Wieder einmal konnte ich mich blind auf den Tipp meiner Bekannten Denise verlassen. Die kleine Dame, steckte mir eines Tages mal etwas von der Band Elegantly Wasted und ich habe auf ihr Urteil vertraut und bin mit der Band in Kontakt getreten. Bandkopf Lenny J. hatte mir meine Interview-Fragen nett und ausführlich beantwortet. Ich dachte Anfangs, ich hätte es mit einer US-Band zu tun, was ja auch stimmt, den Elegantly Wasted haben ihren Sitz in Los Angeles. Allerdings ist Lenny in Schweden geboren und im Laufe des Interviews stellte sich raus, das wir einen gemeinsamen Bekannten haben. Wer das ist, findet ihr raus wenn ihr das Interview lest.

Review: Greetings from a strange place
Hi Lenny, stelle unseren Lesern deine Band Elegantly Wasted kurz vor.
Okay, in der Band bin ich an der Gitarre und sorge auch für den Gesang, und heiße Lenny J., Queen D. (aka Diana) ist an der 2ten Gitarre, Pauly am Schlagzeug und Olly bedient den Bass. Wir leben alle in Hollywood und spielen als Elegantly Wasted seit 2002 zusammen.
Ich habe auf euerer Homepage gelesen, das die Gitarristin aus der Schweiz stammt, wie kommt sie denn nach Hollywood?
Queen D. kam nach LA um Musik zu studieren und blieb dann aber hier um an ihrer Karriere zu arbeiten. Sie und ich haben die Band gegründet, wir haben den gleichen Musikgeschmack, verstehen uns prima und schreiben die Songs zusammen.
Dann kommen wir mal zu „Greetings from a strange place“, das Album ist zwar aus 2003, aber immer noch wert um drüber gesprochen zu werden.
Das Album vereinigt alle unsere Einflüsse, welche unseren Sound ausmachen. Das wäre eine Menge von 70 und 80ger Rock und ein klein wenig von den moderneren Sachen. Es wurde alles in einen Topf geworfen und frisch gemischt, für eine neue Ära an Rock´n Roll Domination!
Melodien und Harmonien bestimmen euren Sound aber Hauptsächlich, nicht wahr?
Attitüde ist auch noch sehr wichtig, das hörst du bei Songs wie „Better of Dead“ oder „Running Low“. Aber sicher, du hast Recht, es hat auch eine Menge an Melodien und großartigen Hooklines, damit die Leute abgehen und mitsingen können. Wir versuchen beides in die Songs zu packen.
„Paid my ticket“ ist ein Wahnsinnssong, habt ihr jemals daran gedacht ihn als Single herauszubringen?
Erst einmal, Danke, für das Kompliment. Für mich hat der Song eine besondere Bedeutung. Es geht darin wie wir auf der Strasse unterwegs sind um zu den Leuten gelangen, damit sie unsere Musik hören, wie wir dadurch neue Freunde finden und aufregende Erfahrungen machen. Wir haben einige Lieder auf eine CD gebrannt, um sie an das Label zu schicken und ich denke das wir bald wieder was Neues am Start haben werden. „Paid my Ticket“ würde sicher eine großartige Single abgeben, doch es ist immer schwer herauszufinden was die Leute mögen.
Es gibt auf der CD auch die T.Rex-Cover-Version, warum habt ihr da eine Gastsänger für genommen?
Es gibt hier in Hollywood einen Club, der sich Cat Club nennt, er gehört dem Drummer der Stray Cats. Jeden Dienstagabend spielt dort eine „All-Star-Cover-Band“. Es hat mal mit Traci Guns und Gilby Clarke an den Gitarren angefangen, dann noch Slim Jim Phantom am Schlagzeug (Stray Cats) und der Bassist von Dee Dee Ramone Stefan Adika. Dazu kamen dann immer noch berühmte Gäste wie Slash oder Axel Rose, Brian May von Queen, Lemmy oder Jerry Cantrell von Alice in Chains, und so weiter.
Ich hang dort oft rum und als ich die Leute etwas besser kannte, jamte ich ein paar Mal mit. Bryan Roxie übernahm also immer den Gesang von „20th Century Boy“ und ich half ihm dabei immer, so habe ich ihn gefragt ob er das nicht auch auf unsere Platte machen wolle. Das ist übrigens schon 3 Jahre her.
Um ehrlich zu sein, kann ich Bryan Roxie nicht wirklich einordnen, wo spielt er sonst noch?
Er ist der Lead-Gitarrist der Alice Cooper-Band, das schon seit 6 oder 7 Jahren. Du kannst ihn auch auf der „Brutal Planet“-Live-DVD sehen.
Ah ja jetzt klingelt es. Würdest du eure Musik als Sleazerock bezeichnen?
Ich nenne es „New School Rock´n Roll“, aber wir haben definitiv eine Menge Einfluss vom Sleazerock, besonders Guns´n Roses.
Ihr habt ein paar Gigs in Deutschland und der Schweiz vor ein paar Wochen gespielt, erzähl doch mal, was da so abging.
Es war klasse, wir haben in der Schweiz schon im letzten Jahr gespielt und es ist immer toll dort zu spielen. Die Leute dort sind sehr offen für unseren Kram. Aber als wir dann das erste Mal nach Deutschland kamen hat es uns geradezu umgehauen. Wir haben in Berlin gespielt, welches wirklich eine verrückte Stadt ist. Dann waren wir ja noch im „Paunchy Cats“ in Lichtenfels (Bayern), der Club ist echt cool. Der Typ, der die Platten dort auflegt hat uns gebookt und er ist ein echt cooler Typ, der völlig auf den LA-Musik-Style abfährt. Wir hatten mit DJ HiJinxx eine Hammerparty, er hat Wahnsinns-Scheiben gespielt. Nur den guten Rock´n Roll-Stuff!!
Ich weis dass du Hot Rod von Gemini 5 ganz gut kennst. Wie habt ihr euch kennen gelernt?
Nun, wir haben uns, in unser beiden Heimatstadt Gothenburg (Schweden) vor etlichen Jahren kennen gelernt (Lenny ist gebürtig Schwede- Anmerk J.), wir haben dort bei einem Konzert abgehangen. Wir müssen so 14 oder 15 Jahre alt gewesen sein. Seitdem haben wir immer zusammen gehockt, bis ich eben nach Hollywood gegangen bin. Wir sind beide völlig verrückt auf Mötley Crüe, deren Musik und das Image, haben uns quasi zusammen gebracht. Wir haben eine kleine Hollywood-Clique in Gothenburg gehabt, das waren alles befreundete Leute. Da waren ein paar von den Hardcore Superstars, dann die Velvet 69 und dann noch ein paar Leute die nun in Bands wie Supergroupies oder The Awesome Machine spielen. Ja, wir hatten schon ein paar echt coole Rocker in unserer Heimatstadt.
Wann wird es eine neue Elegantly Wasted-CD geben?
Ich hoffe, das es im laufe des nächsten Jahres soweit sein wird. Wir haben einen Haufen neuer Songs geschrieben und werden bald damit beginnen die Demos davon aufzunehmen. So das wir bald das neue Album aufnehmen können.
Was bedeutet eigentlich Elegantly Wasted?
Da gibt es 2 Bedeutungen. Was es wörtlich übersetzt bedeutet ist, das man seine Zeit sinnvoll verbringen, und sie nicht mit unnützen Dingen verplempern soll. Die andere Bedeutung, welche von den Leuten meist benutzt wird ist, sich zu betrinken und dabei noch richtig gut auszusehen. Das ist auch, das was wir am meisten machen hahaha!
Hast du noch in anderen Bands vor Elegantly Wasted gespielt?
In Schweden, war ich in vielen Bands. Da gab es „Boulevard“ und „The Ungrateful“, beide haben Alben in Schweden veröffentlicht. Im Moment bin ich mit einem Freund ein paar Session am aufnehmen. Für ein Side-Projekt welches sich „Damn Hippie Freaks“ nennt.

