Mögen lieber Sex, Alkohol und Metal !!
Ja ja, diese Finnen….und schon wieder hat sich ein Combo in mein Herz gespielt. „Dreamtale“ spielen ähnliche Musik wie „Twilightning“ oder „Ghost Machinery“ also ein perfektes Misch-Masch zwischen harten Rock Songs und schnellen Power Nummern. Ich habe mich mit dem sehr sympathischen Sänger von „Dreamtale“ „Jarkko“ über ihren neuen Longplayer „Difference“ unterhalten.

Hey Jarkko, “Difference” ist wirklich eine coole Scheibe, die hat bei mir gleich gezündet. Wie bist du selber mit dem Resultat zufrieden?
Danke Vince. Ich bin sehr zufrieden damit. Ich hätte ein paar Stimmeinlagen besser machen sollen, aber irgendwo musst du einfach eine Linie ziehen, weißt du. Und natürlich gab’s ein Terminplan einzuhalten.
Was sind deiner Meinung nach die Unterschiede zwischen dem letzten Album „Ocean’s Heart“ und dem neuen Silberling „Difference?
Nun, erstens bin ich nicht der Sänger in “Ocean’s Heart”. Meine Stimme klingt sehr anders verglichen zu Tomi Viiltola’s Sound. Und zweitens, „Ocean’s Heart“ ist ein Themenalbum mit einem roten Faden. Der Unterschied ist eine Sammlung von Songs von verschiedenen Typen. Du bekommst Lieder von Rami, Pasi und mir zu hören. Wir brauchten auch eine Menge Songwriter darauf.
Noch ein Unterschied ist, dass es kein Power Metal mehr war wie beim letzten Album.
Allgemein bin ich sehr von den Melodien von „Difference“ begeistert, wie schafft ihr es so innovative Chöre zu schreiben, ohne das der Langeweile Euro Metal Faktor einsetzt wie z.B. Bei Stratovarius?
Es muss etwas zu tun haben mit der Persönlichkeit von unseren Spielern und Schreibern. Ich glaube, alles was wir mit den Chören oder Gitarren etc gemacht haben, haben wir aus einer Intuition heraus gemacht. Zum Schluss ist der wesentliche Faktor das Lied selbst. Wenn es genug Persönlichkeit hat, die Chöre und all die anderen Arrangements werden noch interessanter. Glaubst du nicht?
Doch, du hast natürlich absolut recht. Kannst du mir eine Band-Histoy in Kurzform abliefern, so das die Leser die euch nicht kennen ein Bild von „Dreamtale“ bekommen?
Das solltest du jemanden anders fragen, weil ich bin der Neuste da. Aber kurz gesagt ging es etwa so vor sich:
Rami begann eine Band zu suchen, die Power Metal spielen wollte, größtenteils von ihm geschrieben und gesungen. Nach vielen Kandidaten und einigen Demos wurde die Band gegründet. Japanische Hörer waren völlig außer sich als sie die Dreamtale Demo-CD hörten und irgendein Label-Typ kontaktierte unsere finnische Plattenfirma, Spinefarm. Bald danach nahm die Band ihr erstes Album „Beyond Reality“ auf, nachdem die Scheibe veröffentlicht wurde kam Pasi Ristolainen als Bassspieler zur Band. Ich weiß nicht wieso dies passiert ist. Auf jeden Fall, Pasi war der Band schon bekannt, denn er hat das Album aufgenommen!
Als die Aufnahmen fürs nächste Album kurz bevorstanden hatte Rami klargestellt, dass er sich voll aufs Gitarrespielen konzentrieren möchte. An dieser Stelle kam Tomi Viiltola dazu, „oceans Heart“ zu singen. Ich weiß nicht was passiert ist, aber Tomi war nicht allzu lange dabei und Dreamtale musste einen neuen Sänger suchen. Die Jungs kontaktierten mich nachdem sie, glaub ich, meine Demos gehört haben. Sie fragten mich ob ich nicht mit ihnen ein paar Songs spielen könnte. Ich zweifelte, wieso auch immer, weil ich nicht so sehr der Power Metaller war (und ich bin es auch heute noch nicht so. nachdem ich kurze Bedenkzeit hatte, entschloss ich mich, zu gehen. Und.. nun sind wir hier. Esa Orjatsalo verließ die Band vor einigen Monaten, nun wurde er ersetzt durch Mikko Mattila. Die Geschichte geht weiter…
Danke schön Jarkko für diese kurze Zusammenfassung. Wie sieht es mit einer Tour aus, ich denke mit dem neuen Album im Gepäck sollte eine Support Act Tour mit einer bekannten Band nur eine Frage der Zeit sein?
Diese Dinge verlangen Zeit und Geld. Und wir haben beides davon nicht.
