Italien entpuppt sich ja immer als eine Quelle von guten Sleaze´n Glambands, so verhält es sich auch mit Cathouse. Eine gute Selbstproduzierte CD haben die 5 Jungs 2004 herausgebracht und haben mit amtlicher Produktion und guten Songs überzeugt. Ich habe zwar hier und da etwas Kritik geübt doch auch auf diese wurde im Interview mit Bassist Gene Joint eingegangen.

Cheeerrzzz to Everybody, wird sind Cathouse eine Street Rock-Band aus Italien, die unser aller Lieblingsmusik liebt und den Rock´n Roll lebt und atmet. Da wären ich Gene Joint am Bass, Mark Bluesman an der Lead-Gitarre, DD Cat singt, Rikki bedient die Rhythmus-Gitarre und Sexy Rake am Schlagzeug.
War der Name Cathouse eure erste Wahl?
Nun, wir haben noch einige anderen Namen für die Band im Hinterkopf gehabt, aber wir haben uns dann für Cathouse entschieden. Der Name ist kurz und einprägsam, zude3m noch ein Tribute an eine unser Lieblingsbands –Faster Pussycat, und so haben wir mit dem Namen losgelegt. Meist du nicht das es ein guter Name ist?
Sicher der ist cool, doch mich interessiert so was. Hast du vor Cathouse noch in anderen Bands gespielt?
Alle von uns haben vorher in anderen Gruppen gespielt, bevor wir mit Cathouse an Start gingen. Ich selber war in einer ganzen Menge Bands und hatte sogar einen recht erfolgreichen Mainstream-Song, mit meiner ersten Band war das. Ich habe in einer Grunge-Band angefangen, doch das war echt traurig…, dass ich da bald ausgestiegen bin. Dann gab es eine Band, welche sich Sexy AXES (!!!) genannt hatte, aber das war mehr so eine Spaß-Band von meinen Freunden und mir. In dieser Zeit habe ich mich weiter umgesehen und bin dann auf Cathouse gestoßen.
Warum spielt ihr Sleaze´n Glamrock? Und nicht einen angesagten Trendmist und macht damit die schnelle Kohle?
Weil, wenn du den Rhythmus des Rock´n Rolls in dir hast und fühlst, dann kannst du einfach nicht anders und musst es raus lassen. Es kommt einfach so, das einzige was du dagegen machen kannst, ist ein Instrument zur Hand nehmen und es geschehen lassen. Wir bevorzugen Hardrock allen anderen gegenüber, weil es direkt aus unserem Herzen kommt. Eine Mischung aus Herz, Schweiß, Liebe, Musik und Leidenschaft, ab und zu auch Schmerz…und natürlich ein gutes Feeling. Kennst du irgendwas auf dieser Welt, was besser ist?
Nicht wirklich, erzähle unseren Lesern etwas über eure CD „in Pussy we trust“.
Wir haben sie im Sommer 2004 aufgenommen, was so gut 8 Tage gedauert hatte, also alles zusammen, das Aufnehmen, das mastern und abmischen. Auf „In pussy we trust“ findest du 5 Lieder von purer Street Glam-Rock, direkt aus den 80gern. Es ist kein Demo, aber auch noch keine offizielle CD. Es wurde in einen professionellen Studio aufgenommen und hat einen echt guten, klaren Sound. Das ist also keine Low-Budget-Rumpel-CD. Wir haben eine Menge Geld für die Aufnahmen ausgegeben, du wirst also kein Gerumpel im Hintergrund hören wenn du die CD richtig aufdrehst, wie es so bei den typischen Demos üblich ist. „In pussy we trust“ ist eine Mischung aus unseren Haupteinflüssen und unserer Idee von dem was Rock´n Roll zu einer der geilsten Musiken überhaupt macht. Zurzeit sieht es so aus, als wenn die CD überall gemocht wird und das macht uns natürlich sehr stolz.
Es ist die erste Cathouse-CD?
Yep, es ist das erste Lebenszeichen von uns. Aber wir arbeiten gerade schwer an neuen Songs, für eine neue CD. Aber wir werden es nicht überstürzen, sie aufzunehmen, uns drängt nichts zur Eile. Manchmal ist es besser die Dinge langsamer anzugehen…, meist du nicht auch?