Was war dein Antrieb um Musiker zu werden?
Ich möchte dass sich die Leute gut fühlen und ihre Probleme bei meiner Musik vergessen können. Aber auch das sie wissen, das sie mit ihren Problemen nicht alleine sind, das verarbeite ich in meiner Musik. Jeder hat Probleme und braucht die Musik um vor ihnen für eine gewisse Zeit zu fliehen, sie hilft dir wenn du dich schlecht fühlst.
Meinst du Sleazerock oder nennen wir es Rock´n Roll kann noch mal so groß werden wie in den 80ger?
Elegantly Wasted sind da, damit es so wird.
Wann kommt ihr für Konzerte nach Europa zurück?
Wir hoffen auf eine weitere Tour im nächsten Sommer.
Welches war der furchtbarste Moment in deiner Karriere?
Als ich meine Gibson Les Paul Custom Sliverburst verkaufen musste, damit ich meine Rechnungen bezahlen konnte. Das war echt Scheiße und ich vermisse diese Gitarre.
Gibt es irgendwas was du im Musikzirkus vermisst?
Mehr Leute die aufrichtig daran interessiert sind gute Musik zu unterstützen und das nicht wegen des Geldes mache. So wie es eben die meisten im Business machen.
Was kommt als nächste bei Elegantly Wasted?
Mehr neue Songs schreiben, diese Aufnehmen, touren und die Welt erobern!