Das selbe gilt auch für mich. Ihr kommt ja aus dem schöner aber kalten Finnland, wenn ich mir so die letzten geilen Platten anschaue, die erschienen sind, muss ich feststellen das viele aus eurem Lande kommen. Kannst du mir etwas über die Metal Szene in Finnland berichten, Jarkko?
Natürlich. Metal ist hier schon seit mehr als 20 Jahren der Stil schlechthin. Selbstverständlich haben und die großen Trends auch besucht, aber aus irgendeinem Grund sind finnische Musikhörer sehr loyal. Im Moment haben wir eine Metal Renaussance am laufen. Speziell finnischer Metal ist sehr hip, und ich habe auch meinen Teil des Kuchens genommen (aber das ist eine andere Geschichte).
Wir Finnen sind Heavy Metal Leute!!!
Kommen wir auf deine Einflüsse zu sprechen, welche Bands haben deinen Werdegang beeinflusst?
Meine Einflüsse beruhen strikte auf alter Rock Musik. Bands wie Deep Purple (v.a. die Burn-Ära, kann mich nicht erinnern welcher Mark es war.. ich denke der 3.?), Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Dio und Manowar sind meine ständigen Favoriten. Aber: ich mag eigentlich jeden Stil von Musik. Der Punkt ist, dass die Musik, die ich höre, mich irgendwo bewegen muss. Musik ohne Gefühl oder Bedeutung ist langweilig.
Auf „Difference“ findet man schnelle Songs wie „Wings of Icoros“ aber auch Melodic Hymnen wie „New Life“! Die Mischung macht für mich das Album unter anderem zu einem Knüller. Was meinst du zu meiner Aussage?
Ja, du hast Recht. Bands sollten viel mehr verschiedenes Zeug auf ihrem Album spielen und ich denke, „Difference“ ist ein ziemlich guter Mix aus verschiedenen Dingen.
Jarkko, du hast sicherlich eine lustige Tour oder Band Geschichte auf Lager welche die Leser unbedingt wissen sollten oder?
Tut mir Leid, Vince. Meine Beziehung zur Band ist sehr professional. Damit meine ich, dass ich die Jungs meistens dann treffe, wenn wir etwas zu tun haben. Natürlich ist das, was wir Backstage miteinander sprechen nicht von Bedeutung – aber ich bin noch nicht lange genug bei Dreamtale, sodass ich mich hinsetzen könnte und mich an gute Stories erinnern könnte. Ich glaube, die anderen hätten etwas zu erzählen, aber ich bin nur der Sänger, ha.
Schade, aber ich verstehe das natürlich. Was geht dir bei den folgenden Begriffen durch den Kopf:
Suomi = kaltes Land – gute Leute
TNT = ein gutes Stück Rock von AC/DC
80’s Sunset Strip = Um… Nichts.
HIM = nette, finnische Band die sich im Ausland sehr gut verkauft – ich mag ihre Musik trotzdem nicht.
Poison = Alice Cooper's cool Pop/rock-song und eine langweilige Band der 80er
Switzerland = Neutralitätspolitik, schweizer Uhren und die Taschenmesser!
Jesus Christ = die bekannteste Person in der westl. Welt, denk ich.
Tour Life = anstrengend, langweilig, aufregend, beanspruchend, Spaß… Komplex!
Groupies = Wer?
Black Metal = langweilig.
Lita Ford = Cool.
The Osbournes = zu Beginn war es lustig, aber ich glaube die Osbournes und die Zuschauer hatten genug davon.
Sleaze-Metal.com ist ja eine Seite die der ehemaligen Sleaze und Glam Szene Tribute zollt mit Interviews und Reviews etc, was denkst du eigentlich über die 80er Sex, Drugs and Mötley Crüe roll Zeit?
Ich dachte die sex'n'drugs'n'rock'n'roll Äre war in den 60ern? Vielleicht in den 70ern?.. es scheint als sei diese Zeit immer hier. Auch heute. Für mich repräsentieren die 80er den neuen Aufstieg und den Fall des Heavy Metals. Motley Crue- ähnliche Musik ist sehr grundlegender Rock, aber ich mag ihre Songs nicht (obwohl ich den grundlegenden Rock mag). Ich denke, ich mag Sex, Alkohol und Metal besser!
Unsere Leser kommen nebst Deutschland, der Schweiz, USA etc auch aus Japan – Dort ist die Musik die ihr spielt ja ziemlich gefragt, „Twilightning“ tourten vor einiger Zeit erfolgreich mit Helloween durch das Land der aufgehenden Sonne. Würde euch das euch reizen?
Ich wollte schon immer mal nach Japan. Und übrigens ist Twilighting eine großartige Band