Wie du weißt habe ich die Backgroundvocals in dem Song „Lesbian Night“ kritisiert, hier hast du die Chance dich dazu zu äußern.
Ahhaha, kein Thema, mein Freund. Aber vermutlich bist du der erste dem das nicht gefallen hatte. Wenn wir den Song spielen, musst du mal auf unseren Freunde im Hintergrund achten, die da ein Riesenspektakel veranstalten. Kritik ist immer willkommen, ohne sie können wir nicht an uns arbeiten und uns verbessern. Soweit so gut, die Backgroundvocals in diesem Song sind lustig und das einzige was du danach machen kannst, ist darüber zu lachen. Eben, eine der Eigenschaften des Rock, also lach drüber..!
Gibt es eine Verbindung zwischen dem Artwork und dem Titel der CD?
Eine Menge Leute haben uns das in diesem Jahr häufig gefragt. Die Antwort musst du schon für dich selber finden, aber … du kannst auch falsch liegen.
Welches ist dein Favorit auf der CD?
Ich persönlich liebe „Teenager Desire“ sehr, das Lied erinnert mich an die Zeiten, welche leider nie zurückkommen werden. Es ist aber auch ein Lied, welches schwer zu spielen ist, da es eine bestimmten Sound braucht und gut zu klingen. Wenn ich es mir anhöre, bin ich aber sehr froh dass ich wir es aufgenommen haben.
Lass mich doch mal etwas über deine Einflüsse wissen.
Früher waren wir stark beeinflusst von vielen Street-Glamour und Hardrock-Bands wie Posion, Faster Pussycat, Kiss, Mötley Crüe, Slash´s Snakepit, AC/DC und so weiter, nicht zu vergessen, die Band Guns´n Roses, welche möglicherweise die besten Street-Rock´n Roller überhaupt waren. Aber mit der Zeit kamen dann auch neuere Bands hinzu wie etwa Brides of Destrcution, Black Label Society oder Velvet Revolver, die ja die moderneren Streetrocker sind.
Ich persönlich habe verschiedene Einflüsse, da wären der alte Rock´n Roll wie Kiss, AC/DC und für den Glam Poison und so. Aber meine Lieblinge sind immer Queen gewesen, ich meine dass niemand je wieder diesen musikalischen Level wie sie erreichen wird. Rikki liebt Rock und Glam, genauso wie ich, hinzu kommt das er ein „die Hard“-Fand von Morbid Angel ist und er hört auch viele andere Bands dieser Art. Er mag diese Art von Heavy Metal, aber nur wenn sie gut gespielt ist. Sexy Rake ist ein weniger ruhiger als wir, er hört gerne Toto und all diese Classic-Rockbands. DD Cat ist sehr offen und liebt alles von Mötley Crüe bis hin zu Cradle of Filth, von Europe bis Testament, er steht zu dem noch auf den modernen Kram aus dem norden von Europa. Mark Bluesman, ist wie sein Name schon sagt, seit Jahren dem Blues verfallen, aber er steht auch auf G`n R oder dem Snakepit.
Okay, das war sehr ausführlich, ich nenne dir mal ein paar Klassiker aus dem Sleaze´n Glamrock und gibt’s mir einen kurzen Kommentar zu jedem Album.
Poison: Open up and say ahh!: - Richtig gute Arbeit, sicher nicht so gut wie “Look what the cat dragged in”, doch in meinen Augen eines der besten Glamrock-Alben, die je aufgenommen wurden. Ich denke, eine bessere Produktion und ein schöneres Cover würden dem Album noch gut zur Gesicht stehen. Aber ich liebe es und höre die Scheibe noch sehr oft.
Mötley Crüe: Girls, Girls, Girls: - Es klingt powervoll und Kompakt. Tonnen von Energie direkt in dein Herz. Sicher hier gibt es 1 oder 2 schwäche Songs (ach ja?? Und welche?? Anmerk. J.), das ist aber kein Problem. Diese Scheibe ist ein Meisterwerk für mich, welche ich so oft während der ganzen Jahre gehört habe.
Hanoi Rocks: Oriental Beat: - Ich mag diese Band nicht so gerne. Ich bin aber der Meinung das Michael Monroe ein exzellenter Frontman ist. Die Band hat mich nie begeistern können. Die Platte ist schwach und hat nicht wirklich viel Energie.
