beste Rock-Scheibe machen, welche uns möglich ist. Es hat zwar etwas länger gedauert, doch es hat sich gelohnt. Ich denke am Ende wird sich all die harte Arbeit und Geduld auszahlen und die Fans werden nicht enttäuscht sein.
Soweit ich das sagen kann, werden es 13 oder 14 Songs werden, die wir auf das Album packen, welche kann ich aber im Moment nicht sagen. Wir haben ein paar Titel umgeschmissen und das aussortiert, was uns zurzeit nicht gefällt.
Wir arbeiten mit einem coolen Produzenten zusammen, sein Name ist Andy Reily. Er hat ein gutes Ohr und hat einen irren Job bisher gemacht. Er ist auch Drummer, so dass er und ich, dieselbe Sprache sprechen. Es ist leicht mit ihm zu arbeiten und das Ergebnis klingt großartig.
Er hat schon mit einigen großen Namen zusammen gearbeitet und wenn du das Ergebnis hörst, wirst du wissen was ich meine.
Der Song „Love-Story“ wird außerdem, Anfang 2006 auf dem Hollywood Hairspray-Sampler VOL: 5 von Perrisreocrds sein. Das cool, denn der Sampler wird weltweit veröffentlicht. Perris haben außerdem Interesse gezeigt, das sie uns möglicherweise einen Lizensdeal anbieten, wenn das Album fertig ist. Wir werden sehen was draus wird.
Was können wir von euerer Live-Show erwarten? Nur Rock´n Roll oder auch Gimmicks wie Pyros oder nackte Mädel?
Wir liefern eine High-Energy Live-Show. Ein paar Pyros wären schon nett, aber dann nur in größeren Hallen. Unsere Show ist eine eher klassische Rockshow. Wir haben ein paar Aufbauten und ein schönes Backdrop. Ich würde gerne so eines in der Art wie Mötley haben.
Ihr habt schon mal mit den Beautyful Creatures gespielt, waren das mehrere Shows oder nur ein Gig?
Bis jetzt haben wir nur einen Gig für sie eröffnen können, das war im November. Wir waren noch eingeladen worden, für sie am nächsten Abend den Opener zu machen, aber der BC-Bus ist in der Nacht liegen geblieben als sie nach Nashville unterwegs waren und so musste die Show leider gecanclet werden. Sie werden aber nach Atlanta für die „Jaeger-Tour“-2006 zurückkommen. Ich bin mit dem Manager in Kontakt und hoffe dass wir dann wieder zusammen spielen können.
Gigs außerhalb der USA hattet ihr aber noch nicht?
Ich selber mit den Backseat Superstars nicht. Wir würden liebend gern im Ausland spielen. Wenn wir nach Deutschland kommen, können wir bei euch pennen?
Wenn du keine Probleme mit Hunden hast. In welchen Bands warst du vor den Backseat Superstars?
Oh, sicher war ich in einigen Bands. Meine Karriere umfasst mittlerweile 27 Jahre (Wie alt ist der denn?? Anmerk. J.). Ich war in einer Punkband, Metal-, Hair-, und Rockbands. Auch schon in einigen Southernrock/Countrybands. Mein Herz gehört dem Rock´n Roll, dafür lebe und atme ich.
Dein persönlicher Abtrieb zum Musik machen ist?
Ich bin mit dem gleichen Ziel vor Augen, wie Youngster angefangen. Ruhm, Reichtum und Frauen. Aber wenn du älter wirst und ein paar Mal in den Fleischwolf der Musikindustrie gerätst, dann wird dir klar wie schwer diese Ziele zu erreichen sind. Mittlerweile spiele ich für mich und für meine Liebe zur Musik. Wenn es passiert und meine Band bekommt einen Deal, umso besser. Aber ich jage dem Tiger nicht mehr hinterher, das habe ich hinter mir. Ich mache so was nur noch für mich selber.
Klingt nach schlechten Erfahrungen. Dann tobe dich mal an den Sleazy-Or-Fragen aus.