Sie sind immer noch offen für einige Sachen. Aber die Dinge werden bald entschieden.

Kannst du mir Einbisschen was über die Lyrics vom neuen Album erzählen, wie kommt ihr in der Regel auf solche Texte?
Es ist wie einen Song zu komponieren. Du kommst mit einer Idee an, welche du gut und interessant findest, und dann beginnst du diese auszuarbeiten. Ich für mich mag es, Reime zu machen, hier und da. Nun, es dauert natürlich ein Weilchen, bis diese fertig sind. Gelegentlich ist es nicht wichtig, aber meistens, denk ich, dass sie dadurch besser zum singen und hören werden. Ich spreche dabei nur für mich, ist klar. Es gibt viele Texte auf diesem Album, mit denen ich nix zu tun hatte. Ich bin sehr zufrieden mit dem Text und der Komposition von „Sail Away“.
Auch musikalisch gesehen muss ich euch ein dickes Lob aussprechen, wie lange machst du persönlich schon Musik?
Danke. Ich begann mit 13 Jahren Drums zu spielen. Danach wollte ich Gitarre lernen, aber ich wurde irgendwie gezwungen zu singen, weil es sich niemand sonst getraut hat. Singen ist mental gesehen viel fordernder als das Spielen, muss ich zugeben. Auf jeden Fall mach ich nun seit 14 Jahren Musik und es geht weiter. Und noch immer gibt es so viele Dinge, von denen ich keine Ahnung habe.
Nenne mich fünf Gründe um „Difference“ zu kaufen (ich könnte mehr als 10 nennen)
1. es ist großartig!
2. es ist vielseitig
3. es bietet etwas für die alten Fans und etwas für die Neuen.
4. wir kriegen etwas Geld, wenn ihr du sie kaufst (aber nur ein bisschen, traurigerweise…)
5. du wirst den Unterschied hören!
6. Hör dir die nächsten 5 Gründe von Vince an!