Guns´n Roses: Lies: - Ich mag diese Scheibe sehr gerne. Nach dem kraftvollen Sturm welches das Debüt auslöste, gibt es hier auch die liebliche Seite der Gunners. Und auch die Energie der frühen Tage. Eine tolle Platte, mit vielen guten melodischen Songs. Die Band zeigt auch noch eine klasse Einstellung mit den Akustik-Liedern auf der anderen Seite.
Warrant: Cherry Pie:- Good album for a good Party! Nicht so wichtig für die Geschichte der Musikrichtung, aber es sind viele gute Ideen drauf, wenn man genauer hinhört. Das Cover finde ich furchtbar, aber der Sound ist bombig und die Songs gehen gut ins Ohr.
Ratt: Out of the Cellar: - Gute Platte, möglicherweise einer der stärksten Platten der 80ger. Es war die erste Glam-Scheibe und das die wichtig war, ist wohl logisch. Große Songs auf einem großen Album, leider von einer unglücklichen Band!
Magst du diese Bombast-Möchtegern-Metal-Bands wie Rhapsody, welche bei euch in Italien ja wie Pilze aus dem Boden schießen?
Das ist mir irgendwie Wurst. Ich mag Bands wie Rhapsody nicht so gerne. Ich meine zwar das der Sound dieser Bands irgendwie cool klingt, er ist aber nicht so heiß wie Rock´n Roll für mich. Ich bevorzuge dann andere italienische Musik, hmm, egal ich höre auch nicht so wirklich viel italienische Musik.
Was erwartet uns von einer Cathouse-Live-Show?
Tons of Energy!! Eine Menge unserer Songs und ein paar Coversongs von Street-Glam-Klassikern von früher, ab und an auch mal was neueres, so wie Velvet Revolver. Dazu noch 5 gut aussehende Typen, welche spielen wie die Hölle!
Die nächsten Schritte bei Cathouse wären?
Wir arbeiten ja gerade an neuen Liedern und wir suchen immer noch eine Vertriebsdeal und auch einen Plattenvertrag. Aber die harte Arbeit wird sich sicher auszahlen.

Cheeeeerz to you everybody!! We are CATHOUSE from Italy, and we are a street rock band that really loves our favourite music and that breathes the air of rock’n’roll!!! That’s me, as Gene Joint, on the bass guitar, Mark Bluesman on the lead guitar, DDCat on vocals, Rikki on the rhythm guitar and Sexy Rake on the drums
Was Cathouse your first pick for the band name?
Well, we had some names in our minds, but we decided to take CATHOUSE because is short and easier to remind. It’s also a little tribute to one of our first favourite bands (Faster Pussycat) when we started to play. Anyway, don’t you think that it is a good name??
Have you played in other bands before Cathouse?
All the band members played in other bands before starting to play in this band. I personally played in a couple of bands, and we did some famous mainstream song (with the first one), and after it I started to play in a grunge band, but it was too sad for me…So, I decided to come out, and I started to play with another band called Sexy Axes (!!!) but it was only a joke with some friends of mine, and during this period I was looking for a real band…and I found the CATHOUSE.
Why have you decided to play such cool Sleaze´n Glamrock and not some modern New-Metalstuff for a quick cash in?
Because when you feel the rhythm of rock’n’roll inside you, is something that you can’t explain. It just comes out, and all you have to do is take an instrument and let the music play. We really prefer Hard rock instead all the rest, because it comes directly from your heart. It’s a mix between heart, love, music, sweat, passion, sometimes pain… and good feelings. Do you know something in this world better than this??
Tell our readers about “In Pussy we trust” your CD.
We recorded it during Summer 2004, and it took 8 days for the recording session, the mixing session and the final modifications. In “IN PUSSY WE TRUST” you can find 5 song of pure street glam rock, directly from the eighties. It is not a demo, but an official product, recorded in a professional studio and with a real clear sound…this is not a low-cost product!! We spent a lot of money for recording it, but if you turn up your volume you won’t listen to the usual noisy rumours that you are used to hear in the classical demotapes.
“IN PUSSY WE TRUST” is a mix of our main influences, our ideas and all the things that made rock’n’roll the great music that you know. At the moment, people seems to like it very much, and we’re really proud for it!
Is that the first Cathouse-CD?