Poison oder Faster Pussycat- Das ist nicht fair, ich liebe beide Bands. Ich werde mich für Faster Pussycat entscheiden, ein cooler Bandname.
Handjob oder Blowjob- Blowjob
Kiss oder Queen- Kiss, ich liebe aber auch Queen. Aber als ich das erste Mal Kiss gesehen habe, das war ein Halloween-Concert in den 70gern. Danach wusste ich was ich werden wollte. Das war so was von prägend.
Erzähle mir mal etwas über deine Lieblingsscheiben?
Verdammt, das könnte echt lang werden. Meine absolute Lieblingsplatte aller Zeiten ist „Highway to Hell“ von AC/DC, dies Album hat einfach alles. Für die da draußen, welche diese Scheibe nicht in ihrer Sammlung haben: Bewegt eure Ärsche in den nächsten Plattenladen und kauft euch die Scheibe. Dann gibt es noch einige andere Platten welche ich liebe, die ersten beiden Van Halen, AC/DC-Back in Black, LA Guns-Cocked &Loaded, die erste Skid Row, die Liste könnte noch endlos so weiter gehen.
Hast du irgendeine Band mit der zusammen auf der Bühne ein Traum von dir wäre?
Ich würde es lieben mit AC/DC auf Tour zu gehen, oder Mötley Crüe. Beautyful Creatures wäre aber auch aufregend, das sind super Typen.
Wann werden wir die Backseat Superstars in Europa auf den Bühnen sehen?
Das wäre das Größte, aber ohne ein Label das uns darin unterstützt, muss man abwarten was kommt. Es sei denn du kennst ein Promoter der uns die Chance geben würde zu euch rüber zu kommen und zu spielen. Man muss abwarten. Es wäre geil rüber zukommen und mit den Backyard Babies oder The Wildhearts zu spielen. We would give you all a good Yankee Rocking.
Was war bisher der schlimmste Alptraum, welchen du in Sachen Business erlebt hast?
Ich habe schon einige üble Dinge durchgemacht, in den ganzen Jahren. Das fängt an mit gestohlenen Instrumenten, Stress und Herzschmerz. Aber das ist nun mal alles Teil des Ganzen und macht dich nur stärker. Ich glaube der für mich alptraumhafteste Part wäre, wenn das hier alles eines Tages mal enden wird. Zurzeit bin ich allerdings sehr nahe an diesen Punkt meiner Kariere gewesen. Die Band und ihre Mitglieder sind ein großes Ding für mich und ich fühle mich geehrt ein Teil dieser Band zu sein. Wir werden weiter machen und dabei unseren Spaß haben.
In all den Jahren hast du sicher einiges an abgedrehten Mist erlebt, wie wäre mit einer wilden Story?
In diesem Sommer haben wir eine Show in Los Angeles im „Whisley A Go Go“ gespielt und da gab es ein paar Zwischenfälle. Unser Sänger Joey wurde mit seinen Partgästen, seines Hotels verwiesen.. wenn das mal nicht Rock´n Roll ist?? Ich habe eine Auseinandersetzung mit einem älteren Herrn in der Rainbow-Bar, bei unserer Aufwärmshow. Um eine lange Geschichte abzukürzen, der Herr hat sich mit meiner Frau angelegt und nervte sich über ihr Aussehen, zeigte mit dem Finger auf sie und machte sie dumm an. Nun, das war dann der Tropfen, der das Fass zum überlaufen brachte. Ich recht groß und er war ein Kopf kleiner wie ich und er schaute aus, als wenn er schon so um die 60 wäre. Es kam zu einigen bösen Worten und einem Handgemenge, er wollte einfach nicht das Feld räumen. Am Ende war es dann soweit das die hälfte der Leute aus dem Rainbow und dem Whiskey um uns auf der Strasse standen. Zum Glück beruhigte, bevor ich noch jemanden verletzen konnte. Das wären nicht so gute Voraussetzungen für mich gewesen.
