Diese Band hat den ehemaligen Circus of Power-Sänger Alex Mitchell, in ihren Reihen und Fat Nancy sind einfach ein Muss für jeden Fan von Sleaze und erdigem Hardrock.

Erst einmal Gratulation zur wirklich tollen CD „Pure American muscle,baby“. Du bist doch sicher auch damit zufrieden?
Yeah, ich liebe die CD und höre sie, seit dem ich sie habe, sehr häufig. Stell dir mal vor, die Basic-Tracks haben wir in gerade mal 5 Stunden aufgenommen. Der Gesang hat 2 Tage gebraucht, dann noch 2 weitere Tage für den Mix und fertig. Das ganze Album hat uns gerade mal 600 Dollar gekostet, ist doch unglaublich.
Das ist es in der Tat. Wann wurden Fat Nancy gegründet?
Die Band Fat Nancy haben wir vor anderthalb Jahren ins Leben gerufen. Wir haben zwar einige Wechsel gehabt, aber nun ist das Line-Up stabil.
Alle Songs auf dem Album sind aber bisher unveröffentlicht, oder?
Ja, alle Songs sind Neu und wir haben schon wieder einen ganzen Haufen brandneuer Songs fertig, die darauf warten aufgenommen zu werden.
Eine Sache habe ich aber zu kritisieren und das wäre das Cover. Es sieht nun wirklich nicht toll aus. Egal ob das rote oder das mit der Büchse drauf, wie siehst du das?
Da gebe ich dir vollkommen Recht, das Cover ist lahm. Ich bin auch nicht so glücklich mit dem Bild. Aber es gibt schon so viele Alben mit langweiligen Covern, welche absolut geile Musik enthalten. Und nur das zählt!!
Ihr seit nun bei PerrisRecords gelandet, hattet ihr nur das eine Angebot?
Nein, es gab keine anderen Angebote. Perris ist eine gute Lösung. Tom ist ein toller Typ und er mag uns und steht hinter der Musik. Durch Mundpropaganda wird sich die CD sicher machen.
Auf eurer Homepage sucht ihr nach „Russ Meyer“-Typischen Girls, für ein Videodreh. So was macht mich neugierig, worum wird es gehen?
Wir wollen einen Video-Clip zu dem Song „Hot Lottie“ drehen und wir werden die Story des Liedes umsetzen.
Sind Fat Nancy nun eine Band oder eher ein Projekt für dich?
Wir sind eine echte Band; alles andere was ich mache ist sozusagen ein Solo-Projekt.
Warum hast du dir die Haare abgeschnitten?
Meine Haare wurden immer lichter und so habe ich sie komplett abgeschnitten. Zum Glück habe ich einen cool aussehenden Kopf.
Ich mag sehr den souligen Touch in deinem Gesang, das ist doch sicher ein großer Einfluss?
Soul ist alle für mich. Es sagt einfach alles über dich aus. Wo du herkommst. Viele gute Rock-Sachen sind soulig, die schlechten dann eher nicht. Soweit es Soul-Music angeht, das höre ich schon seit dem ich ein Kind bin. Chi-lities, Sly &the Family Stone, Otis Reding, al Green, James Brown, The Spinners und so weiter und sofort. American Soul ist das Beste!
Eines meiner Faves auf dem Album ist das “Doors”- beeinflusste „Secret Love“. Ich habe in meinem Review geschrieben, das du in dem Song sehr wie Jim Morrison klingst. Haben dich „The Doors“ auch beeinflusst?
Ich liebe The Doors. Liebe auch Jim. Sein Poetischer Stil ist einfach toll. Secret Love? Haben wir da nicht alle eine?
Wer sind denn die „Children of the Midnight Sun“?
Es sind alle coolen Leute, die Ausgestoßenen der Gesellschaft, die Misshandelten, Gedemütigten, alle die irgendwie gequält wurden. Meine Freunde, Meine Familie, Meine Liebe.
Du hast gerade ein Buch herausgebracht, erzähl mal was davon.
Das Buch gibt es über unsere Webseite und auch bald bei amazone.com. Ich hoffe die Leute mögen es. Kleine, verrückte Kurzgeschichten. Es heißt „Life is a phantom kmart horse smarting up in the middle of the night“.
Dann gibt es da noch diese andere CD, aus dem Jahre 2003. Was hat es mit „Plastic Gator Machine“ auf sich?
„Platic Gator Machine“ wird Ende Oktober/Anfang November wieder über CD-Baby erhältlich sein. Ich mag diese CD, es ist zwar mehr Country drauf und ein paar „Spoken Words“-Sachen. Ich habe sie mit Charlie Pickett aus Florida aufgenommen. Ich mache sogar noch eine 2te CD mit ihm, gleich nächste Woche (Zum Interviewzeitpunkt –Anmerk. J.) und sie wird dann auch bald erscheinen. Jesus, das klingt jetzt, als wenn ich im Moment echt viel mache. Ich glaube ich reiße mir zurzeit den Arsch mehr auf als jeder andere.
Was bedeutet Rock´n Roll heute für dich?
Rock bedeutet mir das Gleiche wie immer. Ich bin ein Rocker, Mann, ein Rocker fürs Leben. Ein Außenseiter, der normalen Gesellschaft. Aber mit Rockmusik fühle ich mich gut.
Du warst ja vor Jahren der Sänger von Circus of Power. Gibt es irgendwas, das du aus der Zeit vermisst?
Ich vermisse es, wie ich damals einen Kater wegstecken konnte. Und verdammt, irgendwie vermisse ich es, wie es war jung und dumm zu sein. Aber wenn du in der Vergangenheit lebst ist es der falsche Weg.
Was war denn der größte Erfolg aus deiner Sicht?
Da gibt es nur einen großen Erfolg und zwar den, eine bessere Mensch geworden zu sein.