Thanks, Vince. I'm pretty satified with it. I should have done few vocal parts better, but you have to draw the line somewhere, you know. And of course there was a schedule to follow.
Where is in your opinion the difference between this and the last album?
Well, first of all, I am not the singer in "Ocean's Heart". My vocals sound very different compared to Tomi Viiltola's sound. And second, Ocean's Heart is a theme album with a story line. Difference is a collection of different songs from different guys. You'll get to hear songs from Rami, Pasi and myself. We also used many lyric-writers on this one.
Difference is not that much power metal as the former album.
Generally, i’m very exited about the melodies of „difference“, how can you write innovative choirs without coming up the boring euro metal factor, like stratovarius?
This must have got something to do with the personalities of our players and writers. I believe, that what ever we did with the choirs or guitars etc, we did it pretty much with our intution. In the end, the main factor is the song itself. If it has enough personality, the choirs and all the other arrangements will be more interesting. Don't you think?
Could you briefly tell me the band history so that the reader who doesn’t know you can figure a picture of “dreamtale”?
You should ask this from someone else, 'cause I am the of the newest dudes around. But briefly it went about like this:
Rami started to collect a band that would play power metal songs, mostly written and sung by him. After pretty many player canditates and few demos, the band was stable. Japanese listeners got enthusiastic from Dreamtale's demo-cd and some label-guy contacted our Finnish record company, Spinefarm. Soon after this, the band was signed in and ready to record the debyt album "Beyond Reality". After the album was released, Pasi Ristolainen joined in as a bass player. I don't know why this happened. Anyway, Pasi was already known by the band, because he recorded the album!
Before the recordings of next album were about to start, Rami stated, that he wanted to concentrate fully into guitar playing. This is where Tomi Viiltola came in to do the vocals for "Ocean's Heart". I don't know what happened or anything, but Tomi didn't stick around too long and Dreamtale was again looking for a singer. So, guys contacted me after hearing, I guess, some of my demos. They asked if I could come in and play few songs with them. I was in doubt, however, because I'm wasn't into power metal that much (and I'm still not into power metal that much). After giving it a tought, I desided to go. And...here we are. Esa Orjatsalo left the band few months ago and he is now replaced by Mikko Mattila. The story continues...
How about a tour? I think with the new album there shouldn’t be any problems being a support act for a famous band?
These things ask for money and time. At this point, there seems to be a lack of both.
You come from the beautiful but cold finland. If I listen to the latest cool released records, I have to remark that a lot of them come from your country. Can you tell me a bit about your metal scene in finland, jarkko?
Sure. Metal music has been one of the major music styles here for about twenty years, more or less. Of course all the biggest trends have visited us too, but for a reason or another finnish music listeners are very faithful. At the moment we have a metal music renaissance going on, big time. Especially finnish metal music is very hip, and I'm also having my spoon on this soup (but that's another story).
We finnish people are Heavy Metal -people!
Let’s talk about your influences.. which bands did you move to your development?
My influences are strictly in old heavy rock music. Bands like Deep Purple (especially the Burn -era, can't remember what Mark it was, though...III?), Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Dio and Manowar are my all time favorites. But: I also like almost any kind of music. The whole point is, that the music I listen must move me somehow. Music without feel or meaning is boring.
On „difference“ there are several faster songs like „wings of icaros“ or also melodic hymns like „new life“. This mixture makes it among other things to a scoop. What do you say to my declaration.
Yes, you're right. Bands should play more different stuff on their albums and I think "Difference" is a pretty good mixture of different portions.
Jarkko, surely you got a funny tour- or bandstory in stock which our reader should know, haven’t you?
Sorry, Vince. My relationship with this band is very professional. With this I mean, that I meet the guys mostly when we have something to do. Of course the stuff we talk in the backstage is not printable here - but I haven't been hanging around with Dreamtale long enough, so that I could sit down and start memorizing good stories. I believe the other guys would have something to tell! I am just a singer, ha.
What does cross your mind when you see the following expressions?
Suomi = Cold land - good people.
TNT = A great piece of rock from AC/DC.

Sleaze-metal.com is actually a homepage tributing the former sleaze and glam scene with interviews and reviews etc, what do you think about the 80s’ sex, drugs and motley crüe-roll time?
I thought the sex'n'drugs'n'rock'n'roll -era was in the 60's and maybe 70's? ...It seems that it's always there, even nowadays. To me 80's represent the new rise and the fall of heavy metal. Motley Crue kind of music is pretty basic rock stuff but I don't like their songs (even though I like the basic rock). I guess I find sex, alcohol and metal more better!
Besides germany, switzerland and the USA, our readers also come from japan. There, your kind of music is in great demand; “twilightning” lately toured with helloween very successful through the country of the rising sun. would you also excite to do this?
I've always wanted to visit Japan. And Twilightning is a great band, by the way.

They're still open for few reasons. But things will be sorted out pretty soon.

Please tell me a bit about your lyrics of the new album. How do you generally coin such words?
It's much like composing a song. You come up with an idea that you find interesting and good, and then you start to develop it. I myself like to make words rhyme, here and there. So, it takes some time to finish the them. Occasionally it's not necessary, but mostly I think it makes them more singable and listenable. I'm just speaking for myself here, of course. There are lots of other lyrics in this album that I had nothing to do with. I am very satified with the lyrics and the composition of "Sail Away".
Also musically seen i have to express a big accolade. How long are you personally playing music now?
Thank you. I started it all by playing drums at the age of 13. After this I wanted to learn the guitar, but I was kinda forced to sing 'cause no-one else dared to that. Singing is mentally much demanding that playing, I have to admit. Anyway, I've been into music in various ways for 14 years and counting... And still, there are so many things I have no idea about.