Dann sind noch ein paar andere Verrückte Sachen passiert. Einmal kam es fast zu einer Schiesserei, außerhalb des Tourbusses in Dallas, Texas. In Boiling Green, Kentucky gab es dann eine heftige Schlägerei. Dann saß ich einmal für 48 Stunden in Kanada fest, weil ich mein Geld und meinen Ausweis verloren hatte und dadurch nicht wieder in die USA konnte. In einem Flugzeug, gab es Mal alkoholbedingt eine Auseinandersetzung.
Alles in allem, ist das aber nicht mehr als good sleazy fun.., und ich mag so was.
Geht ja gut rund bei euch. Was hälst du von Sleaze-Metal.com?
Eine wirklich coole Seite. Ich bin froh über Leute wie euch, und besonders eure Leser. Die sich noch für so eine tolle Musik begeistern können.

Hi Scozz, thank you for your time for this interview, how are you doing?
Scozz: Doing great! Just wanted to thank you for that killer review that you gave the EP. That makes us rock even harder.
Give our readers an introduction about your band.
Scozz: We are five guys with one goal; to rock as hard as we can and as often as we can. Ok, I guess that is two goals. Plain and simple we are a Hard Rock Band and we like to have a good time. If you want to have a good time then you need to hang out with us at a show. The band consists of vocalist Joe Flynt, guitarist Mark Giffune, guitarist Cory Orlando, bassist Scott Clark and myself on drums, or as you say Schlagzeug. Ha-ha. I like that word.
You have released the “6 for the Road”-EP, what was the aim to release this EP? I mean there are only 2 new Songs.
Scozz: We wanted to get something out to sell at shows and to get the fans a taste of what is to come from the band. The Demolition Demo was recorded by us in our rehearsal room and then mixed in a studio. We have since had the 4 tunes remixed and added in the 2 newer tunes to round it out to 6 songs. The original demo was a give a way and we came to the conclusion that after giving away a couple of thousand of Demolition that it was time to recoup some money. Also, if you do buy the EP and then decide to buy the full length, we will credit you $2 off the purchase of the new CD when it is released. So it is a win, win situation for every one.
What about the “4song-Demolition”-Demo? Is that sold out?
Scozz: If we don’t make any more would you consider that sold out? I don’t think we even have any of those original demos left. The last batch that was made up got sent over to the troops in Iraq. I hope Hooligan Cowboy is making Osama choke as we speak!
You have two new songs on the EP, when will we have a full album from Backseat Superstars?
Scozz: That is a good question. We have 7 songs about 90% complete. One major snag is that the studio we have been recording at is changing locations and has been in a state of flux for the past several months. Since we have recently added Cory to the line up we want to get him in there to lay down tracks as well. I guess the recording hiatus is actually a blessing in disguise and gives Cory a chance to contribute to the writing process. Joe and Cory have been writing some new stuff these past few weeks and we are very excited about the way that is progressing.
If you like, tell us something about the upcoming CD?
Scozz: We just want to make the best possible Rock Record that we can. If it takes a little bit of time then that is what will happen. I think in the end all of the hard work and patience will pay off and the fans won’t be disappointed one bit.
I am guessing it will contain 13 or 14 tracks and as of the moment it is not named. We have kicked around a few titles but nothing that has really grabbed us yet.
We are working with a really cool producer by the name of Andy Reilly. He has a great ear and does a hell of a job. He also is a drummer and he and I speak the same language. He is easy to work with and just makes us sound great! He has worked with a lot of big names and when you hear his final mixes you will understand why.
The track Love Story has been chosen to be included on Perris Records Hollywood Hairspray 5 Compilation cd. That is due to be released early in ’06 and will be distributed world wide. Perris has also expressed interest in signing us to a licensing deal for the first Record when it is done. We shall see what pans out.
What can we expect from your Live-Show? Just pure Rock or Gimmicks with Pyro or Girls?
Scozz: We put on a pretty decent high energy show. Sure pyro and effects would be nice in big rooms. But our show is a pretty basic Rock Show. We do have some really nice set pieces that hide the back line and backdrops and such. I’d love to have a Motley kind of set up but that is Motley’s bag right now.
I know you have played a few shows with Beautiful Creatures, did you go on tour with them or was it just a few gigs?