Kannst du uns irgendeine Anekdote aus deiner Circus of Power-Zeit zum Besten geben?
Als wir unseren ersten Plattenvertrag unterschrieben, feierten wir in der Lismar Lounge in New York City. Wir waren so was von betrunken und hatten den Spaß unseres Lebens.
Wäre eine Reunion mit Circus of Power für dich möglich?
Reunion? Möglich schon, aber wer braucht die? Wer weiß…
Wird es bald die Möglichkeit geben Fat Nancy auch auf den europäischen Bühnen zu beklatschen?
Fat Nancy brennen darauf in Europa zu spielen. Wir wären sofort unterwegs. Ich hoffe auf so eine coole Möglichkeit. Aber wird brauchen noch etwas, da gibt es so viele Bands mit denen wir was machen könnten. Kennst du Turbonegro? The Darkness? Queens of the Stone age?

Congrats to the CD „Pure american muscle, baby“, it is a great piece of music. Are you satisfied with the result?
A: Yeah, I love the c.d., listen to it a lot, even though it’s my band. Dig this-the basic tracks were done in 5 hours, the vocals in two days, the mix in two days-all in all about six hundred dollars. Unbelievable
When was Fat Nancy formed?
A: fat nancy was formed about a year and a half ago. We went through some transformations but now the line-up seems stable.
Are all songs new (or unreleased) on the Album?
A:yes, all the songs are new, and we have a lot of brand new ones for the next recording also.
One thing I have to criticise, i´m not so happy with the Cover of the CD. Why you choose such a simple artwork? Or is the Cover with the Can, the real one?
I agree, lame cover. We had zero time to get it together cause perris wanted to release it quickly plus we (the band) couldn’t agree on a cover. There are a lot of lame album covers that have amazing music inside of them, that’s what counts!
You got the Record-Deal with Perrisrecords, have you had some others offers?
No other offers, perris is a good place to be right now, tom is a good guy and is getting our music out there. I think word of mouth will help on this c.d.
On your homepage you call for “Russ Meyer”-Type Girls for a video. Tell me something about the Video? How your ideas look like?
shooting a video for ‘hot lottie’ next week, it will be funny and will follow the storyline of the song.
Is Fat Nancy a band or just a Project for you?
this is a real band for me;everything else I do is a side project.
When you have cutted your hair?
my hair was disappearing so I made it disappear all the way! Luckily I have a cool looking head!
I really love the Soul touch in your voice; this music must be a big influence for you?
soul to me is everything;it says everything about you, where you’re coming from. Most good rock is soulful, most bad rock is not. As far as soul music goes, I’ve been into it since I was a kid. Chi-lites, sly and the family stone, otis redding,al green, james brown, the spinners, it goes on and on. American soul, man. It’s the best.
My favourite Songs on the Album are “American Monster” and the Doors-Like “Secret Love”, I wrote that you sound a bit like Jim Morrisson in that song. Are the Doors any influences for you?
love the doors. Love jim. Love his poetic style. Secret love? We all have one.
Who are the “Children of the Midnight sun”?
the children of the midnite sun are all the cool people, and all the underdogs. the abused, the mentally challenged, the physically challenged. My friends, my family, my loves.
You have released a book now; please tell me something about it.

There is another CD from you around, released in 2003, gave me a look at “Plastic gator machine”?
plastic gator machine will be available on c.d.baby at the end of October/early November. Like that c.d. too, has more country style struff on there, some spoken word, recorded some stuff with Charlie pickett from florida. Doing a second c.d. next week with him, will release it soon. Christ, it sounds like I’m doing a lot of stuff, but I pick my ass just as much as anyone else I think. Maybe more.
What means Rock´n Roll for you today?
rock means the same as it always did, I’m a rocker, dude, rocker for life.i’m an outsider to the normaloids of society. But rock music, it makes me feel so good.
You was the singer of Circus of Power for many years, is there something you miss from this time?
I miss being able to handle a hangover! And hell, I miss being young and stupid. But it’s a mistake to live in the past; it can be a curse.
What was your greatest success so far?
the one single greatest success of mine is becoming a better person.

hanging at the lismar lounge in nyc the night we got signed. I was drunk and happy.
Is a Reunion of Circus of Power possible for you?
reunion? sure, but who the fuck knows…
Any chance to see Fat Nancy on European stages, soon?
fat nancy is dying to play Europe. We’re just getting on our way, I hope, to doing cool things like that. But we need a few more breaks, like some cool band to have us open up for them. Are you listening, turbo negro? The darkness? Queens of the stone age?