Yes, this is the first work for us. But at the moment we are working for new sounds and new songs for a future new cd. But we aren’t going to record it in a short time. We’re not in a hurry. Better things are made in long time….aren’t you agree?
You know I have criticized the backgrounds on the Song “Lesbian night”, let me know your thoughts about this critic, please.
Ahahaha!! No problem, my friend!!! But probably you’re the only one that don’t like them!
When we play live this song, you should listen to the noise that our friends and fan do during the chorus!!! Critics are always welcome anyway. Without critics, nobody can realize a better product. Anyway, the backgrounds vocal during that chorus are funny and the only thing that you can do after listening to them is laugh a lot!!! But this is also one of the senses of rock….so…smile, my friend!
Is there any connection between the cover and the CD-Title?
A lot of people did this question to us during this year. The answer is hidden into yourself…..but probably it’s wrong.
Which one is your favourite song on “In Pussy We Trust”?
I personally love very much “Teenager desire” because it remembers to me a time that won’t come back again. It’s also quite difficult to play well, and it needs real attentions for having the right sound. When I hear to it, I’m always really satisfied for having recorded it.
Tell me something about the influences from Cathouse!
In the early days, we were influenced by various street-glamour and hard-rock bands such Poison, Faster Pussycat, Kiss, Motley Crue, Slash’s Snakepit, Ac/Dc, and many others, and obviously by Guns’n’Roses, that are probably the best street rock band of all times. More recently we are looking for the new street rock of Velvet Revolver and Brides of Destruction, and Black Label Society.
Anyway, we have personally different influences: I like old rock’n’roll by Kiss, Ac/Dc and surely glam by Poison and so on; but my favourite band still remains Queen. I think nobody in the future will be at their same musical level. Rikki loves the old rock and glam like me, and is also a very “die-hard fan” of bands like Morbid Angel and others like this. He really like heavy metal, but only well-played. Sexy Rake is a bit quieter than us, and he listen to Toto and class-rock bands. DDCat is particular, and he loves everything, from Cradle of Filth to Motley Crue, from Europe to Testament. And he also looks for modern sounds from the north of Europe. Mark Bluesman felt in love many years ago with blues music (as you can understand from the name….), but only after being a great fan of G’n’R and Snakepit.
I will name you a few classic Glam/Sleaze-Records and I want some Comments from you about it.
Poison: Open Up and Say ahh! – Real good work, but not so much as “Look what the cat…”. Anyway, it’s one of the best glam albums ever recorded. I think it needed a stronger production and surely another kind of cover……. But I love it very much. It often runs on my stereo.
Mötley Crüe: Girls, Girls, Girls – It sound powerful and really compact. Tons of energy for your heart. I think that there are 2 song that are not so good, but it’s not a problem: this is absolutely a masterpiece for me. I listened to it many time during these years.
Hanoi Rocks: Oriental Beat – I don’t like very much this band. I think that Michael Monroe is an excellent frontman, but this band never caught me. This record is weak and it doesn’t have a lot of energy.
Guns´n Roses: Lies – I like this record very much. After the powerful storm of their first album, here I find the loveliest side of these guys. And also the energy of the early days on the other side. It’s a great record for me, there are good melodic song and I think that this band had a superb attitude for acoustic songs.
Warrant: Cherry Pie – Good album for a good party. Not so important for the history of this kind of music, but it’s a good idea to put an hear open wide on it. The cover is quite bad, but the sounds are good and many song are quite catchy.
Ratt: Out of the Cellar – Good record, probably one of the best records of the eighties. This was one of the firsts glam records, and this is an important thing to say. Great songs for a great album…for un unlucky band.
What do you think about the new Italian Metal-wave like Rhapsody and bombastic bands like these?
I have no idea…..I really don’t like bands like Rhapsody and so on. I think that the sound of this kind of bands is too cool for me, and not so hot as rock’n’roll music. I prefer other kinds of Italian music. Anyway…..I don’t listen to many Italian music.
What can we expect from a Cathouse Live-Show?
Tons of energy, a lot of our songs, and some street glam covers of old times and some others covers of the modern times, like Velvet Revolver. And also 5 good-looking guys that loves lo play loud and as well as they can….
The Next steps for Cathouse?
We’re working on new songs, and we’re looking for a distribution deal and maybe a production deal. The hard work will surely pay.