Scozz: We actually played just one show with those guys in November. We were invited to play a show with them the next night, but BC’s bus broke down enroute to Nashville and they had to cancel it. They will be coming back to Atlanta on the Jaeger Tour in ‘06 and I have been told by the Tour Manager that we will be opening that show. Hopefully that will come together.
Have you ever played any gigs outside the USA?
Scozz: Personally I have but not with Backseat. We would love to though! If we come to Germany can we crash at your pad?
Have been in other bands before Backseat Superstars?
Scozz: Of course. My career spans 27 years. I have been in a Punk Band, Metal bands, Hair Bands, Rock Bands and even a Southern Rock/Country Band. My heart is Rock and Roll it is what I live and breath.
What is your personal aim to why you play music?
Scozz: I stared out with the same goal as most youngsters, fame, fortune and women. But once you grow up and go through the process and the industry meat grinder you realize how hard those goals really are. Now I play for myself and the pure love of music. If something happens and the band gets signed then it is that much sweeter. I don’t have to chase that tiger any more; I have been there and done that…Now I can just catch him at my own pace!

Kiss or Queen
Scozz: KISS. I love Queen as well, but the first time I saw KISS, I believe it was on a Halloween special in the 70’s I knew what I wanted to do. They are kind’a running it in to the ground these days though.
Tell us something about your favourite Records.
Scozz: Damn this could take a while. My favorite record of all time is AC/DC’s Highway to Hell. It is everything a great album should be. For any of you out there that don’t have this in your collection get off of your asses and down to your nearest record shop and buy it! There are many others that I love dearly as well. Van Halen 1 and 2. AC/DC’s Back in Black, LA Guns Cocked and Loaded, the first Skidrow disc. The list could go on and on.
Do you have some dream-band you like to share the stage with?
Scozz: I would love to tour with AC/DC or Motley Crue. Beautiful Creatures would be sweet as well. They are awesome guys!
When will you come with BSS over to Europe?
Scozz: That would be great. Without label support I really do not see that happening in the near future, unless you know of a promoter that would like to take a chance and give us a shot. I guess you should never say never. We would love to come across the pond and play with The Wildhearts or Backyard Babies and give you all a good Yankee Rocking!
Your worst nightmare in the business so far?
Scozz: I have had quite a few bad things happen to me over the years from having gear stolen, to fights, bands and relationship stress and heart break. It is all part of the process, it only makes you stronger. I guess the most nightmarish thing is the fact that someday it will end and I am now closer to that part of my career than at any time before. This band and its members mean a great deal to me and I am privileged to be a part of it. We all get along so well that making music is fun again.
You like to tell our readers some wild & nasty Road story?
Scozz: This past summer when were playing The Whiskey a Go Go in LA we had few little incidents. Our singer Joe and his party were evicted from the Hotel…how Rock and Roll is that? I had a run in with a gentleman at the Rainbow Bar and Grill at our preshow party. To make a long story short this small older gentleman was hassling my wife about a table we were sitting at. He was yelling at her and pointing his finger in her face. Well, that was the last straw and I took over. Now I am pretty big at 6’6” and this fellow stood maybe 5’9” and looked to be in his 60’s he berated me several times calling me tough guy and not too smart. I thought to myself something is odd here, he was not backing down. He then snapped his fingers and several large fellows appeared…turned out he owns the Rainbow and The Whiskey a Go Go as well as half of the Sunset Strip. I guess it was lucky for me that the situation was calmed down and resolved… before I had to hurt some of his bouncers…lol. Seriously it would have been very bad news for me.
I have had a few other crazy things happen to me in the past, like a near gunfight outside the tour bus in Dallas, an all out brawl in Bolling Green Kentucky, partying for 48 hours straight in Toronto Canada, losing my cash and ID and not being able to get back in the USA and a drunken airplane incident on a flight to New York, but all in all mostly just good sleazy fun! Hey, it’s only rock and roll…but I like it.

Scozz: Very cool site! I am glad there are people like you out there, especially your readers, who are out there supporting the type of music we love to play.