First of all introduce the band to our readers.
The band is myself, Lenny J. on vocals and guitar, Queen D. (AKA Diana) on guitar, Pauly on drums and Olly on Bass. We live in Hollywood, California and have been playing as Elegantly Wasted since early 2002.
I have seen on your homepage that your guitar player is from Switzerland?
Queen D. came to Los Angeles to study music and stayed here to pursue her career. Her and I started the band together cause we had the same kind of musical taste and had a good time writing music together.
Let us talk about “Greetings from a strange place”, sure it is from 2003 but still worth to talk about it. Describe the Album from your point of View.
The album basically puts together all our influences and makes up our sound, which is a lot of 70’s and 80’s rock with a bit of modern rock mixed in to make it fresh and updated for the new era of rock and roll domination!!
I think that the main-aim of your music are melodies and harmony-lines?
Attitude is very important, with songs like “Better Off dead” and “Running Low” but yes, there has to be melody and great hooks so people can sing along and get into the music. So we try to get booth into our songs.
“Paid my ticket” is a hell of a song, have you ever wasted some thoughts to release it as single?
First off, thanks for that comment! For me that song has some real meaning cause it’s about the road we are traveling, playing music, always meeting new people and having new experiences. There is a couple of songs we are currently put on a disc to give to record labels and I think that will be one of them, along with a few new ones. I think it would make a great single, but it’s always hard to know which songs people are gonna like.
You have a cover version of a T REX-Classic on the Album, why you have chosen a guest singer for that?
There is a club in Hollywood called the Cat Club, which is owned by the Drummer of the Stray cats, and every Thursday night there is an All-star cover band playing there. It started out with Tracii Guns from L.A. Guns and Gilby Clarke from Guns and Roses on Guitar, Slim Jim Phantom from The Stray Cats on drums and Stefan Adika from Dee Dee Ramones band on bass. There would always be famous guests coming in to play like Axl Rose or Slash, Brian May from Queen, Lemmy from Motorhead, Jerry Cantrell from Alice in Chains and so on…..
So I hang out there all the time and jammed a few times after I got to know some guys a bit. Ryan Roxie took over on vocals after about 3 years and I used to help out on vocals sometime on “20th century Boy” So I asked him to help us with some vocals on our record.
Sorry but I have no clue about him, who is Ryan Roxie? who did that song.
He is the lead guitar player for Alice Cooper and have been for the last six or seven years. You can see him on the Alice Cooper “Brutal Planet” live DVD too.
Would you call your music Sleazerock?
I call it “New School Rock and Roll” but we absolutely have a lot of influence from Sleaze, mainly from bands like Guns and Roses.
You have played a few gigs in Germany and Switzerland the last weeks, tell me your impressions from the concerts, please.
It was a great tour! We toured in Switzerland last year and playing there is always cool, the people are really responsive to our stuff there, but this time we went to Germany for the first time and we had a blast! We played in Berlin, which is a crazy city! We also played at a place called “Paunchy Cats” in Lichtenfels, Bayern which was really cool. The guy that spins at the club booked us and he’s a really cool guy and totally into the L.A. style rock so we had a real party. His name is DJ HiJinxx and he only spins the best rock and roll stuff!!
You know Hot Rod from Gemini5, tell me something about the connection between you and him.
Well, we met in our hometown of Gothenburg, Sweden at a Metal show when we were like 14 or 15 years old, and used to hang out all the time until I moved to Hollywood. We basically were both crazy about Motley Crue and that music and image is what brought us together. We used to have our own little Hollywood crowd back in Gothenburg together with a bunch of friends like the guys from “Hardcore Superstar” a band called “Velvet 69”, and some other people that now play in other bands like “Supergroupies” and “The Awesome Machine”
We have a few good rockers from our hometown you know!
When we will have a new Elegantly Wasted-Album in our hands?
Hopefully sometime next year, we have a bunch of new songs written and are starting to demo them real soon, so hopefully we can record a new album soon.
What means the name Elegantly Wasted for you?
There are two meanings to the name, what it really means is to spend your time wisely and not waste it on stupid things that are not important. The second meaning (which most people think of first) is to get drunk enough but still be looking really good! (which we do, haha)
Have you played in other bands before EW or are you still involved in others side-projects?
In Sweden I was in a few bands. The bands “Boulevard” and “The Ungrateful” both had albums out in Sweden. Right now I do some recording sessions and play for one of my friends band called “Damn Hippie Freaks” as a side project.

What is your personal aim to play music?
To make people feel good and forget about their problems when they listen to our music. Also to understand they are not alone having trouble in life, everyone does and that’s why music is a great escape and help when you feel bad.

We hope to tour again next summer.
Worst moment in your career, so far?
Having to sell my Gibson Les Paul Custom Silverburst to pay bills, that really sucked and I miss that guitar!!
Is there something that you miss in this business?
More people that are truly interested and supportive of real music and not just interested in money like most people in the music business.

Write more songs, record, tour and conquer the world!!
